Chateau D’Esclans, Provence: (Sylvia Cornelius)

Chateau d’Esclans is located on an exceptional site, on elevated land near the Gorges de Pennafort, twenty five kilometers northwest of the ancient Roman city of Frejus on the Mediterranean coast. The first traces of the chateau’s site date back to Gaullist times during which its location served as a lookout point to spot intruders coming by boat into the Gulf of Frejus. The chateau’s cellar structure or foundation (known today as the oldest in the region) housed an original Chateau that was given by the Comte de Provence to Gérard De Villeneuve, in 1201. The current chateau, inspired by Tuscan Villa design, was built during the mid 19th century.

Château d’Esclans lies in the center of the Department of the Var, where the majority of Provence AOC rosé is produced. The land was occupied as long as 2500 years ago when it was probably used as a lookout point for intruders sailing into the Gulf of Frejus. The original château—of which now only the cellar remains—dates back to before the 12th century.

Sacha Lichine aquired Château d’Esclans in 2006.   Today there are 108 acres (44 ha) of vineyards. The total property has 659 acres (267 ha).   The primary grape grown on the property is Grenache followed by Vermentino. Other grapes include Cinsault, Merlot, Mouvèrdre, Syrah, and Tibouren.   The château is known for its old Grenache vines which produce grapes that offer greater concentration of flavor than do the younger vines. As the elevation to where the lots are situated increases, so do the age of the vines. At the highest elevated lot vines are as old as 90 years.

Chateau D’Esclans Rock Angel Rose 2017
Price: $32.25       Sale $28.387

How does a rosé elude boundaries between being a superb aperitif rosé and a fine wine that enjoys the versatility of being successfully paired with a broad range of fine cuisine? Château d’esclans Rock Angel… the highly eligible wine, if you serve it they will come.

Chateau D’Esclans Garrus Rose 2016
Price: $108.00    Sale $95.04

(93 Points) The 70% Grenache for the 2017 Cotes de Provence Rose Garrus comes from the estate's oldest vines. It's barrel fermented with 30% Vermentino, resulting in a toasty, honeyed wine reminiscent of pink grapefruit. It's medium to full-bodied, round and ripe feeling, then finishes long, with echoes of pencil shavings, citrus and melon. It's a paradigm-shifting rosé, but one that resembles an excellent barrel-fermented white wine as much as anything else. I tasted a 2014 at the estate, which left me unconvinced about the cuvée's aging potential.  Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Chateau Carbonnieux Blanc Bordeaux 2014
Price: $45.00       Sale $39.60
(92 Points) The 2014 Carbonnieux Blanc has a detailed and vivacious bouquet offering attractive blackcurrant leaf and citrus aromas, hints of almond and white chocolate just tucked in nicely below the surface. The palate is well balanced with a slice of bitter lemon on the entry. This is a little more piercing in the mouth compared to its peers, as such, it would shine when partnered with shellfish or even hard cheese, rather than a white Pessac-Léognan to serve on its own. Still, a great job here this year.  Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Masut Vineyard CA: (Jake Fetzer- Proprietor)

Founders Ben and Jake Fetzer launched Masút Vineyard & Winery with a focus to produce estate Pinot Noir. The brothers are the grandsons of Barney Fetzer, who built Fetzer vineyards with his family. In the early 1990s, their father, Robert Fetzer, was eager to begin a new chapter. He purchased a 1,200-acre property, which he named Masút, a Native American word meaning “dark, rich earth.” They began to plant Pinot Noir in this untapped mountainous area. Their efforts eventually established the Eagle Peak appellation in Mendocino County, where they are the sole winery. The vineyard (35 acres of Pinot Noir and 1 acre of Chardonnay) straddles the western mountains at the headwaters of the Russian River.

Masut Pinot Noir Eagle Peak Mendocino 2015
Price: $37.50       Sale $33.00

(92 Points) Pure and rich, well-centered on a harmonious core of plum, blackberry and olallieberry, ending with a strong aftertaste that echoes the core flavor themes. Drink now through 2025. Wine Spectator

Masut Chardonnay Eagle Peak Mendocino 2017
Price: $27.00       Sale $23.76

Planted in 2014, the Chardonnay blocks are dry farmed at 1500 feet elevation and made up of two unique clones, Dijon 96 and Wente. The grapes were whole cluster pressed to neutral French oak barrel for fermentation. Periodic stirring of the lees was done for texture and richness. The wine retains good acidity because of a partial malolactic fermentation. We hope you enjoy our first Estate Chardonnay.

Chateau Bligny Cotes de Bars/Aube Champagne ( Jean-Remy Rapineau-Proprietor)

This magnificent property overlooks the village and was built on the foundations of the feudal castle by the Marquis de Dampierre, a French peer who had bought the estate in 1773 in order to hunt wolves. The tower and wing were added in the 19th Century.

Solidly built of dressed stone and firmly sited at the base of a mound, the Château overlooks the village and the valley of the Landion, the source of which is situated under the Château cellars and still supplies it with water today. The main door of the Château comes from the former feudal castle demolished in 1770 and is in the Louis XIII style with its fine sculptural decorations of grapes and vine branches.

Vines have been grown on the slopes of Bligny for many centuries. The Marquis de Dampierre, who owned the Bligny glassworks, lived in the château in the heart of the village. He also owned the surrounding hillsides. The vineyards provided for his personal wine consumption, and the wine was mostly still.

In 1871, the Marquis de Dampierre lost his son, killed at the front. Contrary to certain draft schemes, the railway did not come through Bligny: it was routed instead through Bar-sur-Aube. The glassworks was therefore moved to Bar. Phylloxera sounded the death knell of the Bligny vineyards.

Its reconstruction began in the early 19th Century when the château was passed on to Baron de Cachard. Louis XVIII had made him a noble and given him the title of Baron. Baron de Cachard gave the estate a new lease of life as a wine-producing establishment: he decided to plant a large vineyard, which earned him the nickname of “Gentleman Wine-maker”. Baron de Cachard had been aware of the former excellent reputation of the wines in the region. He had also bought the vineyards of the former Sainte Eulalie Priory, founded in the village in around 1000. The vineyards that he planted and bought now form the Château de Bligny estate.

In 1930 the vineyards covered forty-four hectares. After the war, the estate was bought by a gentleman from Tours, Mr. Lefèvre, who wanted to add a champagne to his range of sparkling wines. His plans did not come to fruition and the property was divided up. In 1952, the Lorin family bought the vineyards in several lots and replanted in 1954.

Marques de Riscal Gran Reserva Rioja 2005
Price: $45.00       Sale $39.60

A very dark black-cherry color with faint brick-red glints. It has an intense, complex nose with hints of black pepper, balsamic aromas, and slight toastiness, reminding you of fine oak. On the palate, the aging nuances are in perfect harmony with the fruit, with good tannin concentration, round and supple, with a long, silky smooth finish.

Marques de Riscal Baron de Chirel Rioja 2010
Price: $81.00       Sale $71.28
(93 Points) Neal Martin reviewed the 2010 Barón de Chirel Reserva before bottling in May 2012, and now all the good things he saw in that sample are confirmed by the bottled version. The nose offers a clear Bordeaux profile that is quite classical with cedar wood, lead pencil, tea leaves, leather and cherry aromas. On the palate the fine-grained, sophisticated tannins of the Cabernet are very well integrated with the oak and are countered by good freshness and length in a very classical harmonious style. This is a great showing for Chirel. Approximately 30% of the grapes used were Cabernet Sauvignon.  Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
