About our Honored Vintner Michel Rolland

Almost as if my life had been mapped out for me, I was born in 1947 at the hospital in Libourne, only four hundred metres from the Pomerol appellation, and four kilometres from Maillet. At the time, all the family lived in Maillet. It was only later -and because my grandfather already sold wines under the Bon Pasteur label, that we began to say "going to Bon Pasteur" instead of "going to Maillet". For me, however, it will always be Maillet. I grew up there, played with my brother, walked through the vines with my grandfather - all the unforgettable childhood memories of tastes and smells, and day-to-day life in a family environment in the countryside...

Our names are Dany and Michel Rolland, oenologist-farmers. We have put our passion and experience to work to add several French and foreign productions to our family heritage, bringing them all together in the "Rolland Collection".

Rolland Collection is a range of Bordeaux wines with 5 appellations from the right bank, where the Rolland family originated, in Pomerol. Added to this we have our favourites from "abroad", discovered when travelling for our work: the New World, with three wines from Argentina and two from South Africa, then Spain and after that, who knows what other wine or personal adventures lie ahead.

Everything is organised and harmonised within the family, from vinification to sales, from the vine to the wine.

Respect, sensitivity, culture, open-mindedness and passion are all family traits.

Welcome to our world of wine which is also a round the world trip, with stories about the family and discoveries, illustrated with photos just like an album!

We hope it will spark your curiosity, your desire to understand and taste and that it will lead you to share the same passion for wine, searching for quality and pleasure in many grape varieties and terroirs!

Beaulieu Vineyards

Beaulieu Vineyards Merlot Napa 2014
Price: $22.50 Sale $19.80    Case $230

In the late 19th century Merlot was brought to California as part of the first great effort by American vintners to create a wine industry they hoped would rival that of France. A soft, gentle wine with flavors of just-picked berries often enhanced by smoky oak, Merlot tastes delicious sipped on its own and is soft and fruity enough to be a natural partner for food.

Beaulieu Vineyard sources Merlot grapes from select microclimates throughout Rutherford, Napa Valley and California’s Central Coast. Our wines have rich fruit character perfectly balanced by bright acidity and supported by firm tannins.

Beaulieu Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Napa 2013
Price: $28.00 Sale $24.68    Case $286

Our 2013 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon reflects the superb vintage with its deep, saturated blackberry, black cherry and ripe plum aromas and plush, saturated flavors. Hints of violet, toast and mocha add complexity. “I especially like the pronounced dark-fruit expression in this vintage,” says Winemaker Domenica Totty. “For the second year, Napa Valley experienced abundant sunshine—tempered by just the right amount of nightly fog—that ripened the grapes slowly and fully, followed by an easy, unrushed harvest with no threat of rain. In tasting our final blend, I find the ample, mature tannins provide supple structure and rich texture for the mouthfilling flavors. Nicely integrated toasty oak nuances add a little spiciness to the aromas and lingering finish. The growing season gave us a big, generous Napa Valley Cab that’s approachable and delicious now, yet promises cellar worthiness.”

Now in their second decade, these estate vineyards in the Mount Veeder, Napa Valley and Oak Knoll AVA’s have hit their stride, producing fruit with splendid concentration and power, compelling freshness and graceful complexity. Price: $41.25    Sale $36.30    Case $421

Fruit from the Reserve Merlot comes exclusively from Sonoma Valley vineyards, which are relatively well protected from extreme weather patterns such as excessive heat and wind. This protection allows for slow and even ripening throughout the growing season resulting in fruit with great color and deep flavors. After hand-sorting, the grapes underwent a five-day cold soak to extract optimal color and flavor. Prior to fermentation, a saigné was performed. The selected lots are fermented separately in stainless steel tanks. The wine is then aged in 100% French oak barrels, where it underwent malolactic fermentation, followed by 20 months of aging.

2012 Paraduxx Cabernet Blend Napa Valley
Price: $42.00    Sale $36.96    Case $429

Building on the Paraduxx tradition of artful blending, from time to time we craft Napa Valley wines highlighting different styles and varietals. This limited-production wine was inspired by a winemaking technique of fermenting two varietals together that is common in the Côte-Rôtie. We co-fermented Zinfandel with the skins from Viognier grapes and then combined that wine with Cabernet Sauvignon, resulting in a blend of the spice, fruit and bramble of Zinfandel, along with the rich texture and floral aromatics of Viognier and the structure of Cabernet Sauvignon.

2013 Pedestal Merlot Columbia Valley

List Price: $63.75  Your Price: $56.10

2013 Pedestal Merlot Columbia Valley image

As has been the case since Pedestal’s debut in 2003, Conner Lee Vineyards Merlot plays a dominant role in crafting a dark, rich wine of uncommon character. Candy Mountain Merlot enhances the wine’s complexity. Red Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon, from Taptiel Vineyards, builds richness and structure. Dionysus Vineyard Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc give the wine its vibrant character. 2013 Vintage: Growers learned from both 2003 and 2005, hot vintages that pushed the ripeness curve. They let canopies spread a bit more than usual and adjusted crop sizes to achieve the kind of balance they wanted. With that cooling trend starting in mid-September, the red wines should come with ripe flavors, moderate alcohol levels and vivid acidity.

(91 Points)  "A blend of 80% Malbec with Cabernet Sauvignon grown at 2,080 meters altitude, the 2012 San Pedro de Yacochuya showed some restraint despite its 15,7% alcohol. The élevage lasted one year and it was in 50/50 new and used French oak barriques. But the fruit must have been so powerful that the oak is not perceptible on the nose, and it just contributed to the slow oxygenation of the wine. It has character and good complexity with a mixture of perfumed and soil-driven aromas that are quite serious and elegant. The medium to full-bodied palate is where the fruit also rules with dense, mouthfilling flavors and sweet tannins energized by good acidity. It has concentration and power both in good balance. Utterly impressive! 56,000 bottles produced." The Wine Advocate

Bodega Rolland Mariflor Malbec 2012
Price: $27.00    Your Price: $23.76

Bodega Rolland Mariflor Pinot Noir
Price: $30.00    Your Price: $26.40

Despite its compact dark purple grapes, Pinot juice is colourless; this explains that, once vinified with a specific method, this same juice is used to make Champagne. As A. Tchelistcheff said: “Chardonnay is a red wine disguised as a white, Pinot Noir is a white wine disguised as a red”.

MARIFLOR PINOT, it’s silky elegance with a nose of ripe raspberries and wild berries… well-balanced between sweetness and structure that can be appreciated young and age with harmony.

Bodega Rolland Mariflor Sauvignon Blanc
Price: $27.00    Your Price: $23.76

The first vintages of “Mariflor sauvignon blanc” were very appreciated as much as by the Argentinean market, not familiar with this grape variety, as by export…and Jay Miller (Wine Advocate) wrote in August 2009, regarding the 2008 vintage:  “Lovely perfume of grapefruit, lemon-lime, and fresh herbs. On the palate mineral notes emerge to add complexity to this rich, mouth-filling Sauvignon. It has exceptional volume, savory flavors, and a lengthy, pure finish.
