Thoughts on the matter: “I like all paintings. I always look at the paintings, good or bad, in barbershops, furniture stores, provincial hotels. I’m like a drinker who needs wine. As long as it is wine, it doesn’t matter which wine.”

Pablo Picasso - Painter

I will not take just any wine and if I have a choice on my last supper one of the wines on the table that evening will be Nebbiolo from the Piedmont.  So, I was happy to hear that one of my favorite personalities from one of my favorite wineries in the Piedmont will be in town this month.  We have sent a lot of our “Wine Drinking People” to visit La Spinetta winery over the years and we have hosted dozens of events with our good friend Giorgio Rivetti so this one should sell out quickly.

Join us as we welcome Giorgio back to south Florida for an evening of exceptional wine and a special four course dinner paired to the wines by chef Toni Lampasone.  The fee for this tasting which includes dinner is $275 + tax, for reservations call 954-523-9463 or e-mail andy@winewatch.com.

A bit about La Spinetta Winery:

http://www.la-spinetta.com/images/casanova6.png

Located a tad north of Barbaresco towards Asti is the "modest" facility of the Rivetti family.   When we first became acquainted with Giorgio Rivetti, he was regarded as an up-and-coming producer of fizzy Moscato d'Asti wines.  Ask anyone in the Langhe who's making top Moscato wines and they'd always have Rivetti on their short list of producers.   Move on to the 1990s and then things changed.  Oh, Rivetti still makes some of Piemonte's best fizzy Moscato wines (Biancospino, Bricco Quaglia, Bric Lapasot, San Rumu and Muscatel Vej).  If you see them while traveling around Italy, don't hesitate to order these after dinner as they are really "fun" wines.

La Spinetta makes 3 single vineyard Barbarescos; Gallina, Valeirano, and Starderi, all are very unique despite being from vineyards not very far from each other.  All three are 100% Nebbiolo as dictated by DOCG laws and all spend a minimum of 18 months in oak and one year in bottle.  The Gallina and Starderi are single crus in Neive and Valeirano is a single cru from Treiso.  The Gallina (green label) tends to be the softest and most elegant of the three.  The Valeirano (blue label) is more tannic and aggressive with a very impressive structure.  In blind tastings, the Valeirano is often thought to be a Barolo from Serralunga d’Alba.  The Starderi (pink label) is tannic with unimaginable complexity and layers upon layers of fruit.  The 2010 vintage in the Piedmont is the latest in a string of  outstanding vintages, each of them different but nonetheless producing very high quality wine.  The 2010's have a bit more structure and depth than the highly touted 2009’s which tend to be very forward and approachable wines.

The 2000 vintage was the first release of La Spinetta’s Barolo from the Campe vineyard in Grinzane Cavour.  Even though Grinzane Cavour offers one of the greatest terroirs of the Barolo region, given its exposure to the south and its microclimate, it has never been capable of producing world class Barolos.  Giorgio feels certain that this is because no producer has been able to interpret this land as it should be interpreted.  He is confident that he will be able to make Barolo from the Campe vineyard that will rightly pay tribute to its incredible terrior.  He compares it to what Elio Altare faced with his Arborina vineyard, a previously unknown area of production for Barolo that today thanks to Altare is one of the greatest crus of Barolo.  Giorgio is very enthusiastic about meeting this challenge and by the looks of it; he may very well have done so.  I have had an opportunity to taste every one of these Barolos and have to say that from the very frist one that rated (98 Points) in the Wine Spectator they have all been Most Excellent to KILLER.  This is one of the best Barolo’s that I have ever tasted and is quite drinkable even at this young age, the 2010 could be the best release of this wine to date!!  The Campe Barolo has quickly become one of the most sought after wines made in Barolo.  This wine is KILLER!

Pin is one of the first blends of its type from the Piedmont, Nebbiolo, Barbera and Cabernet Sauvignon make up the blend with Cabernet Sauvignon making up less and less of the total, the new releases of this have no Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend at all.  Giorgio took this foreign varietal out of this wine completely as he has pointed out, the Piedmont is better suited to its native varietals.  Just a few short years ago producers in the Piedmont were planting Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and other popular varietals because it was fashionable at that time.  Today it's fashionable to make wines from varietals that are indigenous to the area and there is nothing like Nebbiolo from the Peidmont found anywhere on the planet, so why plant Cabernet Sauvignon which is suitable to grow in many areas all over the world.  This wine is more international in style, a touch of toasty oak spice and cassis berry fruit, and it is the most drinkable of all the wines except the Ca di Pian upon release.

Although La Spinetta focuses on native varieties such as Nebbiolo, Barbera, and Moscato, it does produce a Sauvignon Blanc and a Chardonnay.  Giorgio assures that because these international varieties are planted in such small quantities, their production does not distract from the estate’s attention and passion towards the local varieties.  The Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay are made in a lean old world style.  They show strong terroir characteristics and pronounced fruit.  La Spinetta’s Bianco is 100% Sauvignon Blanc.  The vines are grown at a very hi-altitude that leads to crispness, freshness and a wonderful perfume in the glass.  This Sauvignon Blanc is very Loire like in style with good minerality and a strong sense of terroir.  In a blind tasting with Daganau’s Pur Sang, La Spinetta’s Bianco proved to by a far more complex and interesting wine.  The wine is 50% barrel fermented and 50 % stainless steel fermented.  La Spinetta’s Chardonnay is called Lidia, in memory of Giorgio’s mother.  It is 100% barrel fermented Chardonnay.  It spends a year in oak followed by approximately 6 months in stainless steel.  It is a rich and full-bodied wine with an elegance and complexity.  They have recently added a Vermentino from their Tuscan grapes to offer and entry level white to the portfolio of La Spinetta wines.

In 2001, La Spinetta acquired 65 hectares of vineyards in Tuscany to make three different Sangiovese based wines, and so the Rivetti horizon continues to expand. La Spinetta’s newest project lies in Tuscany in the village of Terricciola between Pisa and Volterra.  Here they make their Sezzana, a 95% Sangiovese from Casciana Terme, as Sangiovese is the ambassador of the Tuscan terrain. The remaining 5% are Colorino, another Tuscan indigenous grape variety, that gives a dark ruby red color to the wine. From the 65 hectare of vineyards we also make another 95% Sangiovese single vineyard wine, called Sassontino. These Sangiovese grapes grow near Casanova, Terriciola. The first vintage of Sassontino was 2003, released in 2006.

The newest thing is the acquisition of the Contratto winery in the Piedmont which means that the Rivetti's now own a premier Sparkling wine label.  Although they did make other wines in addition to methode champenoise sparkling wines at Contratto in the past they are focusing solely on the sparkling wines under this label now.

(93 Points) A fabulous nose of Christmas pudding, plum and lemongrass leads to a full body, with soft, silky tannins and beautiful fruit. Best after 2012. 960 cases made. -JS Wine Spectator Issue: Sep 30, 2009

2007 La Spinetta Barbaresco Gallina

Price: $232.50                 Your Price: $204.60                      Quantity in Stock: 2

(93 points) The 2007 Barbaresco Vigneto Gallina is focused and nicely articulated. This is a rather firm, nuanced Gallina from La Spinetta with gorgeous length, tons of detail and fabulous overall balance. It is at once more concentrated and also deeper than the Bordini, so another few years in bottle seem a prerequisite. The Gallina is the most improved wine the estate’s lineup. The 2007 is quite possibly the most polished, elegant Gallina I have ever tasted here. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2027. (AG) (12/2010) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

2008 La Spinetta Barbaresco Gallina

Price: $232.50                 Your Price: $204.60                      Quantity in Stock: 7

A soft and persuasive Barbaresco. Velvety tannins and great body define this wine, that ends with a fruity finish and floral note.

2020 La Spinetta Gallina Barbaresco

Price: $192.00                 Your Price: $168.96                      Quantity in Stock: 5

(93 Points) The La Spinetta 2020 Barbaresco Gallina Vürsù (with the green label and heavy bottle) has a slightly sweet side that is reinforced by the warm sunshine of the summer season but also from the oak aging. It goes into barrique for 22 months. There is ripe cherry and cassis along with spice and cured tobacco. The wine is open-knit and quite accessible in terms of mouthfeel. This Barbaresco is pretty much ready to drink straight out of the gate.  Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

2008 La Spinetta Barbaresco Starderi image

2004 La Spinetta Vursu Vigneto Starderi Barbaresco

Price: $250.00                 Sale Price: $199.00                       Quantity in Stock: 1

2006 La Spinetta Barbaresco Starderi

Price: $235.00                 Your Price: $206.80              Quantity in Stock: 1

(93 Points) Wonderfully floral, with cream and berry aromas. Full-bodied, with round, chewy tannins and lots of fruit. Generous and rich for the vintage. Best after 2012. 1,200 cases made. -JS Wine Spectator Issue: Sep 30, 2009

2007 La Spinetta Barbaresco Starderi

Price: $235.00                 Your Price: $206.80

(94 points) The 2007 Barbaresco Vigneto Starderi bursts from the glass with red berries, sweet spices, roses and mint, all of which come together on a powerful, richly structured frame that is the hallmark of Barbareschi from Neive. The Starderi is the most tannic of the estate’s 2007s but it is a wine with significant promise and a long road ahead of very fine drinking. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2027. Wine Advocate #192 Dec 2010

2008 La Spinetta Barbaresco Starderi

Price: $235.00                 Your Price: $206.80        `              Quantity in Stock: 2

(93 Points) The 2008 Barbaresco Vigneto Starderi is the biggest, most powerful and also most complete of the 2008 Barbarescos here, but it will require considerable patience. Huge, massive tannins provide the backdrop to a core of expressive dark fruit, flowers, mint and licorice. This is a virile Barbaresco with plenty of stuffing to age well, but it needs time for the tannins to soften. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2026. Wine Advocate #197, Oct 2011

2007 La Spinetta Valeirano Barbaresco image

2004 La Spinetta Barbaresco Valeirano

Price: $250.00                 Sale Price: $199.00                       Quantity in Stock: 2

(93 Points)  Good bright, deep red. Musky, wild aromas of dark berries, truffle, tobacco and game, complicated by a saline element. Then silky-sweet, concentrated and still young on the palate, with the deep truffley quality giving another dimension to the wine's intense berry fruit. Finishes lightly salty and long, with harmonious oak. There's no rush to drink this wine, and it may yet improve with more time in bottle. The oak is apparent here but as a group these 2004 have nicely absorbed their new barrique influence. (ST)   Review Date: 11/2013  Vinous

2000 La Spinetta Barbaresco Valeirano

Price: $270.00                 Sale Price: $215.00                       Quantity in Stock: 1

(93 Points) Shows the essence of Nebbiolo fruit, with freshly cut plum, flowers and a hint of orange peel. Full-bodied, with lovely, silky tannins and a soft, superrich finish. Luscious and ripe. (JS)  Wine Spectator, Review Date: 11/2003

2006 La Spinetta Barbaresco Valeirano

Price: $235.00                 Your Price: $206.80                      Quantity in Stock: 2

(91 Points) The 2006 Barbaresco Vigneto Valeirano is another exuberant wine. Here, too, the aromatics literally jump out of the glass, as layers of perfumed super-ripe fruit are intermingled with a persistent vein of minerality. The powerful, focused Valeirano offers outstanding balance, but needs a few years in bottle for the tannins to melt away. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2021. Wine Advocate # 185, Oct 2009

2007 La Spinetta Barbaresco Valeirano

Price: $235.00                 Your Price: $206.80                      Quantity in Stock: 1

(94 Points) Suave and silky, this red boasts wild aromas and flavors of menthol and forest underbrush to complement its sweet cherry and berry notes. Opulent and dense, with complexity and a lingering aftertaste of fruit, woodsy spices and mineral. (BS)  Review Date: 12/2011, Wine Spectator

2008 La Spinetta Barbaresco Valeirano

Price: $235.00                 Your Price: $206.80                      Quantity in Stock: 4

Red cherry kirsch and lovely licorice spice on the nose floral notes, a big and seductive wine with a lot of ripe and seductive red cherry kirsch like fruit. Big and chewy on the tongue with layers of red cherry fruit spice and dried rose petal fruit a bit lighter than the Starderi this year but still has great length and lots of fresh acidity through the finish. Finish 45+ MOST EXCELLENT

2018 La Spinetta Barbaresco Valeirano

Price: $177.00                 Your Price: $155.76

(96 Points) Valeirano is located within Treiso, where a similar soil content to that of Serralunga d’Alba lends more structure and depth to the wines. The 2018 Barbaresco Valeirano Versu is expressive with tar, black cherry, and licorice. It has a more powerful structure on the palate that remains finessed and compact. Allow for 3-5 years in cellar and drink 2024-2045.  jebdunnuck.com, May 2021

2005 La Spinetta Barolo Campe

Price: $247.00                 Your Price: $217.36

(93 Points) Intense ripe berry and dried fruit on the nose, with rose petal. Full-bodied, with silky tannins and a mahogany, fruity, almost nutty undertone. Ripe and round. Very soft and pretty. (BS)  Wine Spectator, Review Date: 07/2009

2006 La Spinetta Barolo Campe

Price: $247.00                 Your Price: $217.36

The 2006 Barolo Campe’ is one of the most elegant wines I have ever tasted from La Spinetta. A deep, translucent red, the Campe’ opens with a captivating bouquet of roses, spices, flowers and cherries, all of which resonate on the palate. The wine turns muscular in the glass, with powerful tannins that frame the expressive, generous fruit. There is plenty of richness and concentration, yet without the over-ripeness and excessive oakiness of past vintages. Smoke, tar and herbs are just some of the nuances that come to life as the dense fruit provides a wonderful foil to the tannins on the finish. This, too, is a terrific effort from La Spinetta. The 2006 Campe’ was fermented in rotary tanks for 7-8 days and underwent malolactic fermentation in new French oak, where the wine was aged for 24 months prior to being bottled. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2026. [93-points Antonio Galloni, The Wine Advocate]

2007 La Spinetta Barolo Campe

(95 Points) There is no doubt the 2007 Barolo Campe is impressive. It is a beautifully balanced wine layered with opulent, super-ripe fruit, new leather and licorice. The French oak is beautifully balanced in this broad-shouldered Barolo, while the fruit avoids the overripe tendencies of the past. The wine holds up perfectly in the glass, which hasn’t always been the case. Tar, licorice and spices wrap around the intense finish. This is the finest vintage of Campe to date. Kudos to Giorgio Rivetti and his team for this fabulous effort. To be released in 2012. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024. Wine Advocate #197, Oct 2011

2020 La Spinetta Barolo Campe

Price: $210.75                 Your Price: $185.46

(93 Points) The 2020 Barolo Campè is an attractive, open-knit Barolo from La Spinetta. There is no getting around the fact that the aromas and flavors are on the forward side for such a young wine, which suggests some challenges in farming and/or winemaking. Sweet dried cherry, mint, spice, leather and tobacco linger.  Vinous

2010 La Spinetta Barolo Campe Riserva Magnum

Price: $930.00                 Your Price: $818.40

Grapes for the magnum Riserva come exclusively from the highest part of the Campè vineyard, the best location for these sustainably-farmed vines, tended without the use of pesticides or herbicides (or even tractors or heavy machinery that might compress the earth). The result is a harvest of the purest, most exceptional grapes, which are then transformed into an intense vibrant red wine, with subtle and complex aromas of strawberries, red roses, citrus and fresh hazelnuts. This is full- bodied, yet reserved and beautiful Barolo with an incredible backbone of firm, composed tannins. The silky texture and extraordinary depth of fruit mesmerize up to the very end of the Campè Riserva’s long, long finish. Released 10 years after harvest.

(92 Points) "Loads of citrus, leaning toward bitter orange and ruby red grapefruit, emerge from this wine. The palate is tart and zippy, with a touch of green guava candy, bright acidity and great structure finishing with a tight and persistent perlage." - Wine Enthusiast

The grapes for this come from a vineyard that is 500 meters and the grapes are dried in the cellar until the end of December and then alcoholic fermentation in New French oak. This wine spends 4-5 years in oak but you do not get a lot of that oaky flavor just the right touch with balance with excellent acidity. Giorgio's son Andrea was the mind behind this wine and his very first vintage the 1998 was outstanding. Giorgio jokes that he made Moscato for 20 years before this and has never had quite as complex a wine. This 2005 has an incredible bouquet of lavender and floral aromas with lots of tropical fruit peach and quince with a note of honey and orange peel. Lovely balance with a smooth and creamy texture but bright and fresh on the finish leaving the tongue salivating for food. Finish 45+ Most Excellent
