“My only regret in life is that I did not drink more wine.”

 Ernest Hemingway

I am trying to drink as much wine as I can before I leave this earth!  We never know when that is and that’s why I say- “Drink the Good Stuff First”!

And we recently acquired a cellar full of Lokoya wines and you know my MO we want to drink some of them so I figured we should put on a tasting.  I also know that we have a lot of wine collectors out there that have this wine in their cellar so I thought this would be a good time to host another one of our “Wine Collectors Series” wine tasting events!  The Chateau Lafite Rothschild collectors event that we sent out last week filled up in less than 24 hours!!

Our "Collector Series" tasting event is where we ask you, our wine drinking people, to come up with some wine from your wine collection to add to the party. If you don’t have any Lokoya in your cellar don’t worry we have an incredible collection of Lokoya to choose from and I have included everything that we have in the store from Lokoya on this e-mail offering.  Wwe just had Winemaker Chris Carpenter here earlier this year and tasted wines from all the other wineries in the Jackson Family of wines that he is involved with but we did not have a single bottle of Lokoya that night.  This will more than make up for that and hopefully we can get Chris to join us on a Zoom call during the tasting.

Even though Lokoya has only been around since 1995 it has become one of the premier Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon producers and the high scores and limited supply of these wines make them very hard to find.  We recently acquired a cellar full of Lokoya wines and you know my MO we want to drink some of them so I figured we should put on a tasting.  I also know that we have a lot of customers that collect this wine so if you want to bring one from your cellar you don’t have to buy one here just respond to this e-mail and let me know what vintage of Lokoya you have in your cellar that you want to share with the group and that is your admission to the vertical tasting.  I immediately grabbed the 2006 Lokoya Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Spring Mountain in MAGNUM as my ticket to the event and we will have some extra wines sent by the Jackson Family peeps to share with our group for dinner.

Check out the offering after the list of tasting wines kicking off our new series of “Once In a Lifetime” tastings of Social Distancing where we have the entire Wine Bar to ourselves with only 14 spaces available for this “Collectors Series” wine tasting event.

Lokoya Collectors Tasting at Wine Watch

Thursday, May 28st

7:30pm

Let me explain further- this is a two-part event:

The first part of the evening begins at 7:30pm, this is where we will be tasting through a vertical selection of 10+ vintages of Lokoya. The price of admission is one bottle of Lokoya from your cellar, but here is the catch- we only need 1 bottle of each vintage, so the longer you wait to respond the harder it will be to get a seat as you will have to go further back in time because the youngest vintages will be filled up by the first collectors who respond.

If you do not have a bottle of Lokoya in the cellar that is a different vintage than those below we may be able to help.  We just happen to have one of the largest collections of Lokoya in Florida so I have included a list of all the Lokoya that we have in the store below.

If you would like to attend the vertical tasting just respond to this email with the vintage Lokoya that you would like to trade for your seat.

**There are only 14 spaces available for this event.

Here are the vintages that we have already:

*As I get the vintages from our Collectors, I will add them to the area above.

We will continue to add on to this list as the reservations come in for the event.

The medium to full-bodied palate has a solid structure of firm, chewy tannins supporting the muscular fruit, finishing with great freshness and plenty of latent depth. 2015 Lokoya Winery Mount Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon

(100 Points) Very deep inky purple colored, the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Mount Veeder is a little youthfully reticent at this stage, offering glimpses at freshly crushed black currants, black berries and plums with touches of dried Provence herbs, menthol, cigar boxes and Indian spices. Full-bodied with very firm, very ripe tannins and an incredible core of black fruit, earth and spice layers, it has wonderful freshness and depth, finishing long and multilayered. 618 cases produced. 2014 Lokoya Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Spring Mountain

Price: $412.00    Sale Price: $350.00           Quantity in Stock: 3

(98 Points) The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Spring Mountain has a similar dense bluish/purple color to the rim. It comes across as slightly more elegant, with floral notes dominating the wine’s aromatics. Violets and rose petals followed by blueberry and blackberry fruit as well as some crushed rock in a medium to full-bodied, beautifully pure, suave style characterize this wine, which was made form Spring Mountain vineyards such as Yverdon and Wurtele. Drink it over the next 25 years.  Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

2014 Lokoya Winery Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon

Price: $412.00    Sale Price: $350.00           Quantity in Stock: 3

(99 Points) From the micro-terroir of the W. S. Keyes Vineyard on Howell Mountain, the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain is pushing perfection. Its incredibly opaque color is followed by notes of lead pencil shavings, mulberry, blackberry and dark raspberry fruit, some background oak and minerality, and profound richness in a full-bodied, multi-dimensional style. It is gorgeously ripe, and sexy already, with a lush and voluptuous texture. Drink it over the next 25+ years. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

2014 Lokoya Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Diamond Mountain

Price: $412.00    Sale Price: $350.00           Quantity in Stock: 3

(96 Points) The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Diamond Mountain displays the saturated black purple color from this site. Offering an incredible nose of volcanic ash, charcoal embers, blackberry, cassis and spice, dense, superb, full body, and a multi-layered richness, this wine is just sensational. The silky tannins only add to its up-front appeal. Drink it now and over the next 25-30 years. Wine Advocate

2014 Lokoya Winery Mount Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon

Price: $412.00    Sale Price: $350.00           Quantity in Stock: 3

(99 Points) Usually my favorite in many vintages, the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Mt. Veeder is the most backward of the 2014s and actually seems to require 4-5 years of bottle age. The wine has the telltale signs of Mt. Veeder – blackberry and blueberry fruit infused with considerable floral nuances. This wine has all that, then hits the palate with a cascade of glycerin, fruit extraction, and layers of blackberry and blueberry fruit. It is full-bodied and opulent, but finishes with some structure and ripe tannin. This is a magnificent wine – full-throttle, extremely pure, and incredibly well-balanced. Give it 5-6 years of bottle age and drink it over the following three decades. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

2013 Lokoya Winery Mount Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon

Price: $471.00    Sale Price: $400.00           Quantity in Stock: 12

(100 Points) A wine offering notes of grilled steak, steak tartare, beef blood, blueberries and blackberries galore is the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Mount Veeder. Everything here emerges from the Jackson-owned Veeder Peak Vineyard. Chris Carpenter agrees that this has to be one of the greatest vintages he’s ever had the pleasure to work with – and he has some serious experience under his belt. This 100% Cabernet Sauvignon wine is utterly profound, and while the scoring system ends at 100, if I had to pick a single wine that may have been my favorite of all the tastings I did in Napa, this could have been my pick. Full-bodied, rich, with incredible integration of its component parts of acidity, tannin, alcohol and wood, the wine is lavishly built, has compelling purity, richness and density, and a finish, again, that rivals that of the Howell Mountain, being close to one minute in length. This wine will be certainly approachable young, but last 30-40+ years. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

2013 Lokoya Winery Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon

Price: $442.00    Sale Price: $375.00           Quantity in Stock: 12

(100 Points) One of two perfect wines ended my mini-tasting of the offerings from Lokoya in 2013. The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain from the Keyes Vineyard is an amazing wine. Thick purple in color with a stunning nose of lead pencil shavings, blackcurrants, mulberries and blackberries, the wine has a steely structure, yet enormous concentration, skyscraper-like mouth texture, and builds incrementally to a stunning finish of close to a minute. The purity, the richness, the overall equilibrium are unreal, but then this is Lokoya. Drink it over the next 30+ years.  Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

2013 Lokoya Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Diamond Mountain

Price: $471.00    Sale Price: $400.00           Quantity in Stock: 6

(96 Points) The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Diamond Mountain comes from several parcels, most notably the Wallis vineyard. The wine has an opaque, black-as-a-moonless-night color and an incredible nose of volcanic ash and charcoal interwoven with creme de cassis, blackberry, licorice, grilled meats and almost a beef blood-like component from a grilled steak. The wine has fabulous body and tremendous opulence that nearly hides its significant tannin and structure. This is an enormously endowed, rich wine that probably has 30-40 years of upside potential. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

2013 Lokoya Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Spring Mountain

Price: $442.00    Sale Price: $375.00           Quantity in Stock: 6

(98 Points) The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Spring Mountain, which comes from two sources, the Yverdon and Spring Mountain vineyards, is also 100% Cabernet Sauvignon and also inky bluish/purple in color. The Spring Mountain hallmarks of white flowers, blueberries, black raspberries and blackberry are all present in the extraordinary aromatics of this wine. It is full-bodied, pure and rich, with the oak beautifully concealed and married with the wine’s stunningly rich fruit. This is another tour de force from Chris Carpenter. Look for it to drink well for the next 30-35 years. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

2012 Lokoya Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Spring Mountain

Price: $383.00    Sale Price: $325.00           Quantity in Stock: 6

(98 Points) The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Spring Mountain exhibits blackberry, blueberry, raspberry, ink and floral notes, and softer, lusher tannins than the Diamond Mountain cuvée. Voluptuously textured, full-bodied and opulent, this complex 2012 should continue to drink beautifully for 15+ years. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

2012 Lokoya Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Diamond Mountain

Price: $412.00    Sale Price: $350.00           Quantity in Stock: 6

(96 Points) The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Diamond Mountain tastes like a first-growth Pauillac. Notes of licorice, crème de cassis, graphite, beef blood and forest floor are all present in this full-bodied, extraordinarily pure, majestic wine that coats the palate, but is neither heavy nor harsh. This magnificent, dramatic Cabernet should continue to drink well for 20-25 years.  Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

2012 Lokoya Winery Mount Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon

Price: $412.00    Sale Price: $350.00           Quantity in Stock: 9

(100 Points) The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Mt. Veeder is as compelling a Cabernet Sauvignon as one could ever hope to taste. This 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from a high-elevation site boasts an inky/purple color, and smells of ink, blueberry liqueur, blackberries, black raspberries, mulberries, licorice, charcoal and camphor. With magnificent fruit richness, a layered, full-bodied mouthfeel, and incredible length, this seamlessly constructed 2012 should provide immense pleasure for 25+ years. Kudos to winemaker Chris Carpenter as he is clearly at the top of his game. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

2012 Lokoya Winery Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon

Price: $442.00    Sale Price: $375.00           Quantity in Stock: 12

(99 Points) From a high-elevation vineyard that was replanted in 2006, the 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain reveals an opaque purple color as well as notes of mulberries, graphite, blackberries and a hint of charcoal. This dramatic, ostentatious 2012 is in keeping with the stylistic characteristics of this vintage. Multidimensional, stunningly pure and rich, it is a beauty that flirts with perfection. Drink now-2032. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

2011 Lokoya Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Diamond Mountain

Price: $412.00    Sale Price: $350.00           Quantity in Stock: 3

(92 Points) The inky/purple-colored 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon Diamond Mountain exhibits asphalt, camphor, burning ember and sweet blackberry and cassis notes in a deep, full-bodied, rich, supple style. Even when exceptionally well made (as these four cuvees are), the 2011s are still low in acidity with soft tannins, making them very accessible. The Diamond Mountain Cabernet should drink well for 10-15 years. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

2011 Lokoya Winery Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon

Price: $406.00    Sale Price: $345.00           Quantity in Stock: 3

(96 Points) More crushed stone, mulberry, black currant, lead pencil shavings and wet pebble-like notes emerge from the 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain. This beauty possesses great intensity, full-bodied power, low acidity and sweet tannin. It can be drunk now and over the next 12-15 years.  Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

2011 Lokoya Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Spring Mountain

Price: $353.00    Sale Price: $300.00           Quantity in Stock: 3

(96 points) Even better is the wonderfully perfumed 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon Spring Mountain. Abundant aromas of black raspberries, blueberry liqueur, forest floor and violets are followed by a wine of great intensity, full-bodied richness and a layered, multidimensional personality with sweet tannin as well as low acidity. This beautiful, savory, full-throttle effort should drink well for 15 years. (RP)  (10/2013) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

2011 Lokoya Winery Mount Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon

Price: $353.00    Sale Price: $300.00           Quantity in Stock: 3

(98 Points) Flirting with perfection, which is almost unheard of in this vintage, is the 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon Mt. Veeder. Along with Betty O-Shaughnessey, Lokoya appears to have produced one of the finest Cabernet Sauvignons made from this underrated and diverse terroir. Seamlessly constructed, this opaque purple-colored 2011 offers up aromas of pen ink, acacia flowers, forest floor, blueberries, blackberries and cassis intermixed with hints of espresso, chocolate and subtle earthy notes. Wonderfully ripe and voluptuously textured, this beautiful, full-bodied wine should continue to drink well for another 15-20 years. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

2010 Lokoya Winery Mount Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon

Price: $353.00    Sale Price: $300.00           Quantity in Stock: 3

Lokoya is a collection of four distinct Cabernet Sauvignons from four of Napa Valley's most celebrated mountain appellations. These single-vineyard wines are 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, fermented with native yeast, and bottled unfined and unfiltered—resulting in the purest expression of place. They are powerful wines that reflect the intense individuality of each mountain and this 2010 Mount Veeder is no exception.

2010 Lokoya Winery Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon

Price: $325.00    Sale Price: $275.00           Quantity in Stock: 3

(94 Points) The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain, from Keyes Vineyard, is one of the most powerful wines in the Lokoya lineup. Firm tannins support a core of explosive dark blue and black fruit, grilled herbs, menthol and licorice, all of which come to life in a decidedly powerful, super-intense expression of Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon. There is no shortage of personality here. Full-bodied and vibrant, the take-no-holds 2010 is going to require patience, but it is beautiful, even today. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2030. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

2009 Lokoya Winery Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon

Price: $377.00    Sale Price: $320.00           Quantity in Stock: 1

(93 Points) Deep garnet in color, the 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain offers up pronounced notes of baked cherries, blackberry preserves and warm cassis with touches of espresso, mincemeat pie and tree bark plus a waft of dried herbs. Full-bodied, the palate is laden with Indian spices, fragrant herbs and warm black fruits with a chewy frame and earthy kick to the finish. 195 cases were made. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

2009 Lokoya Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Spring Mountain

List Price: $325.00            Sale Price: $275.00           Quantity in Stock: 1

(92 Points) The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Spring Mountain is deep garnet colored with a hint of brick. It features expressive mocha, leather and spice box notes with a core of crème de cassis, prunes and dried mulberries and a waft of iron ore. Full-bodied and packed with mint and spices, it has a firm, chewy texture and long, earthy finish. It is looking relatively mature, but there is no huge rush to drink soon. 506 cases were made. A Bit About Lokoya Winery

Lokoya logo

Established in 1995, Lokoya is a collection of four distinct Cabernet Sauvignons from four of Napa Valley’s most celebrated mountain appellations. These limited-production, single-vineyard wines are 100 percent Cabernet Sauvignon.

Cabernet Sauvignon as lens, site as conveyor—The grape variety and winemaking for the four wines remain constant, allowing the vineyard sites to shine with the climate, soils, sunlight and drainage all fully expressed in the glass.

Given the lofty provenance of the sites, the vineyards demand constant engagement—leaving no room for error. The deep understanding of the vineyard trajectory in each vintage comes from the long collaboration between Winemaker Chris Carpenter and Vineyard Manager Mariano Navarro.

At elevations ranging from 1,100 to 2,500 feet, these Napa mountain sites are uncommon in the world of Cabernet Sauvignon—outside of California, the world’s great Cabernets reside primarily on benches and foothills.

Lokoya’s rarified mountain Cabernet bottlings express something altogether different in the king of red grapes; there’s a tension to the wines, an immense structural expression balanced by layer upon layer of aromatic intensity and textural hedonism. Highly sought after by collectors, the wines of Lokoya can be enjoyed for decades to come.

At the eastern side of Napa Valley’s Vaca Range, Howell Mountain peaks at 2,500 feet. Our estate vineyard sits on the high mountain plateau at 1,900 feet, surrounded by towering redwoods and pines. The vineyard’s soils of sandstone rocks, volcanic ash, red clay, and conifer biomatter, provide density and texture to the wine along with dark fruit flavors, sweet herbs, and minerality.

This appellation lies above the town of St. Helena on the eastern slopes of the Mayacamas Mountains, which separate Napa Valley from Sonoma Valley and the Santa Rosa Plain. The vineyard is located at 1,600 feet and has sedimentary soils. The wine it produces opens with a signature floral perfume that leads to red and black fruit flavors. Satiny tannins yield on the palate, yet will fully reward cellaring.

Diamond Mountain overlooks the town of Calistoga in the northern reaches of Napa Valley and is part of the Mayacamas Mountains which frame the western edge of the valley. At elevations ranging from 1,000 to 1,800 feet, the vineyard soils are composed of fine volcanic dust and loam, providing rich flavors of dark cherry and bittersweet chocolate with relatively soft tannins and a layered mouthfeel.

Bathed in sunlight on the western ridges of the Mayacamas Mountains and at the northern end of the Mount Veeder appellation, this vineyard sits at 1,800 feet and struggles in rugged volcanic terrain. Shallow soils low in minerals and nutrients challenge the vitality of the vines and produce small berries with intensely concentrated fruit. The wine is full-bodied and structured, with layers of blue and black fruit and wet stone minerality. It’s a superb candidate for cellaring.
