Domaine Des Lambrays 2021 Offering and all the Grand Cru Monopoles in the store on SALE!!

"Therefore God give thee of the dew of heaven, and the fatness of the earth, and plenty of corn and wine."

Genesis 27:28

Unfortunately, god did not give us plenty of Clos des Lambrays.  One of the reasons that Burgundy is one of the most expensive wines on the planet earth is that they had 1000 years to promote their wines.   Many of the regions top wines are in such limited supply that their production just over 2500 cases in most vintages of this great nearly monopole Grand Cru wine.  The other reason is that they have had a thousand years of marketing in the wine industry.  There are not many regions of the wine world that have the history of Burgundy's Cote D'Or and with that history comes a very high price tag.

Burgundy is simple in that there are only 2 grapes grown here, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay but there are over 600 named wines making it incredibly confusing.  With all the different villages there are only 4 that are categorized as Grand Cru Monopole.  Monopole means that there is only a single producer that makes wine from this vineyard and Grand Cru means that the dirt here is considered to be the most unique conducive to making KILLER juice every year.

The Clos Du Lambrays is almost owned entirely by one person, this property was recently acquired by Bernard Arnault the owner of LVMH.  The remaining tenth of an acre of Clos des Lambrays belongs to Domaine Taupenot-Merme. Co-owner and winemaker Romain Taupenot said that any dream Arnault might have of a monopoly will have to wait. "If Bernard Arnault would like to sell to us a part of the Clos des Lambrays that he just bought, we would obviously be ready to listen," said Taupenot as quoted in the Wine Spectator.

2021 DOMAINE DES LAMBRAYS CLOS DES LAMBRAYS GRAND CRU

Price: $735.00               Your Price: $646.80

(98 Points) The 2021 Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru is tasted from separate cuvées and as a final blend. Containing around 80% whole bunches and 60% new oak, it has a beautifully-defined bouquet with dark berry fruit, bay leaf and a touch of white pepper that unfurls in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannins, raspberry and red plum, sage and white pepper, leading to a very harmonious finish with a hint of underlying citrus fruit. Heavenly. Vinous

A bit about The Domaine:

The very first reference to « Clos des Lambrays » traces back to the fourteenth century. Archives of the Abbey of Cîteaux reveal its founding around 1365. An engraved milestone, still in its original location, commemorates the founding. After the French Revolution, the Clos became extremely fragmented. Based on the archives and maps of the vines owned by the Domaine, the survival and recomposition of the fragments of the Clos des Lambrays was due in large part to the strong vision and willpower of its different owners during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

In 1936, when the first appellations d’origine are issued, the Clos des Lambrays was listed as a Premier Cru However, this proved to be a misnomer as the wine was always considered to be a Grand Cru by experts.

In between Gevrey-Chambertin and Chambolle-Musigny, the village of Morey-Saint-Denis quietly produces many Grands Crus: Clos des Lambrays, Bonnes-Mares, Clos Saint-Denis, Clos de la Roche, Clos de Tart. Among the Côte de Nuits, Morey-Saint-Denis is the village with the largest concentration of vines ranked as Grands Crus.

The Clos des Lambrays benefits from an especially unique location. This Cru is a “haut-lieu”, an emblematic point within Côte de Nuits. The smooth slopes of the hillside are subjected to different and complex sun exposures where the vines have been planted and grown for 30, 50, 60 years, or even longer. The size, width and amplitude and the topographical diversity of these slopes give the Pinot noir an optimal and varied terroir.

At the heart and the summit of the estate visitors will find… the eponymous Clos. There are also two plots of the Morey-Saint-Denis Premier Cru and four plots of the Morey-Saint-Denis village, all of them planted with Pinot noir. With the acquisition of a few “ouvrées” of Chardonnay of two “Climats” classified as Premier Cru in Puligny-Montrachet, les Folatières and the Clos du Cailleret, the estate is now complete.

The estate also boasts a castle and its ancient cellar, dating back to the seventeenth century, and of one of the most beautiful gardens of the region. The garden features a three hundred year old cedar as well as orchids and a collection of roses. This classical beauty of the grounds contribute heavily to the wine’s aesthetic qualities.

Clos Du Lambrays is the closest thing to a Grand Cru Monopole in the Cotes De Nuits as it is almost owned entirely by one person.  This property was recently acquired by Bernard Arnault the owner of LVMH.  Clos des Lambrays is an enclosed vineyard of almost 21.5 acres near the village of Morey-St.-Denis.   Domaine des Lambrays owns 21.4 acres of the clos, which dates back to the 14th century and was once part of the vast holdings of the Abbey of Citeaux.  The remaining tenth of an acre of Clos des Lambrays belongs to Domaine Taupenot-Merme.

2010 Domaine des Lambrays Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru

List Price: $650.00          Your Price: $572.00              Quantity in Stock: 2

(97 points) The 2010 Clos des Lambrays is unequivocally the most profound young wine I have ever tasted from this great domaine. The stunningly complex and very floral bouquet offers up a supremely elegant aromatic mélange of cherries, blood orange, a touch of red plum, kaleidoscopic minerality, woodsmoke, peonies, violets, a nice dollop of fresh herbs and a discreet base of new oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and beautifully pure on the attack, with a reserved and refined personality, a sappy core of red fruit, flawless focus and balance, very suave, but substantial tannins, tangy acids and glorious transparency on the seamless and boundless finish. Just a brilliant, brilliant wine in 2010! (JG) (11/2011)  John Gilman

2013 DOMAINE DES LAMBRAYS MOREY ST DENIS

Price: $195.00                 Your Price: $171.60              Quantity in Stock: 6

(96 Points)  The 2013 Clos des Lambrays will be another legendary vintage for this great cuvée. The stunningly refined nose delivers a brilliant constellation of red and black cherries, dark plums, cassis, woodsmoke a beautiful base of minerality, espresso, gamebirds, cocoa and a deft framing of new wood. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, pure and very transparent in personality out of the blocks, with a rock solid core of sappy black fruit, fine-grained tannins and stellar length and grip on the laser-like and dancing finish. This will end up being one of the greatest vintages of Clos des Lambrays from the Brouin era, and there have been an awful lot of great wines made during his tenure here!  JG View From The Cellar, November 2014

2014 DOMAINE DES LAMBRAYS CLOS DES LAMBRAYS GRAND CRU MAGNUM

Price: $1125.00               Your Price: $990.00              Quantity in Stock: 3

(93-95 points) The 2014 Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru is matured in 50% new oak and is 100% whole bunch fruit. It is blessed with a winsome bouquet. As usual, there is something very natural, unimposing and refined on the nose: blackberry and briary, a hint of graphite, a subtle leafiness maybe, and yet delineated and very pure. The palate is lively and energetic with crisp tannin, black rather than red fruit, linear and very classic in style with what you might call a "cool" marine-influenced finish that has fine salinity. What a great Clos des Lambrays that will put a smile on the face of those that adore refined Burgundy. Thierry Brouin has one year remaining as winemaker at Domaine de Lambrays and then a contractual two years as a consultant. "I'll be 70 by then," he told me with a Gallic shrug of the shoulders. "It's time for new blood." What with Sylvain Pitiot's retirement from Clos des Tart, it appears that a chapter in Morey-Saint-Denis is closing and a new one will be opening. The question is: will the next chapter be as good a read as the last? I hope so. (NM) (12/2015) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

2016 Domaine des Lambrays Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru

Price: $335.00   Your Price: $294.80        Quantity in Stock: 2

(96 points) The grand cru here was raised in fifty percent new oak this year and is one of the stars of the 2016 vintage. The stunning bouquet delivers a complex combination of red and black cherries, black plums, pigeon, dark soil tones, raw cocoa, woodsmoke and a touch of nutty oak. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and shows off beautiful depth at the core, with plenty of sappiness in reserve, a great soil signature, ripe, suave tannins and a very, very long, nascentlycomplex and vibrant finish. I love this wine’s potential!  (1/2018) John Gilman

2017 Domaine des Lambrays Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru

Price: $399.00   Your Price: $351.12        Quantity in Stock: 20

(95 points “The 2017 Clos des Lambrays was still quite youthful, but was showing truly stunning potential on both the nose and palate. The bouquet is still fairly primary, but sports outstanding depth and nascent complexity in its constellation of cassis, black cherries, sweet dark berries, exotic touches of both eucalyptus and lavender, a superb base of soil, heather and a sound foundation of cedary new oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and suave on the attack, with sappy core, excellent soil signature, fine-grained tannins and a long, closed and classy finish. The oak component here is beautifully done and there are absolutely no issues with the wine’s ultimate balance, but I had the sensation that it was clamping down on the wine a bit more than was customary for Clos des Lambrays as this point in its evolution. Perhaps it was just my imagination, as the wine will no doubt be absolutely superb in the fullness of time. (Drink between 2027-2085) (12/2018)  John Gilman

(95 points) The 2019 Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru is showing very well in bottle, wafting from the glass with aromas of raspberries, strawberries and plums mingled with scents of orange rind, rose petals and sweet spices. Full-bodied, ample and satiny, it's a sensual, caressing wine with a fleshy core of fruit, polished tannins and lively balancing acids. This will offer a broad drinking window -Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The other Grand Cru Monopoles of Burgundy:

Domaine de la Romanee-Conti DRC Romanee ...

Romanée-Conti is an Appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC) and Grand Cru vineyard for red wine in the Côte de Nuits subregion of Burgundy, France, with Pinot Noir as the primary grape variety. It is situated within the commune of Vosne-Romanée and is a monopole of the winery Société Civile du Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, which takes its name after this vineyard. Romanée-Conti borders on La Romanée in the west, Richebourg in the north, Romanée-Saint-Vivant in the east and La Grande Rue in the south. The AOC was created in 1936.

Wine from the vineyard is among the most sought after, and expensive, in the world. In October 2010, 77 bottles sold for a total of US$750,609 (about US$9,748 each) at auction.  Ferran Adrià sold four bottles of Romanée-Conti 2004 for US$52,062 at a Sotheby’s auction in New York in April 2013.  On 13 October 2018, at Sotheby's of New York, a single bottle of Romanée-Conti 1945 from the cellar of Robert Drouhin sold for $558,000.

Wine critic Clive Coates praised the Romanée-Conti as: "the purest, most aristocratic and most intense example of Pinot noir you could possibly imagine. Not only nectar: a yardstick with which to judge all other Burgundies." Roald Dahl once wrote of it, "Sense for me this perfume! Breathe this bouquet! Taste it! Drink it! But never try to describe it! Impossible to give an account of such a delicacy with words! To drink Romanée-Conti is equivalent to experiencing an orgasm at once in the mouth and in the nose."

In 2008, 1.88 hectares (4.6 acres) of vineyard land was in production within the AOC, and 26 hectoliters of wine was produced, corresponding to just under 3,500 bottles. The five-year average annual production of the period 2003-2007 was somewhat higher, 42 hectoliters, corresponding to 5,600 bottles.

Price: $1350.00               Sale Price: $950.00              Quantity in Stock: 1

La Grande Rue is an Appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC) and Grand Cru vineyard for red wine in the Côte de Nuits subregion of Burgundy, with Pinot Noir as the main grape variety.

In general its character is feminine rather than powerful. It has some of the character of the neighboring La Tâche, but is more delicate. "The overall style is fruity with fresh, red fruit aromas and gentle tannins ...Young it shows a promising note of petits fruits rouges and hints of blackcurrant. These positive, complex aromas overlay a wine of dimension and substance, with length and finesse; a complete wine without being in any way heavy."[1] It can contain "nuances of raspberry and violet",with a bouquet of "a profusion of flowers" "It gains from being decanted and often delivers wild game aromas ... Age embellishes it"

2021 DOMANIE FAIVELEY CLOS DES CORTONS FAIVELEY MONOPOLE GRAND CRU

Price: $508.50                 Your Price: $447.48

Corton Clos des Cortons Faiveley is the only Grand Cru in Burgundy alongside Romanée-Conti to bear the name of its proprietor. The name was confirmed in court in 1937. This unique 7-acre parcel sits on the northern extremity of the hill of Corton fairly high up the slope surrounded by the famous “Le Corton” parcel. Soils are poor and well drained, made up primarily of iron-based stones and clay. The majority of the vineyard was planted between 1936 and 1967 with younger plantings up to 2002.

2015 Mommessin Clos de Tart Grand Cru Monopole image

2015 MOMMESSIN CLOS DE TART GRAND CRU MONOPOLE

Price: $1350.00               Your Price: $1188.00

(97-99 points) The 2015 Clos de Tart Grand Cru was tasted both as separate cuvées from individual parcels around the vineyard (always a stimulating and insightful exercise) and of course, as the final blend, assembled in the same proportion as eventually bottled. It has a classic bouquet, a mixture of red and black fruit, hints of dried rose petals in a vase and a distant sea-spray scent that becomes more accentuated with time in the glass. There is a sense of restraint here, keeping lock and key on the precocity of the growing season. The palate is very well balanced with a superb line of razor-sharp acidity, palpable 'coolness' imparted by the assiduous early picking. It is equipped with fine tannin, imbued with natural poise and gathers more black fruit towards the finish that offers a subtle slate-like note. It is one of the best I have tasted from this ancient vineyard, so assured and regal, destined to last more than 30 years with ease. (NM)  (12/2016)  Wine Advocate
