Episode 52: Côtes du Rhône Villages. A Trade Secret.

Think about those grand Châteauneuf du Pape reds from the southern Rhône. Before the discovery of Australian shiraz in the 80s and 90s, this is all that cool people drank, during the winter months anyway. Sadly, with an ever-burgeoning fan base, Châteauneuf du Pape prices are going through the roof, even for fairly indifferent examples. The true bargains of the Southern Rhône are in the villages just next door. Gigondas and Vacqueyras used to be labelled as humble Côtes du Rhône Villages, but were promoted to greatness alongside Chateauneuf du Pape. Judging by the quality of these fantastic wines, I thinks it's time for another squad rotation! Brilliant wines under £20, even £15 are plentiful here.
