2014 Canvasback Cabernet Sauvignon Red Mountain

2014 Canvasback Cabernet Sauvignon Red Mountain image

Dick Boushey is the vineyard manager, Brian Rudin is the winemaker and this is the latest thing from the folks at Duckhorn.  They planted 18 acres recently so the estate is not ready they are buying fruit from four vineyards right now until the young vines are ready.  This vintage is a blend of Merlot and Malbec, this wine sees 16 months in 100% French oak, a mixture of new  and older neutral oak.  On the nose there is good hand of that dirt from this region with red and black currant, dark plum and black cherry fruit, herbs, asian spices, black licorice and more, very complex bouquet of aromas. Plump and juicy fruit here on the tongue this is a warmer year in Washington but has that hallmark freshness of wines from this area also with a good hand of spice and a lot of that red mountain earth through the finish, tobacco, licorice like notes through the finish, a ripe vintage that is still very young but has lovely balance. Finish 45+    Excellent +
