“Every day I spend my time
Drinking wine, feeling fine
Waiting here to find the sign
That I can understand, yes I am”
-Everyday by A$AP Rocky ft. Mark Ronson, Miguel & Rod Stewart
Generalizations are dangerous when it comes to Pinot Noir but with that said it is one of the most affected by the dirt the vines come out of. Willamette Valley Wines tend to have the bright fruit of the new world with structure and earthiness found in Burgundy. Every region has vintage variation, Oregon’s are more pronounced than most. The wines of the Willamette Valley are distinctive with small producers being the norm along with a bevy of microclimates, it is fascinating how individual wineries portray each vintage here.
California tends to be on the fruit forward end of the spectrum. Whether it’s the bright red cherries and spiciness from Santa Lucia Highlands, or the deeper red fruits from Russian River, Pinot from California offers immediate pleasure drinking but there are always exceptions to the rules.
Burgundy tends to have more earthy character to the wines but that has changed a bit with global warming and to really understand the subtle nuances that the dirt makes you should taste the wines under blind conditions and that is the point of this event where we will be showing some top level Pinot Noir from around the world blind.
We have premier and grand cru Burgundy on the table tonight, top level Oregon Pinot Noir, great California Pinot Noir as well as a few ringers from Alsace, New Zealand and more. Join us for this blind tasting of great Pinot Noir from around the world and see if you can tell the difference the dirt makes with this varietal. We have the list of wines below but on the night of the tasting you will not know what order they are poured in until after our tasting group chooses their favorites wines.
This is an exercise that we do every week at Wine Watch on Saturday afternoon but this time we have a theme and a glass for each wine. The fee for this tasting which includes dinner is $145 + tax, for reservations call 954-523-9463 or e-mail andy@winewatch.com.
