We hosted a series of tastings a year ago featuring most of the major appellations of Bordeaux and for some reason we left out the most important of all the major appellations in the Medoc, Pauillac. One of Bordeaux’s top critics Hugh Johnson has said, "If one had to single out one commune of Bordeaux to head the list, there would be no argument. It would be Pauillac.". Pauillac includes 3 of the 5 premier cru châteaux of Bordeaux: Latour, Lafite Rothschild and Mouton Rothschild. The wines of Pauillac are often considered the quintessence of Bordeaux wines and the longest lived of all.
Join us as we experience ten wines from the region of Pauillac going back to my favorite old vintage from Bordeaux 1959. This event will be at the new Wine Watch Wine Bar across the street from the Wine Watch and Toni Lampasone will be making a special meal to accompany the tasting wines. the fee for this tasting is $179 + tax, for reservations call 954-523-9463 or e-mail andy@winewatch.com.

1959 Chateau Pichon Comtesse de Lalande Pauillac
Price $695.00 Sale $590.75
Quantity in Stock: 2
This is my all-time favorite old vintage from Bordeaux! The 1959's still have great color and still quite a bit of fruit, a classic year for Pauillac.
1966 Chateau Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande Pauillac
NA
The 1966 vintage can be very good to excellent and this is when Chateau like Pichon Comtesse really stand out.
1970 Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste Pauillac
Price: $119.00 Your Price: $101.15
Quantity in Stock: 2
This is one of the top Chateau in Pauillac and the 1970 vintage is for most the best of that decade. These wines are at their peak or passing it right now.
1979 Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste Pauillac
Price: $95.00 Your Price: $80.75
Quantity in Stock: 9
A difficult year in Bordeaux as most of the 1970's but that is why we do these tastings sometimes an excellent producer can surprise you in a difficult year and as I always say there are no great vintages just great bottles when the wine gets to be 40 years old
1996 Chateau Haut Bages Liberal Pauillac
Price: $111.00 Your Price: $94.35
Quantity in Stock: 4
Wine Spectator A rather discreet style, with understated currant and berry aromas and flavors. Medium-bodied, with firm tannins and a silky, fruity aftertaste. Needs time to open a bit. (1/1999)
1998 Carruades de Lafite Pauillac
$295.00 Your Price: $250.75
Quantity in Stock: 4
This is a great vintage for lafite and although this is the second wine of the Chateau this is the only wine from a first growth on the table this evening. I like to point out to our Bordeaux fans that the best value in a great year can be the 2nd wines of the great growths of the Medoc.
1999 Chateau Lynch Bages Pauillac
Price: $150.00 Sale Price: $120.00
Quantity in Stock: 10
(90 points) A charming, lush, round, generous Lynch Bages, the 1999 offers plenty of sweet black currant fruit, damp earth, licorice, cedarwood and spicy herb-like characteristics. Medium-bodied, savory and broad in the mouth with no hard edges, this fully mature effort is a somewhat underrated vintage for this estate. Enjoy it over the next decade. Wine Advocate #196 Aug 2011
2000 Chateau Clerc Milon Pauillac (375ml)
Price: $60.00 Sale Price: $45.00
Quantity in Stock: 6
(92 points) A beautiful wine and one of my favorites from this estate, this blend of nearly two-thirds Cabernet Sauvignon and one-third Merlot is aging impressively. Dense ruby/purple in color, with creme de cassis, charcoal, and sweet leathery and chocolatey notes intermixed with the classic Pauillac cedar and spice box, the wine is medium to full-bodied, fleshy, with sweet tannin and a long finish. (RP) (6/2010) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
2006 Chateau Pontet Canet Pauillac
Price: $110.00 Sale Price: $90.00
Quantity in Stock: 11
(95 Points) The 2006 is a wine to stockpile, especially for those in their thirties and forties as it needs another decade to reach maturity, after which it should keep for 30 years. This vineyard, just south of Mouton Rothschild, has produced an opaque bluish/purple-colored 2006 with an extraordinarily pure nose of graphite, charcoal, sweet creme de cassis, and a hint of scorched earth. Incredible concentration, stunning richness, and a 60-second finish result in a wine that transcends the vintage as well as this estate's 1855 classification. This enormously endowed, modern day classic is a legend in the making. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2050 . Enormous credit is due proprietor Alfred Tesseron for turning things around at this estate in 1994, and continuing to produce first-growth level wines. Pontet-Canet is one of the few bio-dynamically farmed vineyards in the Medoc, and Tesseron is such a perfectionist in both the vineyard and wine cellars that his nickname among other bordelaise is Monsieur Bonsai. Pauillac is on the left bank of the Gironde. St-Julien is to the south. A stream called Ruisseau de Juillac marks part of the boundary between the two communes; other parts are marked by a stone wall and a country lane. To the north, across the Jalle du Breuil, lies St-Estèphe. Pauillac is bounded on the west by the parish of St Sauveur and the Landes forest. All three communes lie within the Haut-Médoc. The town of Pauillac is the largest in the Médoc, with a population of over 5000. Pauillac is somewhat more elevated than the surrounding area, rising to a peak of nearly 30 metres above sea-level in the region of Château Pontet-Canet. The soil is gravelly, as with most of the Haut-Médoc. The forest to the west shelters the vines from the Atlantic winds. Pauillac contains around 1200 hectares of vineyards.
Cabernet Sauvignon is the predominant grape, but it is invariably blended with other grapes. As with all red Bordeaux, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec may also be included in the blend (although wines will not necessarily include all five grapes). Prior to the 19th century, Malbec was predominant.
The style has been described as 'stark'. The predominant fruit flavor is usually blackcurrant, sometimes veering into plum. Pencil-shavings and cigar-box are also characteristic notes.
Wine from Pauillac may be labelled as Haut-Médoc (usually wine which the château considers inferior to its main offering and wishes to market under a different label). Similarly, second (or third) wines from the grandes châteaux may be labelled simply as Pauillac.
