Domaine de La Vougeraie Vougeot 1er Cru Le Clos Blanc De Vougeot Monopole 2022 A top level white from the Cotes de Nuits – A Unicorn from Burgundy!!

of Pope St. John XXIII ...

Men are like wine, some turn to Vinegar but the best improve with age.

Pope John XIII

Wine doesn’t actually turn to vinegar by itself you need a bacteria called Acetobacter but who am I to argue with the pope?

One of the things that I can agree with the pope on is his choice of wines.  The Domaine De La Vougeraie Vougeot 1er Cru Le Clos Blanc De Vougeot Monopole is on the wine list at the Vatican and is one of the most unique wines in all of Burgundy.

The Cote de Nuits region of Burgundy is famous for the red wines but there are a few whites that are made here roughly 5% of the entire production thus all of them are incredibly hard to procure.  You have the Musigny blanc from Domaine de Compte de Vogue, Jacques Frederic Mugnier Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru Clos de la Maréchale Blanc, Domaine Dujac Morey Saint Denis Blanc and this Domaine De La Vougeraie Vougeot 1er Cru Le Clos Blanc De Vougeot Monopole.

Wine Watch Review: The 1er Cru Les Clos Blanc de Vougeot is located adjacent to the famous Clos Vougeot and was first harvested in 1115.  This site has a unique outcropping of limestone making it suitable for whites as the surrounding vineyards are all planted to Pinot Noir.  This wine is laden with fresh tree fruits, lemon, green apple and quince with hints of white flowers, cinnamon and vanilla spice and a chalky wet stone like minerality.  An elegant and creamy wine on the tongue with layers of fruit, tongue tingly mineral and lightly toasted oak spice, a lovely richness and balance to the finish that just goes on and on.  Give this wine a decade or two in the cellar or decanter it for 2 hours before serving.  Finish 50+     TASTING DATE 2/27/25.  KILLER

Though Vougeot is best known for the highly reputed Clos de Vougeot, covering almost 51 hectares, the Premier Cru and Village appellations in the remaining 16.5 hectares should not be forgotten. Connoisseurs yearn for this wine, from vineyards in such a fabled position.

For the first 680 years of this vineyard’s history, it was tended by the monks of Cîteaux, who planted the Clos de Vougeot and the majority of the neighboring plots at the start of the 12th century. The Clos du Prieuré, like the rest, was sold off at the end of the 18th century under the French Revolution.

The Clos du Prieuré (priory enclosure) belonged to the Benedictine Priory of the Abbey of SaintGermain-des-Prés in Paris, who owned land in the neighboring parish of Gilly from the 11th century. As the Abbey of Cîteaux grew, conflicts with Saint-Germain-des-Prés were inevitable. In 1499 Jean de Cirey, Abbot of Cîteaux, after selling off part of the Abbey’s crockery, finally succeeded in paying off the debt to the Parisian Abbey, which was forced to accept some land near Melun in exchange for abandoning its rights at Gilly and Vougeot.

Vougeot is located in the Côte de Nuits, between Chambolle-Musigny and Vosne-Romanée, some twenty kilometres to the south of Dijon. The Clos du Prieuré name recalls the Priory, which used to own this land. The enclosure wall stands to this day, a rare occurrence in Burgundy. Located in the climat known as Le Village, it is separated from the neighbouring vines by a small track to the west and a stream to the East, the Vouge, which gave its name to the village and to our Domaine. The southern edge is bounded by the road leading to the Château du Clos de Vougeot, home of the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin.

A bit about the current owner of this vineyard and the Domaine De Vougeraie

Jean Claude Boisset has been a phenomenon in Burgundy, where since entering the wine business in 1961 he as become that famous region's second largest negociant. (A negociant is a wine producer who purchases grapes from independent small growers and makes the wine in his own cellars.)  That has been no small accomplishment, for most people in the Burgundy wine trade are members of families that have been in place for centuries.  His headquarters in France is located in Nuits St. Georges.  Offices, warehouses, and winemaking facilities cover six acres of land; and the firm now produces over one million cases of wine annually.  In addition Boisset owns about twenty-seven acres of "premier cru" vineyards in Nuits St. Georges and Gevrey Chambertin.  Boisset has also bought out the properties of Charles Vienot (Nuits St. Georges), Lionel Bruck (Nuits St. Georges), and Thomas Bassot (Gevrey Chambertin).  His neighbors in France consider him very radical, for he started the business from nothing and has built it into a very profitable enterprise.  In an area where tradition and time-proven methods are sacrosanct, Boisset's high-tech winery with computers and automated winemaking equipment raises more than a few eyebrows.

Today, the next Generation Jean Charles Boisset has continued the family tradition in The Boisset Collection embraces audacity & innovation and unites Old World and New into the One World of Wine, offering an unparalleled exploration of terroir, heritage, vineyards and style.

Boisset is a family-owned collection of historic and unique wineries bound together by a common cause: authentic, terroir-driven wines in harmony with their history, their future and the land and people essential to their existence.  With more than twenty historical and prestigious wineries in the world’s preeminent terroirs, including the Côte d’Or, Beaujolais, Rhône Valley, California’s Russian River Valley and the Napa Valley, each house retains its unique history, identity, and style, and all are united in the pursuit of fine wines expressive of their terroir.

Boisset embraces its Franco-American roots with their vision that a spirit of collaboration and commitment to wine on both continents will transcend any divisions. They believe that the union of the two worlds of winemaking will deepen their shared appreciation of their distinctness, diversity and unity, and enrich and enliven our worlds. We are inspired to think that together, we can unite two continents and two cultures around wine… Oceans may separate us, but wine unites us!

More than seventeen centuries of combined history unite the wineries of Boisset. Cistercian monks planted the vineyards of Le Clos Vougeot in 1110, inspiring Domaine de la Vougeraie to this day. Bouchard Aîné & Fils has built its family reputation in Beaune since 1750. Buena Vista Winery is California’s first premium winery, founded in Sonoma in 1857. These are just a few examples of the remarkable history of the Boisset Collection. Deepening the legacies of each of its estates is at the core of Boisset’s mission.

The Domaine de la Vougeraie was created by bringing together the Boisset family’s vineyards and other wine estates acquired over the years. The first of these goes back to 1964 with the first plot, Les Evocelles, in the village of Gevrey-Chambertin, which was bought by Jean Claude when he started out.

More than 20 years later came a second phase, with the addition of more vineyards including the Boisset families first foothold on the Côte de Beaune. In 1996, the vineyards which today make up the third of their estate on the Côte de Beaune were acquired. This was followed by the acquisition of Le Clos Blanc, the famous monopole which produces its renowned golden nectar. These vines in their family village were the natural inspiration for the Domaine de la Vougeraie, like a return to Jean Charles and Nathalie’s childhood roots.

Today the Domaine de la Vougeraie is the crown jewel of the Boisset Families Burgundy portfolio and their holdings are up to 47 hectares including 38 Parcels all farmed using biodynamic methods and they have up to 140 people working the harvest picking the grapes and sorting by hand after the selection in the vineyard.  They decide at the sorting table if the destem or use whole cluster that vintage a decision that changes from year to year based on the harvest conditions.  All the cellar work is gravity fed and they buy all the wood for the barrels and air dry the staves for three years and sue a combination of four different local coopers that make their barrels which they use 20% new wood fo rthe village wines and 30% new for the Grand cru.

As old as the Clos de Vougeot, The Clos Blanc de Vougeot was Cîteaux Abbey’s song of praise. The monks planted the first vines nine centuries ago, and the white wine pressed from the golden grapes filled the abbey-church’s cruets for almost 700 years. Such precious drops of gold, blinding and rare, are like an island of Chardonnay in an ocean of Pinot Noir... A single violin at the heart of an orchestra.

The Clos Blanc de Vougeot used to be known as the Petit Clos Blanc de Cîteaux, or simply Vougeot’s white vineyard. Like the Clos de Vougeot, it was founded by the monks of Cîteaux, which was constructed on the nearby plain in 1098. Saint Bernard was almost certainly present at the first harvests in Vougeot, which date back to 1110.

This vineyard has always been planted with white grapes, a tradition started when the Cîteaux monks planted the forerunners of today’s Chardonnay to produce a white wine for their sacrament.

This walled vineyard is special for another very rare reason. Despite the French Revolution in 1789 when national property was sold off, the Clos Blanc de Vougeot remained a monopole, an undivided property.

Nurtured by Jules Ouvrard then Jules Régnier in the 19th Century, it belonged to L’Héritier-Guyot in the 20th Century and now forms a part of the Domaine de la Vougeraie, sole owner of the monopole.

Volnay sits up high, dominating the Côte de Beaune, and on a clear day, one can see as far as Mont Blanc. And this broad scope is reflected in its wines. Volnay is a traditional Burgundy village, with a relatively low profile that focuses fully on its vines.

This wine comes from two plots from two neighboring climats, covering 1.5 hectares and with a great deal in common. Facing south-southeast, they are drenched in sunshine and have such prestigious neighbors as Taille Pieds and Cailleret. This side of Volnay is close by Monthélie and Meursault, and is where the line of the Côte takes a turn from east-facing to southeast.

Le Clos des Chênes has a choice place in the lineage of Volnay premier crus. Part of our plot is classed as Volnay Village in Le Clos des Chênes (0.6736 hectares) and is located on the side of the Chaignot (or Chagnot) hill, which explains its long-standing name. Le Clos des Chênes is among those excellent cuvées highlighted in 1855 by Dr Jules Lavalle, covering 16.2740 hectares, making it the biggest climat of the appellation, which, at the time, was considered equal to Taille Pieds. He considered its wines to be “Of the first order.” The climat today covers 15 hectares.

When Martine saw a barrow load of bottles wheeled into the kitchen, she stood still. She touched the bottles and lifted one up. “What is there in this bottle, Babette?” she asked in a low voice. “Not wine?” “Wine, Madame!” Babette answered “No, Madame. It is a Clos de Vougeot 1846!” Karen Blixen, in Babette’s Feast, has captured the essence of Clos de Vougeot. It is not just a wine, but an emotion, a presence, an event... .

When Cîteaux Abbey was founded in 1098, the first monks were also given some land nearby. The Clos de Vougeot was planted shortly afterwards, in 1110. At this time Saint Bernard was tracing the outlines which gave the Cistercian order recognition throughout Christendom. This vineyard thrived under the Cistercian tonsure for 680 years, becoming an ideal present to obtain favours from popes or kings! The second chapter of the Clos’ history lasted a hundred years. Under the Phrygian cap, it was considered as national property and sold to dignitaries by the Revolution. Julien-Jules Ouvrard, son of a famous Napoleonic war financier, owned it from 1818 to 1861. The Clos was inherited by his children, married into the Rochechouart and Montalembert families, before being sold to six local wine merchants in 1889. Since then the parcels have been divided many times, but the Clos de Vougeot remains the true heart of Burgundy wine. In around 1550 the 48th Abbot of Cîteaux, Jean Loisier, built the Château at the centre of the Clos. Inspired by the Renaissance, its square towers are clearly reminiscent of the Middle Ages. Elegant and functional, as it also serves as a vat room and cellar, the Château du Clos de Vougeot is simply exceptional – nothing ostentatious, but truly inspired. The chateau has been the seat of the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin since 1945, making it the best table d’hôte in France. Clos de Vougeot is both a vineyard and a wine, a historic monument and a certain image of France. Extending the universal spirit of Cîteaux, the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin is open to the world. This temple of wine is a work of patience, resplendent after nearly a millennium of human effort and nature’s graces. Léonce Bocquet (1839-1913) owned the château and some fifteen hectares in the Clos. Responsible for the restoration of the château, he was a man of great panache. When the Grand Marshal of the court of Hohenzollern, after spending three days tasting the Clos’ wine, ordered 200 bottles, he replied, “Tell your Emperor that I will not invoice a mere 200 bottles. I offer them”. Léonce Bocquet is buried in front of the château.

HISTORY:  The citadel, founded in around 1000 AD, derives its name from the Nuicthons, or walnut trees, which were abundant nearby. The strong ramparts protected its inhabitants, nobles, wine growers and religious communities. In the 18th century the town started to export its wine, and several wine merchants sprung up in the following century. The Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin was created here in the 1930s. To help protect the wine industry, badly hit by the Great Depression, they created the Saint-Vincent Tournante wine festival and the Tastevinage seal of approval.
