We are hosting virtual tastings every Wednesday on Zoom and Instagram live which will be posted to Instagram TV.  The virtual tasting packs are up on our web page under the gift box selections, and you can purchase them before the event and taste along with us or purchase them any time after the event until the wines are no longer available and taste the wines and watch the producer interview at your leisure.

In just under two weeks, we have our good friend Larry Stone MS founder of Lingua Franca Winery with us from the Willamette Valley live on a zoom call Wednesday, July 28th at 6pm EST.  I will never forget the first time I met Larry Stone at Rubicon restaurant in San Francisco it was in the early 1990’s.  He was one of the few Master Sommeliers working in restaurants at that time and I was just starting my career in the wine industry as sommelier for Darrel and Oliver’s Café Maxx.  His photographic memory about wines that he had tasted years ago was amazing and the wine list at Rubicon was considered one of the best in the world.  I had a chance to catch up with Larry again at the IPNC in 1995 which is one of the best wine tastings that I have ever attended with not only great wines and incredible local cuisine but a plethora of wine personalities like Larry that were hanging out playing pool at the local bar after the days wine tasting events were finished.

We have followed his career after leaving the restaurant industry, he was the general manager of Francis Ford Coppola’s Rubicon Winery in Napa Valley and then moved to Oregon to work with the Evening Land project.  It is great to see Larry fulfill his dream of starting his own winery and Wine Watch was one of the first retail stores to carry these Lingua Franca wines in the state of Florida.

Join us for an hour-long conversation with Larry where we will be showing four wines from Lingua Franca Winery.  We have a package of these four wines listed on this e-mail and in the Wine Watch gift Box section at www.winewatch.com.   If you want to follow along you can purchase all four wines in one pack or any of the wines individually on our web page, just type in Lingua Franca and you will find the selections we are showcasing for the event along with all the wines available from Lingua Franca that we have in the store.

For those that would like to attend in person and be part of the studio audience on the day of the event the price is $55 + tax and there are only 10 seats available to our studio audience the day of the tasting.  There will be a few small bites served but this is not a dinner.  For reservations to be part of the studio audience please call 954-523-9463 or e-mail andy@winewatch.com.

Price: $200.75
2019 Lingua Franca Winery AVNI Chardonnay  30973

This is the only wine that is not estate grown, they moved from 3 vintages to 90% estate fruit. The vineyards are all on Rocky volcanic site.  Gelderman is the best type of volcanic soil, here named after a Dutch family with more pronounced gravels in the top soil.  On the nose this wine has aromas of lemon citrus and mineral, all biodynamic and organically farmed also showing notes of white flowers as the wine opens up. Bright and focused bouquet with lemon citrus, white flowers and a distinct minerality here, a firm hand of acidity and excellent length and complexity on the finish. Finish 45+ Most Excellent

2018 Lingua Franca Chardonnay Estate Eola Amity Hills 30974

Price: $55.50       Your Price: $48.84

The first estate fruit wine from their LSV vineyard that gives expression to a distinctively mineral quality in Lingua Franc’s white wines.   These Chardonnay blocks are located on the stoniest soils they have, over bedrock of 150 feet of red basalt.  Half of their original Chardonnay vineyard acreage is planted from CH548 cuttings taken from the fabled Montrachet vineyard of Burgundy, and the rest is planted with the trusted CH clone 76.  The result is medium sized berries producing fresh and citrusy aromas and these two clones have a more expressive mineral quality to them. A light nose that expresses more mineral character creamy lemon custard, grapefruit zest, jasmine and vanilla, with only 12.5% alcohol still quite ripe and with layers of fruit, light spice and a long-layered finish. Finish 50+ All eastern Exposure the 45th parallel skims the top of Saint Emilion and Avignon. Most Excellent

2017 Lingua Franca Pinot Noir Estate Eola Amity  28308
Price: $55.50       Your Price: $48.84            Quantity in Stock: 15

This is on the Gelderman soils, mainly 777 and 543 and this wine has a bit more perfume and floral notes with black raspberry fruit and a bit more minerality and complexity on the nose.  A big Pinot Noir but quite elegant and this wine has some tannins but a very balanced and a long finish all that nuance from the nose lingering through the finish.  Finish 50+ Most Excellent +

2018 Lingua Franca Pinot Noir The Plow Estate Eola Amity 30977
Price: $72.00       Your Price: $63.36

This looks to become a classic release of The Plow, with the deepest and longest flavors yet, ensuring longevity. As in 2017, it was composed of the finest lots of wine from the top of the vineyard where Larry Stone planted a refined, moderately productive Pinot Noir on the Gelderman-Jory soils that are the most expressive and nuanced of our vineyard site. The result is a powerful wine with luscious texture and length, a wine of contemplation and nuance. The long flavors are a complex of black cherry, dried herbs, black plum, red currant, black tea, rose petal, violets and minerals with a beautiful, long finish.
Vineyard Notes:  The fruit for the 2018 The Plow comes from the best parts of Blocks 1 and 2, PN777 on Gelderman-Jory Complex, a type of shallow volcanic soil about 2-5 feet deep with a layer of large gravels that impart extra energy to the vines and create more complex and intense flavors. In 2018 this translated into a richly layered wine, dense wine, even though the fermentations were handled gently
Production Notes:  In this dense vintage the whole cluster fruit was kept to 20%. Fermentation took place with wild yeast in a combination of stainless steel and concrete tanks. The destemmed fruit is selected for whole berries by a special destemmer/sorter. No broken fruit goes into the cuvée. Cap management begins with gentle pump-overs, followed by traditional pigeage by foot, as needed. After fermentation, the wines age in 24% new and 76% neutral French oak barriques for 12 months followed by an additional 5 months in stainless steel tank to bring the cuvée together prior to bottling.

A bit about Lingua Franca:

Lingua Franca was co-founded by Larry Stone, David Honig, and Dominique Lafon in 2015, inspired by the exceptional vineyard site in the Eola-Amity Hills that Larry bought in 2012. They soon hired Thomas Savre, a brilliant young winemaker with work experience at some of the best domaines in Burgundy and an inquisitive mind. Together they have assembled a team of talented and passionate members. All are committed to farming and winemaking practices that respect the environment, believing that complex and undisturbed ecosystems help to create the most interesting and seductive wines.

Lingua Franca Estate Vineyard
Our home estate vineyard, the 66-acre LS Vineyard, is situated on Lone Star Road next door to two iconic vineyard sites in the Eola-Amity Hills: Seven Springs and Lone Star Vineyard. The site is rich in Jory, Jory-Geldermann, and Nekia soil, and the vineyard is a combination of 18 different Dijon clones and heritage clones and rootstock, sourced from specific vineyards when possible. The parameters here are perfect, with eastern exposure, morning sun, moderate cooling winds, slopes of 12-20% throughout the vineyard, and excellent drainage.

Bunker Hill Vineyard
Bunker Hill Vineyard is a critically acclaimed vineyard site located in the South Salem Hills area, just beyond the city limits with a view of the Willamette River flowing below. Planted exclusively to chardonnay, the vineyard sits at 600-feet elevation with a western exposure and strong cooling breezes. The vine material includes some of the earliest plantings of Dijon clone Chardonnay 76 in Oregon, planted by the same Joel Myer who replanted Seven Springs that same year: 1995. The fruit sourced from this highly lauded vineyard site is fermented, bottled and released as our Bunker Hill Chardonnay. Our 2016 vintage was selected as #34 on Wine Spectator's Top 100 list in 2018 and since then, this is one of our first wines to sell out each year.

2017 Lingua Franca Sisters Chardonnay Eola Amity Hills
Price: $97.50       Your Price: $85.80
This special cuvée is named for my mother Rachel and her sister Aida, who throughout their lives managed to stay together and sustain one another for nearly 90 years. This Chardonnay combines the finest lots of the vintage, from 100% Jory and Nekia soils in the Eola-Amity Hills, sourced from vineyards close to our own Lingua Franca Estate. These shallow, very rocky soils drive mineral, savory, fruit and floral qualities despite the relative youth of the vines. The combination of soil and microclimate creates a wine that is intense and long, yet full of energy. It can seem racy one moment and dense and rich the next, making it lively and multifaceted.
Vinification:  Harvest was timed to maximize freshness and tension in the finished wine. The grapes were whole cluster pressed, settled in tank for an average of 24 hours, then barrel fermented with wild yeast in a combination of 16% new (600-liter puncheons) and 55% neutral French oak barriques from diverse coopers. This wine, featuring exclusively natural acidity, went through full malolactic fermentation in barrel. After aging for an average of 10 months, the wine was transferred with the lees to stainless steel tank 6 months prior to bottling in February 2018.
2017 Vintage:  After late spring rains, the weather was warm and dry, but not too hot. This set the stage for wines of balance, with a complex structure and vivid fruit.

2016 Lingua Franca Bunker Hill Chardonnay Oregon

This is Larry stone former sommelier, an Estate vineyard farmed biodymanically and this is located in Salem, their winemaker worked at DRC and Dujac and this wine has a good amount of minerality flinty with white flowers and lemon citrus, green apple.  A cosmic label imaged taken from the hubble spacecraft, this wine has a lovely balance and a creamy mineral laced texture, very complex and layered finish the bottle opened yesterday is almost identical to the one opened today and both were even better the following day- Bravo the best Chardonnay I have ever tasted from Oregon.  Finish 50+  Most Excellent

2018 Lingua Franca Tongue & Cheek Pinot Noir Willamette Valley
Price: $66.00       Your Price: $58.08

2017 Lingua Franca Pinot Noir Avni Willamette Valley
Price: $45.00       Your Price: $39.60

Bright strawberry and raspberry fruit with a nice amount of pretty floral notes, earthy highlights.  This is all estate bottled on Jory soil mainly pommard clone the biggest berry clone from the heritage plot Ponzi family 115, 114 and 113.  Big ripe red cherry red raspberry very seductive and easy to drink with ripe open fruit very pretty structure mineral floral notes and exotic spices.  Bright and fruity but not light in nuance and spice.  Finish 45+ Excellent +

2018 Lingua Franca Mimi’s Mind Pinot Noir
Price: $97.50                       Your Price: $85.80

Due to its structure, the 2018 Mimi’s Mind starts off more focused than the other 2018 cuvées, with stunning lift. With a little air it reveals a complex of herbs, such as fresh thyme and oregano, and floral notes of rose petal and violet, rich mulberry, red cherry, raspberry, and overtones of aromatic spices such as cinnamon, vanilla and anise. The finish is enveloping and quite long. It becomes creamier and more harmonious with age in the bottle. This has been our most celebrated cuvée since our first release of the 2015 vintage.
Vineyard Notes: Mimi Casteel’s vineyard is a role model for regenerative farming, a method she has developed as she takes a thoughtful consideration of the consequences of her vineyard practices on the environment around and beyond her. It’s an impressive take, combining biodynamic and organic farming principles with science. We are proud to have fruit from her vineyard, which always displays a deep complexity and layers of flavor. The 2018 Mimi's Mind is about 65% the PN667 clone (aromatics) with the remaining 35% sourced from the Oregon classic Pommard Clone (body).
Production Notes:  Because of the quality of Mimi’s fruit, we have always allowed a greater proportion of whole cluster in this cuvée. This year again the wine is 50% whole cluster, fermented traditionally but handled with a light touch, with gentle pump overs. The rest of the fruit is sorted, then destemmed gently so that mainly whole berries go into the fermenters for a more precise flavor profile. After fermentation, it is aged in 26% new oak and the rest in neutral oak barriques.
