2012 Freemark Abbey Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon image

Composition 83.2% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8.3% Merlot, 4.6% Petit Verdot, 3.9% Cabernet Franc WINEPROFILE With great complexity, the Rutherford CS expresses aromas of black fruit, Bing cherry, dark chocolate, red raspberry, green olive, tobacco, all integrated with the spicy sweetness of oak, cedar, cinnamon, clove and a hint of black pepper. The body is very full with a soft entry, coupled with dark cherry/berry flavors that develop with great depth. PRIMARYVINEYARDS - Bosché Vineyard--Rutherford (53%) Located west of Hwy. 29, on the famed Rutherford Bench, the Bosché vineyard has very deep gravelly soils. A seasonal creek crosses the vineyard which causes the water table to be high in the spring, providing water and nutrients for new shoot growth. As veraison approaches the water table drops, stressing the wines and intensifying the dark velvety fruit flavors. Sycamore--Rutherford (42%) Located about 1.2 miles south of Bosché, right up against the Mayacamas Range, this vineyard has a rich clay loam. Sycamore Vineyard produces small berries reminiscent of mountain fruit berries, with intense extract of color and flavor of black currant and black berry with a forest floor complexity. Red Barn Ranch--Rutherford (5 %) Located in the heart of the Rutherford appellation, this vineyard is a mosaic of creek beds. The Napa River and Conn Creek have traversed through this vineyard in history past, leaving gravely loams and ancient creek beds. The fruit is soft, with cherry, plum, rhubarb and arugula. GROWING SEASON NOTES This growing season was ideal and some would venture to say....”perfect”. With textbook conditions for spring bud break, the vines continued steady growth over the spring, flowering and fruit set. Classic weather promoted a very even set of fruit that was abundant but not over cropped. The long summer days brought a normal veraison, initiating the long ripening period that achieved our goals before the fall rains. Harvest was a winemaker’s dream...
