And I’m not stopping any time soon either because now we have a comfortable place to drink our wines with our “Wine Drinking People” but we are in the process of moving the store over to our new location so we will only be open on Friday and Saturday night the next two weeks.

This week marked our 35th year at Progresso Plaza (my 20th as the owner) and we will be out as of Monday May 7th at our new address across the street at 837 NE 3rd Avenue.   Come out and celebrate my 20th anniversary as the “Head Bottle Watcher” tomorrow night at our 2015 Alex Gambal Burgundy tasting or Saturday night at the Wine Bar we are open for regular service.

2015 Promo2.jpg

This week we only have one event and there are still a few seats left for our 2015 Alex Gambal tasting on Friday May 4th.  Check out the line-up of wines from the outstanding 2015 vintage from Burgundy including the two grand crus of Charmes Chambertin and Batard Montrachet!

Saturday night this week we are open for regular business and I have included the menu for both Friday and Saturday night at the end of this e-mail.

Next week just one event as we get the new store ready for retail sales.  On Friday May 11th we have a study in Pauillac at the Wine Bar with a few ringers thrown in for good measure.  This tasting will be conducted blind and we will see if our “Wine Drinking People” can pick the outsiders.

One of Bordeaux’s top critics Hugh Johnson has said, "If one had to single out one commune of Bordeaux to head the list, there would be no argument. It would be Pauillac.". Pauillac includes 3 of the 5 premier cru châteaux of Bordeaux: Latour, Lafite Rothschild and Mouton Rothschild. The wines of Pauillac are often considered the quintessence of Bordeaux wines and the longest lived of all.

Join us as we celebrate our 20th anniversary this weekend as we get the new Wine Watch ready for retail action next week.   Toni Lampasone will be making a special meal to accompany the tasting wines.  The fee for this tasting is $195 + tax, for reservations call 954-523-9463 or e-mail andy@winewatch.com.

1982 Chateau Pichon Lalande Pauillac
Price: $750.00    Sale Price: $650.00           Quantity in Stock: 1

(100 Points) One of the monumental wines of the last century is the 1982 Pichon Lalande. Since bottling, it has flirted with perfection, and was a sprinter out of the gate, which gave rise to questions about how quickly it would begin its decline. However, at age 27, it retains all its glossy, rich, flamboyant cassis fruit, chocolaty, berry jam-like notes, and plenty of earthy, foresty flavors. This is a full-bodied, extravagantly rich Pichon Lalande seemingly devoid of acidity and tannin, but the wine is incredibly well-balanced and pure. It is an amazing effort! 1989 Chateau Pichon Baron Pauillac
Price: $285.00    Sale Price: $230.00           Quantity in Stock: 1

(95 Points) Both the 1989 and 1990 vintages exhibit opaque, dense purple colors that suggest massive wines of considerable extraction and richness. The dense, full-bodied 1989 is brilliantly made with huge, smoky, chocolatey, cassis aromas intermingled with scents of toasty oak. Well-layered, with a sweet inner-core of fruit, this awesomely endowed, backward, tannic, prodigious 1989 needs another 5-6 years of cellaring; it should last for three decades or more. It is unquestionably a great Pichon-Longueville-Baron. The Wine Advocate, Issue 109, Feb. 1997

1990 Chateau Baron Pichon Pauillac

(97 points) A remarkable vintage for Pichon Longueville Baron, 1990 is one of this estate’s two or three finest wines made in the last 40 years. Still inky/blue/purple-tinged to the rim, it reveals an extraordinary bouquet of charcoal, incense, creme de cassis, blue and black fruits, and a hint of licorice as well as an impressively long finish. While drinkable, its evolution is extremely slow, and I would not be surprised to see it last another two decades or more. Release price: ($390.00/case) Wine Advocate #183 Jun 2009

1996 Chateau Pichon Comtesse Lallande Pauillac
Price: $350.00    Sale Price: $250.00           Quantity in Stock: 13

(96 Points) The 1996 Pichon-Lalande is just as awesome from bottle as it was from multiple cask tastings. For Pichon-Lalande, the percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon is atypically high. This wine normally contains 35-50% Merlot in the blend, but the 1996 is a blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Petit Verdot. Only 50% of the estate's production made it into the grand vin. The color is a saturated ruby/purple. The nose suggests sweet, nearly overripe Cabernet Sauvignon, with its blueberry/blackberry/cassis scents intermixed with high quality, subtle, toasty new oak. Deep and full-bodied, with fabulous concentration and a sweet, opulent texture, this wine was singing in full harmony when I tasted it in January. Given the wine's abnormally high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon, I would suspect it will close down. It possesses plenty of tannin, but the wine's overwhelming fruit richness dominates its personality. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2025. Wine Advocate # 122, Apr 1999

2000 Chateau Clerc Milon Pauillac (375ml)

Interestingly enough we have two have bottles in this tasting and rumor has it that ½ bottles age quicker than the 750ml bottles so these may be a bit more evolved but another thing to look for in a blind tasting.  Don’t work we have two 375mls of each so there will be plenty of wine to go around.

2000 Chateau Pichon Longueville Baron Pauillac
Price: $250.00    Sale Price: $210.00
Quantity in Stock: 15

(97 points) This is one of the great wines of the vintage, and certainly a candidate for one of the finest wines made at this estate under the management of Christian Seeley and proprietor AXA. Showing incredibly well at two tastings of 2000s, the wine has a dense bluish/purple color and a beautiful nose of incense, melted asphalt, and creme de cassis as well as hints of new saddle leather and licorice. It is superbly concentrated and very pure, with excellent texture and opulence. The acidity seems low, the tannin high but well-integrated. This is a compelling 2000 that is just closing in on its window of maturity and should stay there for at least 20 or more years. Bravo! Wine Advocate #189 Jun 2010

Image result for 2003 Chateau Latour Pauillac (375ml)

2003 Chateau Latour Pauillac (375ml)
Price: $475.00    Sale Price: $395.00
Quantity in Stock: 5

(100 Points)  "Administrator Frederic Engerer says the 2003 is "the sexiest Latour ever made." He also described it as “the 1990 without any brettanomyces.” I loved this wine from the barrel and was fortunate enough to be able to purchase a small quantity, enjoying every bottle I have had. A profound example of Chateau Latour, the full-bodied, opulent 2003 is already performing well at age eleven, which is somewhat atypical. The pH is a relatively high 3.8, which also indicates low acidity. The wine is very ripe, but not over-ripe, offers great freshness, and lots of creme de cassis and camphor as well as hints of blackberries and chocolate. Dense, thick and unctuously textured, this staggering Latour is undeniably the most sumptuous, opulent wine made here since the 1982 or 1961. Drink it over the next two decades. " The Wine Advocate

This is one of my favorite supertuscans and is made from 100% Sangiovese making it distinctly different from the Pauillac wines on the table which are predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon.

2004 Soter Little Creek Napa

This wine is made by our good friend Tony Soter and this is one of the last wines that he made in Napa.  It is mostly Cabernet Franc so it should be easy to pick this wine out from the others – or should it??

Pauillac is on the left bank of the Gironde. St-Julien is to the south. A stream called Ruisseau de Juillac marks part of the boundary between the two communes; other parts are marked by a stone wall and a country lane. To the north, across the Jalle du Breuil, lies St-Estèphe. Pauillac is bounded on the west by the parish of St Sauveur and the Landes forest. All three communes lie within the Haut-Médoc. The town of Pauillac is the largest in the Médoc, with a population of over 5000. Pauillac is somewhat more elevated than the surrounding area, rising to a peak of nearly 30 metres above sea-level in the region of Château Pontet-Canet. The soil is gravelly, as with most of the Haut-Médoc. The forest to the west shelters the vines from the Atlantic winds. Pauillac contains around 1200 hectares of vineyards.

Cabernet Sauvignon is the predominant grape, but it is invariably blended with other grapes. As with all red Bordeaux, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec may also be included in the blend (although wines will not necessarily include all five grapes). Prior to the 19th century, Malbec was predominant.

The style has been described as 'stark'.   The predominant fruit flavor is usually blackcurrant, sometimes veering into plum. Pencil-shavings and cigar-box are also characteristic notes.

Wine from Pauillac may be labelled as Haut-Médoc (usually wine which the château considers inferior to its main offering and wishes to market under a different label).   Similarly, second (or third) wines from the grandes châteaux may be labelled simply as Pauillac.
