I learned early to drink beer, wine and whiskey. And I think I was about 5 when I first chewed tobacco.

Proof that drinking does enhance your athletic performance! We’re training for the wine drinking Olympics here at Wine Watch and rounding all the bases this week we have a workshop on the wines of Alsace, Germany and Austria.
It was just a few short years ago that Germany produced the world’s most expensive wines on Earth. A few world wars and wine consumers taste changing from sweet to dryer wines have put Germany behind the other great European wine countries in popularity for now. But, they still make some of the world’s best wines focusing almost entirely on a single varietal with Riesling making up over 50% of the planted varietals in this country.
Alsace is part of France today but its wines resemble those of Germany more than the rest of France with Riesling and other aromatic whites making up the majority of their production along with a tiny bit of Pinot Noir. The wines of Alsace are varietally labeled and they seem a bit easier to understand than the rest of France which doesn’t usually put the grape varietal even on the label.
Austria is another great source of aromatic whites along with a bit of Pinot Noir as well as a few other unique reds like; Zweigelt, Blaufränkisch, and St. Laurent. This country bottle for bottle produces some of the most expensive wines in the world. If you look at the average cost of a bottle of wine produced in Austria they are second only to the Swiss in highest on average price for a bottle of fermented grape juice.
These tastings at the Cafe Maxx for $35 are the best value of any event that we do. You get to try 8 different wines at the same time, pre-poured so they have a chance to open up and so you can go back through the line-up to get a second and third look at everything. This is how you learn about wine and with master chef Oliver Saucy sending out a few small courses to accompany the wines; you get a taste of Cafe Maxx and an education in wine all at the same time, a great way to spend happy hour! This is a pre-poured sit down tasting and is limited to 25 tasters, the fee for this tasting is $35 + gratuity + tax for reservations call 954-782-0606.

Paul Blanck Riesling Alsace 2014
Price: $21.00 Sale $18.48 Case $215
by Anne Krebiehl,MW
" The subtle scent of green and red apples makes for a refreshing opening. They also play on the rounded, clean palate and finish dry with a lovely, lemony briskness. " — (12/31/2015) — Note 86 points - WINE ENTHUSIAST
Rudi Pichler Gruner Veltliner Federspiel 2014
Price: $27.00 Sale $23.76 Case $276
Federspiel designates the wine from the middle harvest in the Wachau, and is typically the largest single production wine at the winery.
The more savory aspects of Grüner Veltliner are present in the aroma of this wine, with yellow apple and spice notes. On the palate, the minerality that is typical of these vineyards comes through, with herb and some wax bean notes.
Robert Weil Riesling Tradition 2014
List $21.00 Sale $18.48 Case $215
The philosophy at Weingut Robert Weil is to combine modern ideas with the long tradition of viticulture in the Rheingau region. This wine is the estate’s classic rendition of the traditional off-dry style that made the Rheingau famous. It is a cuvée from parcels that neighbor the estate’s top vineyard sites in Kiedrich and Eltville. The mineral-rich soils of these vineyards consist of medium-deep stony, fragmented phyllite mixed with loess and loam.
Stadt Krems Gruner Veltliner Kremstal 2014
Price: $15.75 Sale $13.86 Case $161
(90 Points) "With no less clarity or (at 12% alcohol) buoyancy than its 2013 counterpart, thiscuvée features snap pea, pepper cress, crab apple and white peach in a performance of invigorating tartness and piquancy. The texture is satiny, yet the wine also delivers consummate refreshment. Salt and pepper add to the mouthwatering stimulation of its long finish. Despite having not been harvested until early November, this was bottled on January 20 due to demand. Yet such a short élevage doesn’t seem to have come at any obvious cost. (This bottling, officially classified as “Kremstal DAC” but otherwise without any special name of its own, represents, as usual, the intro-level Stadt Krems offering in the US, and while dominated by loess sites, incorporates first passes on several Urgestein parcels. As usual, too, there are only about a quarter as many bottles as of the estate’s Loessterrassen cuvée, which is sold overwhelmingly within Austria.) " Vinous / Antonio Galloni
Von Schubert Riesling Maximin Grunhauser Abtsberg Spatlese 2013
Price: $42.00 Sale $36.96 Case $429
The Abtsberg Spätlese is a selection of barrels produced from fruit harvested late in the season. The longer hang time produces more fully developed aromas and flavors, and greater complexity.
Wittman Spatburgunder 2013
Price: $29.50 Sale $25.96 Case $301
A good amount of dark cherry fruit, an array of dark spiced, black truffles/earthy notes, nice complexity on the nose. A big and chewy Pinot Noir with a nice hand of dark earth and spice to the dark berry fruit, some tannins here at the end but a nice silky texture to them, a firm hand of acidity holding things in place, a nice amount of dark spices at the end. Finish 45+ Excellent
Heinrich Blaufrankisch 2013
Price: $22.50 Sale $19.80 Case $230
(90 points) *Best Buy* Ripe bramble and blackberry vie for attention on the nose. The palate is light and has lots of energy, verve and more fresh-faced fruit. This is just about medium-bodied and offers us an uncomplicated but delicious and refreshing interpretation of Blaufränkisch. (7/2015) Wine Enthusiast
Ostertag Gewurztraminer 2013
Price: $27.00 Sale $23.76 Case $276
Gewurztraminer at the Domaine is always made in an off-dry style. Indeed we pick it later than the other varieties, with a balance similar to most of alsatian «vendanges tardives», while the vine is still feeding the berries with water and nutrients so before the fruits start dehydrating.
This is a pre-poured sit down tasting and is limited to 25 tasters, the fee for this tasting is $35 + gratuity + tax for reservations call 954-782-0606.
