It's a naive domestic Burgundy without any breeding, but I think you'll be amused by its presumption.  James Thurber 1894 - 1961  Caption for cartoon in The New Yorker

I have been salivating about this event for the last month and at just under a week away I am really starting to get excited.  Maison/Domaine Leroy is one of the most sought after collectibles in the world of fine wine.  We just sent out an offering on these wines and before they all go out the door I thought it would be smart to arrange a tasting with some of our "Wine Drinking People".

This evening we are going to focus on the 2007 vintage which is 10 years old now and just starting to drink at or near its peak for those of you wine drinkers that like an abundance of fruit as that is the first thing that starts to fade in a wine.  These 2007's are a lighter more charming vintage from Burgundy and although they are not considered to be a classic long aging vintage that is ok for those of you that don't want to buy green bananas this is one of the best vintages to drink right now from this decade.  We also will feature one 30+ year old wine from this producer and the last bottle of 2002 Clos Vougeot that I have, we just had this wine at our Holiday party a month ago and it was spectacular!

"In her wines, Lalou seeks a magnified delineation of flavors. Each wine offers a kaleidoscope of sensation, each of which is distinct from the other with no blurring or muddiness. Because of this, it is virtually impossible to mistake one vineyard for another in a Domaine Leroy wine. Lalou seeks a degree of purity, allied to extraordinary concentration, that is almost unmatched by any other producer." - Matt Kramer, LA TimesÂ

"Her wines are exactly what they should be as expressions of the terroirs from which they come." - Robert Finigan

"I have said it so many times that it may seem redundant, but " let me repeat it- Lalou Bize-Leroy stands alone at the top of Burgundy's quality hierarchy. Because she is a perfectionist, and because she has the courage to produce wines from low yield and bottle them naturally, without fining or filtration." - Robert Parker

This tasting will be a spectacular display of mature burgundies from one of the best of the best. We will be sampling a total of 9 wines from Leroy and one ringer from DRC to show a comparison of the paired to a five course tasting menu, the fee for this tasting is $450 + tax, there are only 14 seats available for reservations call 954-523-9463 or e-mail andy@winewatch.com.

The Wine Watch Wine Bar will be open for service with a limited menu on every night that we have an event like this.  We will feature items from the menu we are serving for the event and wines by the glass from the producer that we are featuring that night.  You can pre-order the food for that evening on our web page along with your wine for that evening in the new Wine Bar Selections section of our web page on the home page:  www.winewatch.com/wine-bar-selections/ Check this section of the site out on a night like next Thursday when we are drinking all the Leroy wine to see what we are serving in the Wine Bar.

1985 Maison Leroy Nuits St. Georges La Richemone

My tasting notes from our tasting in 2016:  A beautiful bouquet with lots of pretty floral notes and exotic spices this wine has a good amount of raspberry fruit, minty notes, still has a firm hand of acidity and a bit of that savage nature Nuits St. Georges.  Finish 40+       Excellent +

2007 Domaine Leroy Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Les Narbantons
Price: $595.00    Your Price: $523.60
Quantity in Stock: 24

Les Narbantons is a Premier Cru climat in the southern part of the Savigny-les-Beaune appellation in Burgundy. Situated on the slopes above the Rhoin river valley, the vineyard is planted predominantly to Pinot Noir, which performs well in the terroir here. Les Narbantons Premier Cru wines are concentrated, with a fine but definite tannin structure and earthy fruit flavors.

The vineyard is one of the largest in the Savigny-les-Beaune appellation, covering nearly 25 acres (10ha) of land on the edge of the Mont Battois hill. Les Narbantons is unusual in that it has a northeasterly aspect and receives less exposure to sunlight than other vineyards along the Cote d'Or, which face predominantly southeast. Les Narbanton's neighboring climats, Les Jarrons and Les Rouvrettes, have a similar aspect.

2007 Domaine Leroy Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Boudots
Price: $650.00    Your Price: $572.00
Quantity in Stock: 20

The  «Les  Boudots»  vineyards  is  bordering  the  Premier  Cru  vineyards  of  Vosne Romanée, at the northern edge of the Nuits Saint Georges appellation.

2007 Leroy Vosne Romanne Les Beaux Monts Premier Cru
Price: $795.00    Your Price: $699.60
Quantity in Stock: 3

Vosne-Romanée, famous the world over for its Grand Crus, also produces some Premier Crus capable of competing with the best. The iron-based soil just north of Nuits Saint-Georges is absolutely ideal for the growing of Pinot Noir.

2007 Domaine Leroy Nuits St. Georges Aux Allots
Price: $425.00    Your Price: $374.00
Quantity in Stock: 23

Aux Allots covers 7.96ha of vineyards. There is a rich clay soil here with plenty of water from small springs – probably the name derives from a reference to water (à l’eau ?) – providing ample-bodied red Pinot Noir Nuits St Georges wines. This type of soil does better in drier years when it retains water, but would suffer in a wetter vintage.

2007 Leroy Nuits St Georges Aux Lavieres Premier Cru
 Price: $450.00    Your Price: $396.00
Quantity in Stock: 22

(90 points)  The 2005 Nuits-St.-Georges Les Lavieres smells of sandalwood, cocoa powder, and lightly-cooked black cherry. Strikingly creamy, polished and plush on the palate, with vividly concentrated cherry fruit and meat juices, it finishes sweet and rich but with strong underlying tannins and stony, alkaline mineral notes. (6/2007) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

2007 Domaine Leroy Latricieres Chambertin Grand Cru
Price: $2150.00    Your Price: $1892.00
Quantity in Stock: 6

Latricières-Chambertin is one of the eight grand cru vineyards in Gevrey-Chambertin, one of Burgundy's most famous villages. It lies on the Côte d'Or, just south of the famous Chambertin vineyard and above Mazoyères-Chambertin, and is planted exclusively to Pinot Noir. Latricières-Chambertin wines tend to be slightly more rustic than Gevrey-Chambertin's other grand cru vineyards.

2007 Leroy Romanee St Vivant Grand Cru
Price: $1975.00    Your Price: $1738.00
Quantity in Stock: 3

(95 Points) Dark berries and dark, mossy, humus-rich forest floor, saline, crustacean-reduction, and oyster flesh mineral-animal savor, sweetly ripe raspberry, all follow from the nose across a sumptuously rich palate, and into a prodigious, saliva-inducing finish. A trace of warmth (rare in the present collection) doesn't detract noticeably from what is an extraordinary performance. Follow it over the next 20 years.

My tasting notes from earlier this year:  An exotic nose that has a toasted caramel like note to it along with a host of exotic spices, raspberry liqueur and a lovely perfumed character to the finish, bright fruit and velvet like tannins, very exotic and this vintage is drinking beautifully right now, a nice savory quality to the finish and incredible length would lead me to believe you can keep this wine for another decade or more in the cellar but it is hard to resist right now!  Finish 50+  Most Excellent

2002 Leroy Clos De Vougeot Grand Cru
(My last bottle!)

(96 points) Madame Leroy fashions her Clos Vougeot from three parcels located at the top, in the middle, and at the bottom of this renowned grand cru. Super-ripe, waxy blackberries are intermingled with spices in its expressive nose. This extremely expansive, generous wine is fresh, pure, and boasts superb tannin. It has exceptional depth, concentration, and complexity. Copious quantities of red and black fruits are intermingled with Asian spices in its nuanced flavor profile. (PR) (6/2004)  Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Price: $995.00    Your Price: $875.60
Quantity in Stock: 2

(94 Points)  Of the five outstanding offerings from the village of Nuits St.-Georges, the most exotic and flashy is the Nuits St.-Georges-Aux Boudots. The huge nose of roasted meats, pure black-raspberries, and herbs soars from the glass. Full-bodied, with layer upon layer of rich, unctuous Pinot fruit, this super-concentrated, voluptuously textured wine is so rich that the formidable tannin levels are nearly concealed. The finish goes on and on. +

2005 Domaine Leroy Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Les Narbantons
Price: $995.00    Your Price: $875.60
Quantity in Stock: 9

(92 Points) Insiders have long known that one of the treasures of the Leroy portfolio is the Savigny Les Beaune-Les Narbantons. Consistently the finest wine made in that appellation, it achieves grand cru quality because of its extraordinary richness and multidimensional character. The 1990 is awesome. The forceful bouquet, which is just beginning to form, soars from the glass, offering up aromas of minerals, toasty oak, and gobs of black fruit. In the mouth, there is magnificent richness, medium to full-body, and a layered, multi-dimensional, chewy texture that goes on and on. The moderate tannins are nearly obscured by the wine's sweet concentration of fruit.  Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate

2005 Domaine Leroy Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts
Price: $1195.00    Your Price: $1051.60
Quantity in Stock: 7

(93-96 Points) Tasting note: A step up in elegance and refinement with strikingly pure and airy ripe black fruit aromas redolent of the classic Asian spices that certainly can be found on the detailed, balanced and minerally flavors that are more refined and less robust than the Brulées yet the focus, harmony and transparency are truly stunning. This is reference standard quality and it's entirely possible that this will be the best Leroy Beaux Monts ever made. This is definitely one of those 'wow' wines. Highly recommended. BH Tasted: Jan 01, 2007 Score: 93-96 Drink: 2017+ Comments: Don't miss! Outstanding, Issue #25
