We like sweet words, but we like wine better and this year we are studying wines that are 20, 30, and 40 years of age. We have the first in the series of tastings next Saturday with the 1986 vintage or 40 year-old Bordeaux tasting. Then, on to Napa Valley on Thursday February 5th and to follow that a study of 20 year old Italian wines on the very next night Friday February 6th. To complete the study we have the 30-year study combining Bordeaux and Napa Valley on Saturday March 14th.
This is true scientific research that we are doing here at the Wine Watch, checking each bottle to see when the best time to consume for the most drinking pleasure. It's hard work but we are willing to sacrifice our body for our wine drinking people. These wines are all from the outstanding 2006 vintage from California and they are now at 20 years of age which is what many would consider to be fully mature.
The 2006 vintage was outstanding in many places on Earth for wine, but I remember being most excited about the wines of Tuscany, Piedmont and Northern California.
We have a few things in the store from 2006 but right now so I have included them on this offering. for those of you that can’t make this tasting, so check out the 2006’s they are now in their glory years but will drink nicely for many more decades if you like vintage wines.

Inky ruby. Brooding aromas of blackcurrant and kirsch, with complicating notes of incense and fruitcake gaining strength in the glass. Expansive dark berry liqueur and bitter cherry flavors become smoky and meaty with air, gaining depth and structure too. The finish is surprisingly fresh and focused, with a strong cracked pepper note that lingers tenaciously. Really benefits from aeration, suggesting that this youngster should be stashed away for a while.

Hendry Blocks 8, 16, 17 and 18 are located on bench lands west of the town of Napa. The vines grow on thin stony soil between 150 and 300 feet above sea level. Morning fog and strong afternoon breezes from San Pablo Bay moderate our vineyard’s climate.
The vines in Block 8 were planted in 1974 and are 35 years old. They are spaced 8’ x 10’, cordon-trained. The clone is U.C.D. 7, grafted to St. George roots. A seven-foot vertical trellis system supports the cordon and the canopy. Average production is approximately 2 tons per acre. Blocks 16, 17, and 18 were planted in 1996, 1996, and 1997. They are also on St. George rootstock. They are grafted to U.C.D. clones 7 and 4, and 337/15. Their inclusion in our Cabernet Sauvignon marks a milestone in the vines' maturity. At 12 and 13 years old, they have reached a significant level of depth and complexity.
In 2006, the median budbreak was April 15- 17th. Median bloom was June 4 and median veraison was August 9th. Harvest was October 10 – 17th. Yields averaged 2.2 tons per acre throughout the Cabernet blocks. After a warm extended maceration, the wine was aged for 21 months in 100% new French oak barrels. 100% Cabernet Sauvignon.
Release notes: The majority of the grapes for this wine (54%) still come from the venerable Block 8, one of our oldest and most consistently distinctive blocks. Silky entry, surprisingly rich upon first opening, though patience is rewarded. Textbook Cabernet aromas of berry/currant, cocoa, mint, eucalyptus and cedary oak reveal themselves with time and air. Structured, fine-grained tannins.

(95 Points) The 2006 Insignia (95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petit Verdot; 16,000 cases produced) is a superb effort in this vintage. Another 30+ year wine, it boasts a dense plum/purple color as well as abundant notes of licorice, black currants, charcoal, black olives, and graphite. Full-bodied, pure, and rich with moderately high tannins, it represents a California version of a Bordeaux from Pauillac or St.-Julien. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2045.
In case you think the aging curves I have described are unrealistically long, I have the Joseph Phelps regular Cabernets from the mid-seventies as well as the Insignias in my cellar, and those wines are still drinking beautifully at 30+ years of age. (94+ Points) The full-bodied 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon does not possess any of the hard, foreboding tannins found in some 2006 Cabernets, but rather, it displays a silky, velvety personality. Although not as nuanced or complex as the 2005, it is a brilliant wine offering generous levels of black currant fruit intermixed with graphite, scorched earth, and a hint of underlying smoke. It will be surprisingly delicious early in its life but capable of lasting two-plus decades.
One of the true blue chip vineyards and wines of Napa Valley, winemaker Celia Masyczek fashions approximately 400 cases of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from a legendary Rutherford vineyard with 60-year old vines.
