“I would like a wine. The purpose of the wine is to get me drunk. A bad wine will get me as drunk as a good wine. I would like the good wine. And since the result is the same no matter which wine I drink, I’d like to pay the bad wine price.”

Steve Martin -  Comedian, writer, actor, banjo player

Those of you that know me know my intentions are good and I am truly out to drink as many of the world's great wines while I'm here as I can.  And I look forward to every chance I get to host an event with our good friend Proal Perry.  I was one of his first customers when he founded Augustan Wine Imports over 20 years ago and I am one of his first customers again with his new Progress Wine Group.

Although I'm not familiar with many of these producers after knowing Proal for this long I know there are going to be some shockingly good wines on the table this evening.  I love Domenico Clerico and there are a lot of cool wines here in this line-up from the Alto Piedmont, in other words lots of Nebbiolo!

We have a total of twelve wines that we will be showcasing at this tasting and chef Toni Lampasone will be making a special meal to accompany the tasting wines.  The fee for this tasting which includes dinner is $95 + tax, for reservations call 954-523-9463 or e-mail andy@winewatch.com.

Le Colture Prosecco di Valdobbiadene Superiore Rive Di Santo Stefano Gerardo Brut (NV)
Price: $21.75       Sale $19.14

This Brut is the fruit of the oldest vineyards (35-40 years old) in Santo Stefano. We dedicated it to our grandfather Gerardo Ruggeri as a tribute to the passionate commitment with which he tended his 'Rive', the vineyards cultivated on the very steepest slopes. It offers pronounced fragrances of citrus and fresh garden vegetables, often alongside notes of fresh-baked bread, then a vibrant crispness in the mouth. The delicate bead of pin-point bubbles animates a lengthy progression and ensures a notably clean palate

2016 Terre del Faet Collio Friulano
Price: $30.75       Sale $27.06

Light gold with flecks of green. Medium body with notes of chamomile, citrus, sage and almond. There is also a streak of earthiness that shows up. A classic Friulano that clocks in at an infinitely drinkable 12.8% alcohol (avoiding that heady character that some Friulano can take on) and will provide great drinking over the next three to five years.

Image result for 2015 Benanti Etna Rosso

2015 Benanti Etna Rosso
Price: $35.50       Sale $31.24

The 2015 Etna Rosso is a traditional blend of 80% Nerello Mascalese and 20% Nerello Cappuccio. Thanks to this blend, the color intensity of the wine shows a deeper ruby color. This is a streamlined and elegant wine with wild berry aromas, anise seed, dark mineral and crushed flint. The finish is slightly salty and the tannins are snappy and firm. Fruit is sourced from three sides of the volcano (the northern, southeast and southwest slopes) from parcels that range from 450 to 900 meters above sea level. 2013 Caprili Brunello di Montalcino
Price: $55.00       Sale $48.40

(93 points) Bright red with a pale rim. Blackberry, earthy spices, mint, minerals, game and violet on the very deep but still youthfully reticent nose. Dense, energetic, large-scale and brooding on the palate, offering floral flavors of red and dark berries and underbrush. Finishes extremely long, scented and subtle, featuring very suave tannins. Cellar this beauty for at least another five years, as it will likely blossom into something special; the plus sign on my score indicates that I would not be surprised to find myself scoring this 95 or 96 in the years ahead. Image result for 2014 Meridio Terre Siciliane Arundo

2014 Meridio Terre Siciliane Arundo
Price: $46.50       Sale $40.92

Meridio is a a tiny vineyard near Chiaramonte Gulfi which is still cultivated based on a traditional practice. We call Meridio the vineyard with canes as only natural products are allowed inside the vineyard. The sapling leans on the cane which are tied with the "liama" (a local weed).  Only natural fertilizer like copper and sulfur are used while all the processing is hand driven.  Arundo after various experiments has returned to the origins as Alicante in purity. A natural wine combining an aromatic complexity as well as a persistence in taste and a unique elegance.  Arundo is a full-bodied red made from Alicante grapes. A natural wine with an aromatic complexity and a unique taste persistence.

2013 Roccolo Grassi Valpolicella Superiore Roccolo Grassi
Price: $40.50       Sale $35.64

Roccolo Grassi Valpolicella Superiore is made from a combination of fresh grapes and slightly dried grapes in equal percentage. The slight dehydration of the grapes lasts 20 days (percentage amount of grapes and number of days may vary depending on the vintage) in order to alter the peel/pulp ratio and therefore obtain a fresh fruit with a slightly higher concentration and rich with the noble components of the peel. This is followed by a 20-month aging in wood , assembling and bottling.

A section of the vineyard is designated exclusively to growing grapes for Valpollicella Superiore. Grapes for Amarone are not selected from this area. This allows for better concentration , as well as exceptional complexity and finesse of aroma.

Image result for 2014 Dirupi Valtellina Superiore Vigna Riserva

2014 Dirupi Valtellina Superiore Vigna Riserva
Price: $79.50       Sale $69.96

The Valtellina Superiore Riserva by Dirupi is a beautiful expression of Nebbiolo Chiavennasca that comes from non-dried grapes, aged in a single wooden cask for 18 months, giving it a full-bodied and intense sip, with a very juicy and fresh bouquet that alternates red fruit notes with a finish of spice and violet. On the palate it shows warm, powerful and harmonious, with a final beautiful freshness and persistence

Image result for 2012 Davide Carlone Boca

2012 Davide Carlone Boca
Price: $42.50       Sale $37.40

In his late teens, Davide Carlone (born 1968) worked a 1ha, old-vine Boca vineyard that was one of only three hectares still in existence. In this tiny appellation that once flourished, little remains of the once prolific vineyards that thrived pre-phylloxera. To understand how the landscape of Boca and neighboring Lessona, Gheme and Gattinara appeared in that era, simply replace these now mostly wooded hills with the vast vineyard extensions of the Langhe today. In fact, in that era the tables of Nebbiolo production were reversed with Upper Piedmont as the epicenter.

Crafting natural wines, Carlone has been the guiding light of Boca, offering advice and growing for others while the appellation slowly gained traction. Today, he keeps a bit more of his grapes and finished wines for himself. The Croatina spends a year in cask and the Boca nearly four, with minimal racking. Both Croatina and Nebbiolo are utterly unique expressions when grown in Boca, in part because the soils and bedrock are primarily volcanic porphyry, which is an appellation specific trait because the hills of Boca are the remnant of a once active volcano.

Image result for 2013 Domenico Clerico Barolo

2013 Domenico Clerico Barolo
Price: $64.25       Sale $56.54

(93 Points) Exuberant and exciting, the 2013 Barolo is a fantastic new edition to the Domenico Clerico family. This wine was first introduced in 2011. Before then, the estate only made cru expressions. Here's how it works. The single-vineyard wines are vinified separately of course. The winemaking team tastes through all the barrels to eliminate the ones that don't fit the taste profiles (or quality standards) of their respective cru site. Those barrels are then blended to make this wine. What you get is a hodge-podge of the best of Clerico. The effect works wonders. There is so much intensity and fruity succulence to behold. The wine is rich and beautifully smooth in texture.  Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Image result for 2012 Domenico Clerico Barolo Ciabot Mentin

2012 Domenico Clerico Barolo Ciabot Mentin
Price: $93.00       Sale $81.84

(95 Points) Ciabot Mentin and Pajana are both single vineyards. Because they are solely farmed by this estate, these names have been registered in copyright as fantasy brands that no one else can use. Domenico Clerico's 2012 Barolo Ciabot Mentin is a beautifully meaty and succulent wine. It opens to an enriched and dark appearance with beautiful garnet and ruby highlights. The bouquet sports wide shoulders with dark fruit, spice, tar and toasted hazelnut. In the mouth, it shows depth, succulence and power.  Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Menu

Charcuterie and Cheese Selection
Mushroom and Heirloom tomato tartar with Balsamic drizzle and basil foam
Pork loin wrapped in pancetta stuffed with fontina truffle cheese and fresh herbs served over Nebbiolo natural sauce and root vegetable risotto
