I love scotch. Scotchy, scotch, scotch. Here it goes down, down into my belly...

Ron Burgundy

09182015-Louis-Jadot-Tasting-at-Wine-Watch.jpg

I have learned to like Scotch also and the first thing that I do when I go on vacation is buy a bottle of really good scotch and I start out the evening every night with a glass to warm up the liver for the wine.

But vacations are done for this year and it is time to get to work with some serious wine tastings and some of the first serious Burgundy tastings that I attended were with the Mason Louis Jadot.  For many years either Jacques Lardière or Pierre-Henry Gagey would come to the South Florida to show a cross section of the newest releases from this great house.  They put over 40 different wines on the table every year and in one day I learned more about burgundy than the rest of the entire year.  This showed me that Burgundy is the ultimate exercise in terroir and how it affects wine.  The same producer, the same varietal and the same vintage- the only thing that is different from one wine to another is the dirt from which they are grown.

I was disappointed but happy to see Jacques with (375ml) bottles 2003 vintage barrel samples in my store in 2004.  I remember it was a difficult year because of the heat and this was also the year that they stopped doing this event in South Florida.  Jacques also indicated that it was a small vintage- thus the (375ml) barrel samples.  I expressed my disappointment that they stopped conducting this barrel tasting here in South Florida and Jacques said he would speak with the folks at Kobrand to see if we could set up an event with our Burgundy drinking people to keep them up to date on the quality of each new vintage in Burgundy with an abbreviated version of this tasting.

Well- ask and you shall receive! We have conducted a Louis Jadot Barrel tasting nearly every year since!!   It looks like both the 2012 and 2013 vintages from Burgundy are Excellent to outstanding in quality although the quantity in some parts of the Cotes d'or was severely diminished.

The 2012 vintage was plagued with every malady that occurs in Burgundy but at the end of the day the grapes that were harvested were of excellent to outstanding quality it is just the quantity that was very short.   This is an excellent vintage from Burgundy with very good structure and balance.  The top wines will need a bit of cellar time as they are well built.  They do not offer the immediate appeal of the 2013 vintage but these wines have wonderful balance.

The 2013 vintage wines from Louis Jadot are about to arrive but we still have some 2012's here so we figured since Olivier is here it would be a good time to see how these 2012 vintage wines are drinking.   Wine Watch Caterings Toni Lampasone will be making a few small courses to accompany the tasting wines.  The fee for this tasting is $85 + tax, for reservations call 954-523-9463.

2010 Domaine Ferret Sous Vergisson
Price: $39.75    Sale $34.98    Case $406

Sous Vergisson is a 7.5-acre parcel, located in the Croux vineyard just below Vergisson Rock. With an excellent south-southeast exposure, 10-35 year old vines are planted in calcareous (limestone) clay soil, which imparts finesse, complexity and volume to the wine. For this classic Pouilly-Fuissé, fermentation takes place half in enameled tanks and half in oak barrels, which add oxygen and complexity. No new oak is used and the barrels are 2-5 years old to ensure as pure an expression of terroir as possible.

With subtle stone fruits, locust tree flowers, fresh hazelnuts and spicy aromas and flavors, the wine’s finish is intense and spicy. Graciously balanced between richness and freshness, the wine shows very harmonious mineral expression. This wine’s balanced freshness and structure allow it to age gracefully but with vibrancy.

2012 Domaine Ferret Les Perrieres
Price: $55.50    Sale $48.84    Case $567

A vineyard of one hectare in size, located on the so-called back side of the rock', les Perrières lies halfway up the slope, just above the les Clos parcel. The slope, which faces south-east, is somewhat steeper than that of les Clos.

An intensely generous nose with creamy honeysuckle aromas. A vivid palate showing a pleasing balance between depth of flavour and richness, and a long finish revealing notes of gingerbread and flowers. Ripeness of fruit gives the wine incredible richness that will become even more explosive as it matures over time.

2012 Louis Jadot Puligny Montrachet “ Clos De La Garrenne”
Price: $102.00    Sale $89.76    Case $1041

(94 points)  Already beautiful, this comes from an estate that’s managed by Louis Jadot in Puligny-Montrachet, always producing fine wines. It’s smooth and toasty, although it is already showing ripe yellow fruits and fragrant acidity. Although drinkable now, it really needs to age, so keep until 2018. (12/2014)  Wine Enthusiast

2012 Louis Jadot Chevallier Montrachet “ les Demoiselles” Grand Cru
Price: $445.00    Sale $391.60    Case $4539

(96 Points)  "The 2012 Chevalier-Montrachet Les Demoiselles Grand Cru has a strict, aristocratic, stony bouquet that is taut and focused - no messing about here. The palate is very intense on the entry with a mineral core wrapped up in precise orange zest and spicy notes that fan out sensually across the slightly saline finish. This is a Chevalier that you have to think about, unfurling in the glass, surely with hidden facets that will be revealed with age. This is a regal grand cru. The Wine Advocate

A bit of history on Louis Jadot:

http://www.winewatch.com/images/image004_0677.jpg

Maison Louis Jadot was founded in 1859 by the man whose name it bears,  Louis Henry Denis Jadot - a young man of Belgian ancestry whose family had settled in Beaune near the turn of the century.  At a young age Louis Henry Jadot developed a deep interest in the wines of Burgundy; and by 1826, his father acquired a parcel in the "Clos des Ursules" vineyard in Beaune, which upon his death he bequeathed to his brother, Louis's uncle.  Under his uncle's auspices, the young Jadot greatly broadened his experience - first in the cellars in the art of evaluating the wines and then in the vineyards in the study of viticulture.  As Louis Henry travelled, he acquired a faithful clientele and in 1859 purchased the respected négociant firm of Lemaire-Fouleux.  He gave the firm his name, restructured its operations, and began to expand its business into the export markets of northern France and Belgium.  Belgium, once a province of the Duchy of Burgundy and historically the preeminent market for its wines, was, as the Jadot family's ancestral home, of particular interest to Louis Henry.  It was there that the Jadot name first began to gain renown.

As Maison Louis Jadot grew, its vineyard holdings expanded through the purchase of parcels in Beaune "Theurons" and "Clos des Couchereaux".  After the death of Louis Henry Jadot, his son, Louis Baptiste Jadot, enthusiastically carried on the work his father had begun.  Louis Baptiste expanded his export markets as well as his clientele in France, reinvesting the profits in the further acquisition of vineyards.  He judiciously made purchases in some of the finest and most famous grand and premier cru vineyards of the Côte d'Or - among them an interest in the coveted Chevalier-Montrachet "Les Demoiselles".  In 1939, Louis Baptiste Jadot died and left control of the firm to his eldest son, Louis Auguste Jadot, who had assisted in the direction of the business under his father since 1931.  Louis Auguste opened and greatly developed the new export market of the United States; he also expanded Jadot's activities in Great Britain, Holland, South America, and New Zealand.

In 1954, Andre Gagey joined Maison Louis Jadot as assistant to Louis Auguste Jadot, and this proved to be an important event in the fortunes of the Jadot firm.  The extremely capable and affable Gagey was appointed interim managing director of the firm in 1962 when Louis Auguste Jadot died, survived by his wife and a seventeen-year-old son, Louis-Alain.  Tragically, Louis-Alain was killed in a car crash at the age of 23 in 1968.  Mademoiselle Jadot then gave Gagey full responsibility for the operations of her firm, which was without heirs to run it.  Gagey placed the policy of maintaining highest quality above all others; and the impeccable reputation for honesty Maison Louis Jadot enjoys today is the reward of that perseverance.  Gagey recently retired and turned the direction of the firm over to his very competent son, Pierre-Henry Gagey.

Maison Louis Jadot's headquarters is located in the heart of Beaune.  The most glorious of its three cellars, used for storage of older vintage wines, is situated in the Convent des Jacobins once a convent of the patron Saint Dominique, founder of the Dominican order and built in 1477.  It was acquired by the Tourliere family in 1802 and has been used by Maison Louis Jadot since 1954.  In contrast, the most recent cellar, on the outskirts of Beaune, doubled production and storage capacity as of mid 1986 and is perhaps the most technologically advanced facility in France.  All white wines are fermented in cask and aged one year; red wines are aged on average eighteen months.  The type of wood used is very carefully selected - Limousin, which imparts aggressive tannins more appropriate to Bordeaux wines, is too harsh for the delicate Burgundies Jadot produces.  Wines are fined "the old way," with natural proteins - skim milk for white wines, egg whites for red wines.  The wines are then hand-racked at five intervals before bottling to assure perfect clarity and brightness.  The Jadot estate today includes ownership of parcels in the vineyards of Chevalier-Montrachet "Les Demoiselles," Corton-Charlemagne, Corton-Pougets, Beaune "Clos des Ursules," Beaune "Theurons", Beaune "Bressandes", Beaune "Boucherottes", Beaune "Clos des Couchereaux, Beaune "Les Chouacheux, and Pernand-Vergelesses "Clos de la Croix de Pierre."  In 1986 Jadot acquired the prestigious Clair-Dau Domaine and in 1987 entered into a contract to produce the wines of the renowned Duc de Magenta.  In 1990 Jadot again expanded its holdings with the purchase of the Domaine Champy in Beaune with its fifteen acres of very valuable vineyards.  In 1994 Jadot purchased another 13.26 acres in prime premier cru vineyards.  Since 1986 Jadot has more than doubled the acreage under its domaine, which together with long term contracts, brings over 160 acres of some of the finest vineyards of the Côte d'Or under Maison Louis Jadot's control.  In February of 1985, the négociant firm of Maison Louis Jadot was purchased by the American-owned Kobrand Corporation, the sole United States importer of Jadot Burgundies since 1945.  This prompted outcries in Burgundy, where it was felt that American ownership would signal the end of an era and that Maison Louis Jadot would never again be the same.  A dozen years hence the French now realize that Kobrand has brought nothing but brilliance and capital to this prestigious firm and that Jadot is producing the best wines in the firm's history.  Since 1970 the winemaker at Maison Louis Jadot has been Jacques Lardière, who is widely regarded as one of the best in Burgundy.  In 1995 he was cited by Robert Parker in The Wine Advocate as one of the top thirteen "Wine Personalities of 1995."  Parker said: "Lardière continues to go from strength to strength producing an enormous range of wines...that are among the finest from Burgundy.  His flexibility and intelligence in handling diverse vintages makes him a winemaker par excellence."  This appears on top of praise previously showered on the firm by Parker in his book titled BURGUNDY.   There Parker rates Maison Jadot between four  and five stars - near the very top of the pyramid of his rating system.  "Most of the red wines from Louis Jadot need 3-4 years in the bottle to round out, but can age for up to 15-20 years, depending on the particular cuvée. The white wines are no less brilliant than the reds."

2009 Louis Jadot Montrachet Grand Cru
Price: $676.75    Your Price: $595.54
Quantity in Stock: 1

(93 + points) The 2009 Montrachet is a wine of contrasts. It is at once delicate yet powerful, and constantly changing in the glass, in the way only the best wines can. This is a cool, precise Montrachet endowed with tons of class and personality. It needs at least a few years to come together, but it is immensely promising. This is a very strong effort from Jadot. Anticipated maturity: 2014+. Jacques Lardiere and Frederic Barnier showed me a wide range of 2009s during my visit in late June, 2011. Many of the jewels among the 2009s are hidden in the villages level wines, which I highly encourage readers to check out. I also tasted a selection of 2008s. The 2008s are quite fat for the year. Yields were lower than in 2009. Lardiere made the decision to age the wines longer on their lees to give them more richness, which he felt was lacking because of the inconsistent, high acid vintage. As a result, these are fairly big 2008s. Wine Advocate #196 Sep 2011

2009 Louis Jadot Gevrey Chambertin
Price: $57.75    Your Price: $50.82
Quantity in Stock: 1

(87-90 Points) "Jacques Lardiere noted that the village of Gevrey-Chambertin has more good vineyards devoted to AC level wines than anywhere else in the Côte d’Or, and in 2009 he has had the good fortune to really find some outstanding grapes with which to work. The result is a stellar villages bottling in ’09, as the wine jumps from the glass in a classy blend of cassis, black cherries, dark chocolate, a touch of grilled meat, smoke and black minerality. On the palate the wine is deep, quite full-bodied, complex and serious, with fine mid-palate depth, ripe tannins, lovely balance and a long, classy finish. A superb village wine. 2014-2030 . 91." John Gilman a View from the Cellar 1/11 "Good deep red. Expressive aromas of dark fruits, coffee and chocolate. Sweet, very ripe and pliant, with enticing inner-mouth aromatic character. Finishes with ripe tannins and lingering sweetness. This will make a good restaurant wine but should also last well. This was my favorite of the Jadot village wines, although the Nuits-Saint-Georges should turn out well, especially if Lardiere declassifies some premier cru juice into it, as he expects to do. .." IWC 1/11

2010 Domaine Louis Jadot Meursault Charmes
Price: $83.25    Your Price: $73.26
Quantity in Stock: 2

(93 Points)  Jadot’s 2010 Meursault Charmes is rich, explosive and powerful. I can see the temptation to drink the Charmes early as it is quite expressive, but the wine really needs time to settle down. Endless layers of fruit build to the huge, dramatic finish. This is a decidedly large-scaled wine, even within the context of Charmes. Anticipated maturity: 2015+.  eRobertParker.com #202, Aug 2012

(93-95 points) (100% vendage entier; aged in 100% new oak until the first racking and now in 50% new barrels): Good bright dark red. Wonderful mineral tang lifts the complex aromas of raspberry, cherry, pomegranate, coffee, pepper and spices. Fat, sweet and deep, with the piquant minerality and a peppery element giving lift and energy to the middle palate. Notes of candied strawberry and raspberry are complicated by saline soil tones. Powerfully structured wine with long, bright finishing flavors that saturate the sides of the mouth. (2/2012) Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar

2010 Domaine Louis Jadot Chapelle Chambertin Grand Cru
Price: $201.75     Your Price: $177.54
Quantity in Stock: 2

(94-96 points) The 2010 Chapelle-Chambertin is dark and brooding. Cool, mineral notes lead to slate, black cherries, tar and licorice. This is a decidedly muscular, intense Burgundy with tons of density and power enshrouded by statuesque tannins. The sheer power and intensity suggest the Chapelle will require considerable patience. This big, dramatic wine is built for the cellar, but it is without question a showstopper, even today. (2/2012) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

2011 Domaine Louis Jadot Musigny Grand Cru
Price: $558.00    Your Price: $491.04
Quantity in Stock: 4

The grand Cru of Musigny is oriented to the East ; its subsoil is composed with limestone and al great deal of stones, allowing the wine to be very supple.  The altitude of the village is 320 meters.  The Musigny is a very elegant and refined wine with a deep colour but not too much. It is at the same time elegant and well structured.

2012 Louis Jadot Pernand-Vergelesses Les Combottes
Price: $41.50    Your Price: $36.52
Quantity in Stock: 19

The vineyard is located rather high on the hill of Pernand-Vergelesses, not far from the Hautes Côtes de Beaune Appellation.  The soil is mainly composed of brown-yellow marls and clay dating back to the young Jurassic period (about 150 million years). The surface is very rich in oxide, mainly iron explaining the brown colour.

Very fresh in the nose with citrus aromas some white flesh fruits but also some hawthorn aromas.  Very mineral.  Very soft in the mouth, very complex (hazelnut and lemon). This wine is very  straight forward.

(97-99 points) The 2012 Musigny Grand Cru is utterly beguiling on the nose: beautifully composed and refined with scents of blackberry and boysenberry fruit, forest floor and pressed flowers. The palate is supremely well balanced with perfect acidity slicing through the sophisticated dark berry fruit interlaced with spice and minerals. There is an effortless quality here that is totally captivating and it probably represents the apogee of Louis Jadot’s mammoth portfolio this year. (12/ 2013) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Beaujolais  - The bastard step child of Burgundy

2010 Louis Jadot Moulin A Vent Chateau des Jacques Clos De Roche
Price: $34.50    Your Price: $30.36
Quantity in Stock: 5

(90-91 points)  A 2010 Moulin-a-Vent Clos de Rochegres originates in the high-elevation site that is by de Castelnau’s account farthest advanced in Chateau des Jacques’s conversion to biodynamic farming, thanks he says to the diligent collaboration of those participating vignerons who are responsible for day-to-day work in these particular vines. Decidedly the most carnal wine in its collection, this emphasizes both smoked and fresh red meats and displays a sappy sense of extract-richness even though tart black fruits are not to the fore. Saliva-inducing salinity, tincture of iodine, and what I can only describe - even if this is merely from power-of-suggestion - as iron filings introduce dynamic and depth to a sustained finish. This finely-tannic, energetic though hardly effusive Moulin-a-Vent should benefit from a couple of years in bottle and merit attention for six or more. (8/2011) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
