"Knowledge enormous makes a God of me. Names, deeds, gray legends, dire events, rebellions, Majesties, sovran voices, agonies, Creations and destroyings, all at once Pour into the wide hollows of my brain, And deify me, as if some blithe wine Or bright elixir peerless I had drunk, And so become immortal."
~ John Keats

The Wine Bar reopens next Thursday night July 12th with and our guest is one of my favorite wineries from the Piedmont Malvira.

The Piedmont is one of my favorite wine regions on earth and it is because of the people as much as the wines.  If I had to pick a favorite grape varietal there is no hesitation that Nebbiolo is at the top of my favorite varietal list.  This wine has the subtle earthy nuance and floral perfume of Pinot Noir (one my other favorite varietals) and the power and age ability of Cabernet Sauvignon (another one of my favorites).  The best of both worlds in one varietal, so the perfect grape in my eyes is Nebbiolo and the only place that turns this varietal into world class wine is Italy and more specifically the Piedmont.

Barbera is also one of my favorite varietals and its diversity with food is enhanced by its pronounced acidity and the nuance from the earth, truffles, dark berry fruit and light tannic structure make it a crowd pleaser from the day it is released.  Whereas Nebbiolo needs to be cellared for 10+ years in a great vintage most Barbera can be enjoyed while you are waiting for your Barolos and Barbarescos to mellow out in your cellar.

Even though Malvira winery produces both of these varietals the wine they are most famous for is their Arneis white wines.  They are masters of Arneis and to prove this we will start this tasting with a vertical selection of their Arneis back to the 2012 vintage.  That may not seem like a long way back but this is their entry level white and the price tag is under $15 a bottle on this offering for the two older vintage Arneis.  Even their single vineyard wines are some of the most reasonably prices in all of the Piedmont we had a 10 year old single vineyard Barbera in the store for only $25!!  If I can find the last bottle of this wine I will add it to the list for this event.

Join us as we experience all of the new releases from Malvira winery along with a few older vintage wines with the brand ambassador for this winery Matt Fleming.  Toni Lampasone will be making a special meal to accompany the tasting wines and the fee for this tasting with dinner is only $65+ tax, for reservations call 954-523-9463 or e-mail andy@winewatch.com.

Malvira Roero Arneis 2014
Price: $15.00       Sale $13.20
Quantity in Stock: 2

We have a vertical of the entry level Arneis to show that this wine is far from entry level as it can age for 5-10 years in the cellar.  They have a library of all the white wines produced at Malvira at the winery and we had a few  older vintages here so we have to give the white wines their due tonight with the best value in the line-up showing its ability to age.

Stays a little time in old French oak, 18-24 months with 3-5weeks of maceration, this wine is made from Trinita and Mombeltramo Vineyards, lots of sandy soils because all of this area was under water, very elegant wines, pretty nose of red cherry and red licorice spice with rose petal floral aromas. Malvira Birbet Brachetto Roero NV image

Malvira Brachetto Birbet NV
Price: $23.50       Sale $20.68

Birbet is the name for the production of Brachetto Longo a very different grape than the Brachetto found elsewhere in the Piedmont similar in aromas to Moscato. Very pretty bouquet of red cherry and peach like fruit on the nose almost like a sangria with pretty floral notes and some of that Piedmont terroir and spice showing here as well. only 5% Alcohol and 12% residual sugar making this wine fairly sweet on the tongue but finishes with nice balance and the effervescence and the acidity here make things fresh and dry on the finish. Finish 35 Excellent

Damonte brothers - Azienda Agricola Malvirà

 A bit about Malvira winery:

Malvirà was established in the 1950s by Giuseppe Damonte, at a time when the Roero's potential was yet unrealized. Giuseppe had a great passion for farming and wine, a passion that he passed on to his two sons, Roberto and Massimo. In 1974, Roberto and Massimo took the reigns and began slowly turning the family's bulk wine business into an Estate focusing on quality wine production.
Today, Malvirà's wines are produced from Estate fruit, organically farmed across 104 acres and 6 vineyards. Over the years, they have been one of the most ardent proponents of the Arneis grape. 42 of their 104 acres are devoted to the propagation of Arneis. It is the wine for which Malvirà is renowned. In 2007, the Damontes purchased the Renesio vineyard, which they leased since 1983. Renesio is the Cru from which the Arneis grape was identified in 1478. In fact, it is unknown which came first, the name of the vineyard, or the name of the grape!
Arneis needs careful farming. According to Massimo Damonte, who oversees viticulture at his Estate, the secret to great Arneis lies in old vines. Malvirà's average vine age for Arneis is 40‐50 years old. Vine age naturally helps to inhibit yields, allowing the plant to channel more of its energy in producing lesser quantities of higher quality fruit. The dimensions of flavors vary based on the type of soil and the mesoclimate of the vineyard. O In addition to Arneis, Malvirà produces Favorita, Roero (100% Nebbiolo), Barbera, and Birbet.
VINEYARDS Malvirà's Estate spans 104 acres and 6 primary vineyards including Trinità, Renesio, Saglietto, San Michele, San Guglielmo, and Mombeltramo. All vineyards are farmed organically. The Roero was at one time completely immersed by the sea. Its many soil types are distinguished by this geological history. Generally speaking there is more oceanic sedimentary and sandy soil found in the Roero, as compared to the neighboring parts of the Langhe (Barolo and Barbaresco). It is not uncommon to find fossilized shells in vineyards. The Trinità vineyard is sedimentary in nature with a high portion of sand. The upper part of the south‐facing slope is planted to Nebbiolo, where the grape can ripen to its fullest potential. The lower part of the hill is planted to Arneis. The Renesio vineyard is rich in calcareous marl and planted with Arneis and Nebbiolo. Saglietto is contiguous to Renesio and shares similar soils, though with a bit more clay resulting in a denser wine. It is planted exclusively to white grapes, including Arneis and Favorita. San Michele has calcareous clay soils and is planted with Barbera. San Guglielmo, the family's most historic vineyard, borders Trinità and shares its sedimentary sandy soils and affinity for red grapes, including Nebbiolo and Barbera.
Roberto Damonte: “I remember my first Arneis. I was 15, studying to be a winemaker, and at the time my family only made red wines. I wanted to try making Arneis, but we didn’t have any space in the cellar, so I had to put it in large jugs in our garage where at least it was cold in order to stop the malolactic fermentation. I made 500 bottles and I remember my mother asking me, what she was supposed to do with all of this Arneis? She could not just make roasted rabbit all year and use it for the sauce. So I brought it to my uncle to try to sell a couple bottles to some clients of his. The next week, he came back to me and asked me if I had more. The restaurant down the street liked it so much that they bought the whole lot. For my first Arneis experiment, it went very well.”
