2015 Ellman Family Vineyards Pinot Noir Alexis Skye Sonoma Coast

2015 Ellman Family Vineyards Pinot Noir Alexis Skye Sonoma Coast image

While 2015 was the most intense period of drought in California history, this was good news for wine quality. Vines struggled, and produced a limited crop—with small berries and vibrant acidity—throughout Napa and Sonoma. The resulting wines are dark, highly aromatic, and varietally pure. The perfume and delicacy of Pinot Noir in Sonoma were certainly elevated in this unique vintage. 36% Catie’s Corner, in the coveted Vine Hill area of Russian River Valley, and 64% Sangiacomo’s Roberts Road Vineyard, in the rolling hills of the Sonoma Coast northeast of Petaluma. The combination brings out the best that Pinot Noir can deliver in this region that is so well suited to the variety. Aromas of rose petals, fresh red raspberries, and thyme immediately rise up when the wine is poured. These characters follow through on the palate, with a crescendo building to flavors reminiscent of ripe strawberries, balsamic, and black pepper. Extended aging in French oak barrels helps to round out the texture of this generous wine, and add to the richness and length on the finish. 275 cases produced
