2009 Dalla Valle Maya Proprietary Red Napa

(98+ Points) The 2009 Maya (67% Cabernet Sauvignon and 33% Cabernet Franc) has opened-up considerably and is much more showy than I would have expected. It exhibits notes of sweet creme de cassis, camphor, bouquet garni, spice box and a hint of road tar. Full-bodied with remarkable density as well as a multidimensional personality, and abundant, well-integrated tannins, this 2009 can be approached now, but it should be even better in 5-7 years. It should last for three decades or more.

Following a significant replanting, Dalle Valle appears to have come back with an impressive group of wines. The proprietary red wine named after proprietress Naoko Dalla Valle’s daughter, Maya, used to be blended with 50-55% Cabernet Franc, but it is only about one-third of the blend over recent vintages.. One of the original cult wines of California, this brilliant wine has had enormous success since the mid- and late 1980s. The 2012s are typical for the vintage with lots of fruit, body and precocious, seductive personalities.  Wine Advocate #209
