When I put my nose in a glass, it's like tunnel vision. I move into another world, where everything around me is just gone, and every bit of mental energy is focused on that wine.  Robert M. Parker, Jr.

Robert Parker Jr. is the most influential wine writer of our lifetime, and he has made a lot of people famous in placed like Bordeaux and Napa Valley.  I always say you can’t drink points but you’re going to pay a lot for the last two on the 100 Point scale.  The wines that his publication the Wine Advocate rates 99 and 100 points inevitably become some of the most expensive on earth especially if they come from Napa Valley.

One sure way to score very highly with the Wine Advocate is the hire a top winemaker like Philippe Melka.  He has made more 100-point wines that almost anyone in the history of California wine.  So when I get a chance to offer a wine made by Philippe at over 50% off the regular price, no matter if it is red or white I jump at the chance to give our “Wine Drinking People” a top level wine at ½ the regular price, especially if they are vintage.

Older California chardonnay is not a hot ticket but to me the 2017 vintage is drinking at it’s peak today and the 2019 also showing nicely as 5-7 years is a good amount of cellaring for a top level California Chardonnay.  We just tasted these wines over the last 5 days and on day 5 open they are still drinking beautifully.  So in addition to these wines from Seavey I am offering all Chardonnay in the store that are 2017 vintage or older at 20% off their regular price.

Vintage Seavey Chardonnay at over 50% Off!!

A bit about Seavey Winery:

Seavey Vineyard

In the 1870s – when Conn Valley Road was little more than a wagon trail – the land which we now farm was planted with grapes to make a “Claret of high repute.” This wine was judged by the St. Helena Star to be “as fine as one might find anywhere.” Commonly known as the Franco-Swiss Farming Company, this was the pioneering vineyard and winemaking operation of Conn Valley. After roughly thirty years of producing great wines, the company dissolved due to the impact of a phylloxera infestation and Prohibition. For more than a half century, cattle roamed the land and grain was farmed but no more grapes were cultivated until Bill and Mary Seavey acquired the land in 1979.

Bill and Mary set out to revive the original vineyard, planting the south-facing hillsides of Conn Valley near Lake Hennessey. By 1990, we had remodeled an 1881 stone dairy barn into a small winery and began producing small quantities of Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. Small blocks of Merlot and Petit Verdot were also added along with a second winery building which includes an underground wine cave.

Production from the estate’s 40 planted acres is approximately 3,000 cases annually. This small-scale production allows us to maintain consistently high standards in both the vineyard and the winery. We’ve never bought a grape and we farm our land with our in-house crew. Our steep, rocky hillsides produce small, thick-skinned berries with outstanding tannins which must be handled very gently. As a result, our winemaking approach is gentle and patient. Stewarded by Jim Duane, our winemaker, and also Philippe Melka, our consulting winemaker, our goal is to create masterful, soulful wines that exude a sense of place and age gracefully.

All Seavey wines are wonderfully flavorful and concentrated. Our flagship Cabernet Sauvignon is crafted for classic Bordeaux-style richness, finesse and balance for cellar aging. Our Caravina Cabernet is meant for earlier drinking and offers supple tannins and youthful intense flavors. We also produce small lots of Merlot and Chardonnay. We look forward to introducing you to our rare and extensive wine library dating back to 1990 and to our wine clubs that provide access to these wines. Bill and Mary’s commitment to creating this library for future enjoyment was unshakeable, and reflected their conviction that our wines would only improve with time.  Like their consulting winemaker that has been with them since day one Philippe Melka.

A native of Bordeaux, Philippe Melka grew up intrigued by the intricacies of the land around him. Arriving in Napa Valley to study wine in 1991, the region’s soil proved to be a revelation for him. For the past 15 years, Melka has served as a winemaking consultant for some of Napa’s most highly regarded properties, including Vineyard 29, Hundred Acre, Dana Estates, Gemstone Vineyard and Lail Vineyards. Melka is recognized as one of the wine industry’s leading winemakers: Robert Parker named him one of the world’s nine most important winemakers, while Food & Wine declared him “winemaker of the year” in 2005.

“Seavey is one of the great, unheralded, under-the-radar terroirs in all of Napa Valley…Bill and Mary were visionaries with regard to what could be achieved on these dry-farmed hillside vineyards tucked away in Conn Valley, east of the Meadowood Resort.”— Robert Parker, Jr.

Jim Duane has led Seavey’s winemaking since 2011 after stints at Robert Mondavi Winery and Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars where he became inspired to focus on Bordeaux varietals. Jim combines rich knowledge of winemaking from around the world with deep technical understanding of vineyards and wine, receiving his Master’s Degree in Viticulture and Enology from UC Davis. About Seavey, Jim says: “I delight in the rugged terraces and steep vineyards here, which provide constant opportunities to refine our cultivation methods, And in our small team’s relentless pursuit of crafting unmistakable, world-class wines.” Jim is also passionate about wine education and produces an informative and entertaining Inside Winemaking Podcast.

2017 AUGUST BRIGGS CHARDONNAY LEVERONI VINEYARD CARNEROS

Price: $30.00                   Your Price: $24.00              Quantity in Stock: 27

This wine comes from the great Leveroni vineyard located on the Sonoma County side of Carneros, just south of the town of Sonoma. This marks the 22nd year from which we have made wine from this acclaimed vineyard. The 2017 was characterized by being early; early bud break, early flowering, early veraison and early harvest. Thankfully we harvested the grapes before the damaging fires of 2017.

This wine has a light golden color and effuses aromas of poached pear, lemon zest, vanilla bean and pineapple. Medium-bodied, it completely coats the palate with satiny textured tropical and fresh citrus fruits, featuring hints of mineral accents and a long, uplifting finish. Perfect for pairing with any dish that plays off fruit flavors, like mahi mahi with pineapple-jalapeno salsa. Yum!

The grapes for this wine were picked at 24.8 brix then whole-cluster pressed, cold settled, inoculated with yeast, and racked to barrels for fermentation. Barrels used were 100% French, with 25% being new and 75% being a mix of 2 year old barrels from the previous vintage. After completion of fermentation the wine was inoculated with a malo-lactic culture, stirred weekly, and sur-lees aged 8 months. 206 cases produced.

2017 JOSEPH SWAN CHARDONNAY RITCHIE VINEYARD RUSSIAN RIVER

Price: $48.00                   Your Price: $38.40              Quantity in Stock: 9

Located in the heart of the Russian River Valley, this wine comes from one of the oldest blocks of the vineyard. The vineyard is highly coveted with numerous winemakers sourcing from here. Everyone gets their own dedicated row (or half as the case may be). However, not all Ritchie Vineyard wines are created equal. Throw in personal preferences with at least one winery picking 2 weeks ahead of everyone else and a couple wineries on the other end of the spectrum. Leads to some very diverse wines. We fall somewhere in the middle.

This wine is produced from a vineyard owned by Tim and Angela Coddington whose grapes have contributed to the blend of Kumeu River Estate Chardonnay since 1998. It is a vineyard that produces very rich and unctuous Chardonnay that we have long believed could make an excellent single vineyard wine. In 2006 we decided to give Coddington single vineyard status to reflect this vineyard’s unique character. Usually the most flamboyant wine when young, the 2015 Coddington is rich, opulent and generous. Silky and concentrated, the character of the 2015 vintage really comes through on the palate. Refreshing acidity with a long and intense finish. -wilsondaniels.com
