This week’s schedule has been condensed because of Irma but don’t let that make you stay in your home sequestered waiting for the inevitable.  Come out and drink with us at the Wine Bar and stock up on supplies as if the Wine Bar is open so is the Wine Watch!  We will be here for our Wine Drinking People through the weekend as weather permits but we will be open Thursday and Friday night with a special menu for Saturday night and as the storm gets closer the bottles get better!!  We have the back-up generator ready gassed up and will turn the Wine Bar into a hurricane shelter if necessary on Saturday night!!

But we are hoping for the best as they say the “the show must go on” so we are planning on being open next week and we have our first annual New Zealand wine tasting.  Every year we try to take the family someplace new in the wine world and last summer was New Zealand.  I have included some notes and pictures from our trip at the end of this e-mail.

New Zealand has taken the wine world by storm with their redefining style of the Sauvignon Blanc grape.  They make a fresh and fruity week that is so appealing you can drink it like soda pop at the pool in the afternoon.  But besides this fun and whimsical wine they also have some great Pinot Noir as well as a few areas that can produce world class Syrah and Bordeaux varietals.

This is a walk around tasting and is limited to 35 tasters.  The fee for this event is $45 + tax for reservations call 954-523-9463 or e-mail andy@winewatch.com.

2016 Jules Taylor Pinot Gris Marlborough
Price: $18.75       Sale $16.50          Case $192

For Jules it’s a grape where you can use different techniques and methods each year, evolving the techniques and trying something a little different. The pleasure is in the not knowing what each vintage is going to bring.
This is a lovely textural Pinot Gris with lucious pear and stonefruit flavours, layered over subtle creamy and nutty characters derived from the partial wild fermentation and yeast lees ageing. The secondary characters impart a richness and complexity that carries through to a lingering dry finish.

2016 Jules Taylor Sauvignon Blanc Marlborough
Price: $18.75       Sale $16.50          Case $192

This stunningly juicy drop captures the essence of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. The palate embraces concentrated flavours of citrus and passionfruit and carries subtle hints of fresh summer herbs with lemongrass. These flavours linger giving a long well-rounded finish to the wine.

2016 Jules Taylor Sauvignon Blanc OTQ Marlborough
Price: $24.75       Sale $21.78          Case $253

Sometimes you get very special grapes which make very special wines. And sometimes, just sometimes, you don’t tell anybody that you’ve got these special grapes and that you’re going to make a very special wine.
This wine was made on the quiet by Jules, hence the name. She had spotted pockets of fruit in certain vineyards that showed great promise. Combining this with her desire to try something a little different, to challenge the conventional winemaking interpretations of Marlborough’s signature varieties, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir she hid her project in the back of the barrel hall. After quiet months maturing in French oak barrels a very special wine has emerged, as did, after a certain amount of wrestling to the ground, Jules' secret.
We've sealed them in beautiful bespoke bottles decorated with artwork inspired by the flora and fauna found in vineyards around Marlborough to please both the eye and the palate.

These are wines born of an indulgence - but we all need our indulgences.

2015 Jules Taylor Chardonnay Marlborough
Price: $19.50       Sale $17.16          Case $199

The fashion for chardonnay used to be the big, buttery, oaky wine. Do we care for fashion? Pah! This is a wine that is fresh and has great fruit flavours that expresses the vineyard without the winemaker’s boots stamping all over it.
This fragrant chardonnay exhibits stonefruit and butterscotch aromas layered over spicy notes with a hint of smoky oak. The partial wild and malolactic fermentations along with the extended lees maturation in barrel have added complexity and texture to the wine. The palate is smooth and round with lovely balance of minerality and well refined acid.

2014 Jules Taylor Gruner Marlborough
Price: $18.75       Sale $16.50          Case $192

The best way to describe Grüner Veltliner is that it’s a cool climate wine somewhere between an aromatic white and a chardonnay. One of the reasons that we’re making it is to stretch our wings, to see if there is life after Sauvignon Blanc. The initial results suggest that there might be.
This wine is Marlborough's unique expression of the old world classic. Light yellow in colour, it's delicately perfumed with green apple, white fleshed nectarine, orange blossom notes and hints of spice. The palate is soft & elegant with flavours of stonefruit and just the right amount of peppery spice.
The fruit for this wine was hand harvested from one small vineyard in Marlborough, then whipped in to the winery, lightly pressed and cold settled over 48 hours to remove any solids before fermenting with selected yeast strains. The fermentation was kept cool and long to retain the vibrant aromatics. Afterwards I have gently clarified, stabilised and bottled the wine with a screw cap closure to retain freshness.

Price: $32.50       Sale $28.60          Case $332

2015 Jules Taylor Late Harvest Marlborough (375ml)
Price: $18.75       Sale $16.50          Case $192

Delicate aromas of ripe stone fruits, honeysuckle and spiced orange. The palate is decadently sweet with concentrated flavours of mandarin, ripe nectarine and honey with hints of cloves. A soft line of acidity from its Sauvignon Blanc heritage cuts through the sweetness to balance the rich flavours to perfection. Luscious!

Oyster Bay Marlborough Chardonnay truly captures the character of Marlborough with pure, incisive, ripe fruit flavors. A combination of barrel and tank fermentation and the stirring of yeast lees achieves maximum softness, integration and texture.
