We don't drink cheap wine or talk to people that do.

Tuscany is one of Italy's leading wine producing regions and is home to some Italy's most popular wines like Brunello di Montalcino and Chianti Classico as well as "Supertuscan" wines like Tignanello, Sassicaia and Ornellaia.

After the success of the last few week's "Happy Hour" tastings, we have decided to carry on this casual event over the fall and this tasting is a belly up to the bar, hang out with your friends.  The food is casual, this is not a sit-down dinner- a true "Happy Hour" style event mix and immingle with our "Wine Drinking People" but with GREAT wines.  Tonight, we have a great selection of Tuscan wines from the Chianti, Montalcino, Montepulciano and of course a few "Super Tuscan" wines to sample.

This tasting starts at 6pm and chef Toni will be making some appetizers to accompany the tasting wines.  The fee for this tasting is $95 + tax, for reservations call 954-523-9463 or e-mail andy@winewatch.com.

HAPPY HOUR WINE TASTING FEATURING THE WINES OF TUSCANY Thursday, October 6, 2022 6:00 PM See the source image 2021 ISTINE TOSCANA ROSATO Price: $23.25       Your Price: $20.46 Most of the Sangiovese grapes for the Istine Rosato come from their Cavarchione Vineyard in Gaiole in Chianti. The grapes were planted between 2009 and 2010. To ensure freshness, Angela Fronti picks the Sangiovese grapes early. The grapes are crushed at the winery and left to macerate for around 6 hours before pressing. The grapes ferment slowly for about 50 days in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. Malolactic fermentation does not occur. The Istine Rosato has aromas of wild strawberries, cherries, and a touch of herbs. The palate is fresh with beautiful red fruit flavors and a mineral backbone. This is a versatile food wine through summer and fall.

2017 CASTELL'IN VILLA CHIANTI CLASSICO Price: $42.00       Your Price: $36.96 (92 Points) The 2017 Chianti Classico will delight Castell'in Villa fans. No, it is not a repeat of the 2016. Let's get that out of the way. Instead, readers will find a silky, wonderfully nuanced Chianti Classico that is ready to charm right out of the gate. All of the estate signatures are present, but the 2017 benefits from a bit more immediacy because of the warm growing season. Sweet red cherry, cedar, tobacco, sage and dried herbs linger nicely. The 2017 is a gorgeous Chianti Classico. Best of all, it will drink well upon release.  Vinous

2019 ISTINE CHIANTI CLASSICO VIGNA CAVARCHIONE Price: $58.50       Your Price: $51.48 (95 points) The 2019 Chianti Classico Vigna Cavarchione is, along with the Riserva, one of the most powerful of the Chianti Classicos in this range. A wine of breadth and dimension, the Cavarchione is driven by bright acids and a whole range of earthy, savory flavors. Game, wild herbs, tobacco, incense and plum all develop in the glass. The tannins need time to soften, naturally, but there is a ton to explore here. Drink: 2027-2044. (Sep 2021)"  Antonio Galloni (Vinous)

2020 CASTELLO DI BOLGHERI VARVARA BOLGHERI Price: $48.75       Sale $42.90 (93 Points) Here's a quality, easy-to-drink blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The 2020 Bolgheri Rosso Varvàra is integrated and smooth with no rough spots. Black fruit, pressed rose, earth and spice are carefully woven together. All elements are in place, and the wine is available at a very attractive price point. Best after 2023.  Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

2017 CASTELLO DI BOLGHERI BOLGHERI Price: $105.00    Your Price: $92.40 (94 Points) I had tasted this wine in a preview capacity one year ago. Now on the market, the Castello di Bolgheri 2017 Bolgheri Superiore hits the nail on the head. This estate is on a slow growth trajectory, showing results that deliver more satisfaction with each year that I taste them. The 2016 vintage stood out as a true beauty, and this 2017 vintage, with 30,000 bottles made, follows closely on its heels. This blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc and 5% Merlot is not too dense or heavy. It can't be faulted for being overripe or too astringent like some of its peers. Instead, the wine shows smooth fruit integration and solid background notes of blackberry, spice and cured tobacco, worthy of a sampler plate of wild boar charcuterie. Nice job. Some 30,000 bottles were made.  Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

2019 CASTELLO DI BOLGHERI VARVARA BOLGHERI MAGNUM Price: $231.00    Your Price: $203.28 Blend: 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc Deep ruby-red. Intense, spicy nose developing wonderful aromas of black berry fruits, leather, and violet. On the savory palate, velvety tannins support blackberry jam, tobacco and star anise. Elegant finish. A very compelling wine.

2013 CAIAROSSA ROSSO DI TOSCANA IGT Price: $78.00       Your Price: $68.64 (94 points) Outer quote mark This is a gorgeous blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Syrah, Sangiovese, Petit Verdot and Alicante. The 2013 Caiarossa struts its stuff with a soft, velvety mouthfeel and beautiful aromatic intensity. This vintage is complete and generous on all fronts. The bouquet opens slowly and seductively with dark fruit and dried cherry. Those primary aromas segue to spice, smoked cedar and bitter chocolate. You don't get a clear sense of any one variety, but this blend of seven grapes offers power, structure, intensity and textural richness nonetheless. (RP) Inner quote mark (11/2017) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

2019 MAZZEI TOSCANA CONCERTO DI FONTERUTOLI Price: $78.00       Your Price: $68.64 (95+ Points) Made with mostly Sangiovese supplemented by the structural heft and texture of Cabernet Sauvignon (that makes up roughly 20% of the blend), this is a profound and important red wine from Tuscany. The Mazzei 2019 Concerto di Fonterutoli is your proverbial steak buddy, or all-round meat wine, with abundant black fruit, spice, tannins and acidity to cut through the fat and the gristle. By a hair, I prefer the depth and intensity of the 2019 vintage compared to the 2018 vintage that I tasted at this same sitting. This wine is slightly more etched and angular, making it a good bet for extra bottle aging. – ML The Wine Advocate

2017 IL PALAZZONE BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO Price: $87.00       Your Price: $76.56 (93 Points) Elegantly structured this lovely red has scents recalling camphor, blue flowers, dark spice and coffee bean. Smooth and savory, the linear palate features juicy Marasca cherry, crushed raspberry and star anise set against taut, polished tannins.  Wine Enthusiast

2020 Tenuta Arceno Chianti Classico Price: $33.75       Sale $29.70 The Jackson family bought this estate 20 years ago and Pierre Sellin makes these wines and this wine is 20% Merlot, a more international style, 3 day cold soak, they do use some 3 year old French barrique, nothing new with the Sangiovese, very fruit driven, Castelnuovo Berardenga this wine has a bit of toasty oak spice to the red berry fruit cherry and wild strawberry with a touch of that fine herb, sage and underbrush. A big and fruity wine on the tongue with a good amount of fruit here while still delivering the earth and herbal component, licorice spice on the finish. Finish 40+ Neighbors are Felsina and Barolio.  Excellent

2016 Tenuta di Arceno Arcanum Price: $82.50       Sale $72.60 A blend of Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon and this is the top wine on the property made from Select blocks. This wine has an amazing nose of dark exotic spices, cigar box spice, violet floral notes and a good hand of blackberry and blueberry fruit very well endowed with bittersweet coco and fresh plowed dark earth. A big and chewy wine on the tongue with layers of dark berry fruit, a firm hand of tannins and acidity but lots of everything else this wine is still a baby but has lovely structure and complexity leading in the a very long and layered finish. Finish 50+ Most Excellent +

2016 Tenuta di Arceno Valadorna Price: $55.50       Sale $48.84 Mostly Merlot with Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot has that classic Tuscan bouquet with dark plum cherry and a good amount of dried herbs, porcini mushrooms.  A big and chewy wine with lots of everything and a long layered finish, all that nuance from the nose lingering through the long layered finish.  Finish 45+  Excellent +

2018 Tenuta Di Arceno Chianti Classico Riserva Strada al Sasso Price: $71.25       Sale $62.70 This is 100% Sangiovese and is a big wine with lots of jammy wild strawberry like fruit with hints of dried flowers and exotic spices.  A big and chewy style lots of ripe rich fruit with a ton of spice and a savory finish, this wine has it all and more just needs a bit of time in the bottle, 3-5 years at least.  Finish 40+

2019 Arcanum Il Fauno Di Arcanum Toscana Price: $43.50       Sale $38.28 A Bordeaux-style blend, il fauno di Arcanum embodies the diversity of the estate, and is sourced primarily from the Di Sotto, La Curva, Colombaio and San Giovanni blocks. Located in the lower southwest section of the estate, in a warmer, exposed subsection that ripens early, the soils possess a significant amount of clay, with good water retention, and produce wines that tend to be more voluptuous and lush.

2020 PODERE POGGIO SCALETTE CHIANTI CLASSICO Price: $19.25       Your Price: $16.94 Bright ruby red in color, a lively bouquet of red fruits and blackberries complement undertones of ripe cherries and pomegranate seeds. On the palate, the wine is fresh and fruit-forward with silky tannins that evolve throughout the finish.

2016 CASTELLO DI BOSSI BERARDO CHIANTI CLASSICO RISERVA Price: $30.50       Your Price: $26.84 Has a good amount of that tuscan terroir, fine herbs sage and dried mushroom on the nose with a history that dates back to 9th century AD. This vintage is very structured producing wine sith tannins, firm acidity and a solid core of fruit, lots of earth and spice through the finish, this is a big wine and even better on the second day, still very fresh with lots of fruit and a long finish. Finish 45+ Excellent +

2019 SELVAPIANA POMINO VILLA PETROGNANO TOSCANA IGT Price: $22.50       Your Price: $19.80 In the hills above the Sieve River valley, where Selvapiana and the rest of Chianti Rùfina are located, is a serene pine forest that holds the secret vineyards of Pomino DOC, owned by just two estates. Thanks to the friendship of Francesco Giuntini with the owner of Villa Petrognano, Cecilia Galeotti Ottieri, Selvapiana has had the opportunity to farm the villa's 13-acre plot for many years. The cool, higher ground here on the border between Tuscany and Emilia Romagna produces cool-climate fruit and delightfully crisp red wines. The Villa Petrognano vineyards are planted with Sangiovese, along with a significant amount of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, which are blended into this modern yet tradition-respecting wine.

2019 CASANOVA DI NERI ROSSO SANT ANTIMO TUSCANY Price: $24.00       Your Price: $21.12 This Rosso from the Sant'Antimo appellation is the winery's entry-level wine, made from 95% Sangiovese Grosso & 5% Colorino.  The Sant'Antimo DOC was created in 1996 in the Montalcino area to give producers more options for their super-Tuscan wines (red wines made from traditional Italian grape varieties as well as international varieties). Until the new DOC, a producer's only option was to label this sort of wine a vino de tavola or table wine.  A good amount of ripe berry and plum like fruit on the nose with aromas of fresh earth, graphite and fine herbs on the nose.  A good amount of red and black berry fruit on the tongue with ripe round tannins and notes of sweet tobacco spice and some tannins here on the finish, a young wine that could use a year or two to round out the endges.  Finish 35+    Excellent

2017 AVIGNONESI VINO NOBILE MONTEPULCIANO DOCG Price: $23.50       Your Price: $20.68 The Avignonesi Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is a selection of Sangiovese from all of our vineyards in Montepulciano, creating a multifaceted wine that is a true expression of the terroir. www.avignonesi.it

2017 VILLA DI CAPEZZANA CARMIGNANO Price: $30.50       Your Price: $26.84 With vintages dating back to 1925 in their cellar, Villa di Capezzana is the flagship wine of the Tenuta di Capezzana estate and representative of Carmignano's greatest quality. Created as one of the very first protected wine-producing regions in Italy, the history of Carmignano dates back to 1716 when Cosimo III de' Medici granted the area special legal protections which prohibited other regions from using the name "Carmignano" for their wines.  Blend: 80% Sangiovese, 20% Cabernet

2018 TUA RITA PERLATO DEL BOSCO Price: $32.50       Your Price: $28.60 Perlato del Bosco is made entirely with Sangiovese from estate vineyards in Suvereto. The grapes are harvested and vinified in stainless steel before being aged for 12 months in a combination of French oak barriques and large barrels. Tasting Notes Concentrated, dense, nearly opaque purple in color, Perlato del Bosco delivers tantalizing aromas of blackberries, black cherries, currants, ripe plums, tea leaves, exotic spices, and leather. Rich and full-bodied on the palate, this wine's enticing fruit flavors are accompanied by notes of anise, violets, and peppery spice, all of which are framed by fine-grained tannins.

2017 ALTESINO BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO Price: $69.00       Your Price: $60.72 (94 Points)  The Altesino 2017 Brunello di Montalcino is ripe and round with lots of pretty textural richness and juicy fruit flavors. These qualities tie in nicely with the character of the vintage that saw long and hot summer days. Dark fruit, plum and blackcurrant pave the way for savory spice, tobacco and limestone. The effect is soothing and rich, and the wine remains perfumed and silky to the end. The tannins are well managed in this hot-vintage wine. Fruit is sourced over 25 hectares of vines with tufo soils and alberese rock. Best after 2024  Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

2019 GRATTAMACCO L'ALBERELLO BOLGHERI Price: $86.00       Your Price: $75.68 L'Alberello (head-pruned) is the way the vineyards are trained. It is a vineyard of 2 hectares trained in the traditional "settonce" formation, such that each vine is equidistant from the others surrounding it. This vineyard features mainly clay and is run according to the criteria of organic farming with a maximum production of 1 kg of grapes per vine. Harvesting and other works on the vines are done manually. The three varieties are harvested together on the same day, creating a blend that spontaneously ferments in small oak truncated cone vats with manual punching down and long maceration with indigenous yeast. This wine is aged for 16 months in oak barriques prior to bottling. Grattamacco Bolgheri Superiore L'Alberello shows a deep purple core with ruby reflections. The wine is generous and silky on the palate with rich aromas and flavors of wild blackberries and plums, black pepper, and balsamic. The structure is defined by dense, yet soft tannins and a mouthwatering acidity that is marked by a sense of saltiness. A long and harmonious finish presupposes a very long life of development.
