Pio Cesare Wine Dinner at Scarpetta with special guest Pio Bofa

This Event has been read: 1360 times.

Established in 1881, Pio Cesare, now run by fifth generation Pio Boffa, was one of the very first  producers to believe in the potential and quality of the great wines of Piemonte and to export to the UK. A ceaseless devotion to the individuality of each of the region’s wines informs Pio’s  choices in the vineyards and cellar. He applies a ‘minimal intervention’ philosophy to wine making, creating wines that year after year, are ranked among the world’s best wines.

The grapes for this wine come exclusively from family-owned vineyards; ‘Il Bricco’ in Treiso, Barbaresco, ‘Colombaro’ in Serralunga d’Alba and ‘Bossania’ in Trezzo Tinella.

The Barbera grapes grown in the Barolo area give full structure, plummy and complex flavor, with spicy and ripe fruit, blackberry aroma and a hint of toasted tobacco. It ages quite well. This classic Barbera has a very well balanced acidity, vinous - it really represents the traditional character of the Barbera grape.

Pio Cesare Barbaresco 2011
Price: $67.50 Sale $59.40    Case $689

(94 Points)  "Pio Cesare's 2011 Barbaresco is gorgeous. The super-classic bouquet laced with sweet red cherry, orange peel, mint, spice and white pepper is enticing. Generous and layered on the palate, the Barbaresco captures plenty of the warm resonance that is so typical of the year. The 2011 is a blend of fruit from several sites in and around Treiso mostly done in cask. It is the more traditional of the estate's two Barbarescos and also less expensive than the flagship Il Bricco, but here I find more personality, charm and tons of the allure that makes Barbaresco so compelling. The 2011 should age gracefully for years based on its depth, but it is absolutely delicious today." Vinous / Antonio Galloni

Pio Cesare Barolo 2011 & 2012
Price: $67.50 Sale $59.40    Case $689

The grapes are sourced from family owned vineyards in Serralunga d'Alba (Ornato), Grinzane Cavour (Gustava), La Morra (Roncaglie) and Barolo -Novello (Ravera). The balance of the grapes comes from other exclusive vineyards owned by growers, who have been providing grapes to the Pio Cesare family for generations. Vinification takes place in stainless steel tanks, with skin contact for about 20 days. The wine is aged in mid-toasted French oak for three years: 70 percent in 20 to 50 hectoliter casks; 30 percent in barriques.

This is a classic Barolo, with excellent structure and harmony, mild tannins and balanced fruit. It is immediately approachable, but it also has a very long ageing potential.
