Burgundy makes you think of silly things, Bordeaux makes you talk of them and Champagne makes you do them. -- Jean-Anthelme Brillat-Savarin
The Wine Bar will be closed all week this week as I am on vacation but the Wine Watch is still open for retail sales. We will be closed July 4th to celebrate Independence day but we will be open seven days a week for our Wine Drinking People all year and only close the retail store on major holidays.
I will just be fresh back from vacation for this one and I'm ready to drink some GREAT burgundy. This tasting will feature two of my favorite Grand Crus hailing from the village of Chambolle Musigny; Bones Mares and Musigny from quite possibly the greatest producer of these to Grand Crus.
I have included all the Chambolle Musigny, Musigny and Bonnes Mares that we have in the store on this offering. The fee for the tasting and dinner is $495+ tax, for reservations call 954-523-9463 or e-mail andy@winewatch.com

We threw this bottle in to see how it was affected but the heat- you our wine drinking people will be the judge this evening to see how this wine was affected if at all by this mishap. Hey after all were doing scientific work here at the Wine Watch

Today’s offering features one of the ultimate "Blue Chips" collectibles from Burgundy and as Charles Dickens puts it Domaine Georges Comte de Vogue is; "As old as the hills and infinitely more respectable". The Musigny family, who gave their name to the famous vineyard in the fourteenth century before vanishing into obscurity, lived in a small hamlet later to become known as Chambolle, where around 1450 Jean Moisson constructed a chapel there. The de Vogue did not appear until 1766 when Catherine Bouhier married Cerice Francis Melchior de Vogue.
Since then, five generations of de Vogues have taken charge of the Domaine, each adding, by acquisition or exchange, something to the estate. In recent years is was Comte Georges de Vogue whose name was inextricably linked with the Domaine. The Comte was by all recollections a lively, old-fashioned aristocratic of great charm, he traveled back and forth from his home in Paris to Chambolle to oversee production and discuss strategy with his closely knit team lead by the venerable Alain Roumier. Comte Georges passed away in 1986, the same year his confidant and winemaking partner retired after 30 years of service.
There was a short period of uncertainty about the estate as George’s wife took over the estate, but left the day-to-day management to her daughter, Elizabeth de Ladoucette. There was much to be done since the late 1970s there had been disquiet in expert circles about the Domaine’s wines which were widely felt to be less concentrated and consistent than before, even years like 1978 seemed to have few of the qualities of such a legendary vintages as 1945, 1947, 1959, 1969 and 1972. It was baffling to many critics as the Domaine itself kept almost no stocks of older vintage wine for comparative tasting, but it may be notes that Musigny, the core of the estates production, is often misjudged, being a wine of naturally light color, predominantly characterized by finesse and elegance.
The new crew that began in 1985/86 consisting of oenologist Francios Millet and Chef de Culture Gerard Gaudeau were complimented by the amiable and urbane Jean-Luc Pepin, hired as commercial attaché in 1989. With this qualified group now in charge at Comte Georges de Vogue the 1990s and beyond should be on par with the excellence this winery has become known for. If you look for older vintages of these wines not only are they difficult to locate but the price is 4-5 times the release price.
