Bordeaux first Growth Offering- The Big Eleven on SALE!!

The “big eight” or the “first growths” of Bordeaux which can now be called the “big eleven” today if you include Chateau Petrus (Pomerol was never classified) along with Chateau Pavie and Chateau Angelus, the two wines from Saint Emilion that were elevated to first growth or Grand Cru Classe A status in 2012.    The Bordeaux classification of 1855 included only Chateau from the left bank and only four Chateau were considered first growths at that time: Chateau Lafite Rothschild, Chateau Latour, Chateau Margaux and Chateau Haut Brion.  Although there were technically no first growths in Barsac or Sauternes Chateau D’yquem was given its own classification of Premier Cru Superieur.  In 1973 Chateau Mouton Rothschild was added to this list and nothing else has changed since that time on the left bank of Bordeaux.

In the 1950’s the right bank of Bordeaux was classified and there were two wines considered to have “first growth status and those were Chateau Cheval Blanc and Chateau Ausone.  Although Pomerol was never officially classified most would include Chateau Petrus among this group of elite wines considered the finest in all of Bordeaux.

Although the “big eight” was not an official list it was almost universally agreed upon that these were Bordeaux’s top wines as these wines have a world-wide demand and as a result of that demand they are also some of the most expensive wines on the planet.  Today, we have included the two new wines from Saint Emilion Chateau Angelus and Chateau Pavie which have been elevated to first growth or Premier Grand Cru Classe A status since the 2012 vintage.   Saint Emilion is the only appellation where a chateau can apply to the AC board and make an appeal for their status to be elevated based on their last ten vintages quality.

Wine Watch has an incredible collection of these wines in the store at the moment and many of the wines below were procured from an underground cellar where they were purchased on release.  We recently acquired this collection and most of these wines have the term (OWC) (original wooden case) after the item description.  Normally (OWC) wines are only offered by the case but we are offering everything here by the bottle.  The (OWC) just indicated that the provenance of these wines is the best you can get, only one owner before coming to Wine Watch.

Provenance is everything with vintage Bordeaux and this lot of 1973, 1976 and 1995 Les Forts de Latour was purchased on release and kept in an underground cellar until we picked it up a year ago.  Any wine on this offering with (OWC) next to the item description is also from that same cellar and although we will sell the entire case the price is per bottle on these items.
