2011 Pelissero Barbera d Alba Piani 3 Liter image

The name Piani identifies a relatively flat area that can occasionally be seen between the steep hills of Langa. The area is in the Township of Treiso and is turned towards Neive. When identifying the varied morphological composition of the Barbaresco area, it is usual to underline the predominance of limestone in the soil, suitable always for the production of great red wines that are elegant and refined. The Barbera is a variety rich in color, but, in comparison to Nebbiolo, low in tannins. The soil of the Piani sub zone is characterized by a slightly superior percentage of clay than average and this allows the Barbera to maintain the elegance and finesse typical of the wines of Langa, with a light tannic component that gives higher savour and complexity to the wine. Between the rockier and the more crumbly and superficial portions, there is a particular substrate which forms a type of expansion membrane similar to bentonite, which in case of persistent torrential rains tends to swell causing surface landslides such that the entire hill slides downhill. Through the years these landslides have leveled the hill making it less steep than others, hence the name Piani.
