Thoughts on the matter: “I would like a wine. The purpose of the wine is to get me drunk. A bad wine will get me as drunk as a good wine. I would like the good wine. And since the result is the same no matter which wine I drink, I’d like to pay the bad wine price.”

This is our fourth event with 2nd generation vintner Jeremy Nickel.  We have been following this winery since their first vintage 2005 and have included the Vineyard House in several Napa Valley Cult Cabernet Sauvignon events.
The Vineyard House was originally Hiram Crabbs place in the late 19th century, it was sold to the Stelling family and then to Gil Nickel.  Gil left this house to his son Jeremy to ensure that he would always have a place in Napa Valley.  On the Vineyard House property there is a 2-acre vineyard which some of the fruit from this site now goes into the this exciting new wine and he has also purchased 35 acres right there on the valley floor located just 50 feet before you get to Harlan estate and Bond Wineries.  In the very near future this wine will be 100% estate bottled.
I have liked every vintage of this wine and we had all of them at the last tasting we had with Jeremy where we put his neighbor Harlan Estate next to Vineyard House and our group of “Wine Drinking People” blind picked the Vineyard House Cabernet Sauvignon 2009 over Harlan Estate 2009- These latest releases are a cut above the first wines.  We are just beginning to see the potential of this Vineyard House property and now with Philip Melka as the consulting winemaker the sky is the limit.
Join us as we experience the newest releases of Cabernet Sauvignon as well as the Chardonnay which is finally available at the Wine Watch!  Second generation vintner special guest Jeremy Nickel will be here to tell the story of each vintage and Chef Toni Lampasone will be making a few small courses to accompany the tasting wines.  The fee for this event is $150 + tax, for reservations call 954-523-9463 or e-mail andy@winewatch.com.

2016 Estate Chardonnay
2018 VINEYARD HOUSE CHARDONNAY NAPA
Price: $75.00       Your Price: $66.00
2018 Vintage - Winter brought much-needed and abundant rains, followed by mild temperatures in spring and early summer. Bud break and flowering occurred a bit late, but under ideal weather conditions, creating plentiful and even fruit set. Summer brought generous sun during the day and cool nights uninterrupted by major heat spikes. The mild summer was followed by extended fall sunshine and moderate heat creating near-ideal conditions for fruit to develop flavor complexity with gradual increases in sugar.
The 2018 Chardonnay is the 5th release of our Estate Chardonnay, and we are delighted with the results.
Meyer lemon, nectarine, flowers, pastry, and sweet spice all meld into a big wine that’s light on its feet. The 2018 Chard performs a balancing act of power with grace; the weight and depth are encapsulated with bright acidity. Perfect for fish, mild cheeses, lobster potpies if you’re feeling fancy, or just on the porch with your loved ones.  Harvest September 10th, 2018

2016 JEREMY NICKEL CELLARS CABERNET SAUVIGNON NAPA VALLEY
Price: $87.00       Your Price: $69.60
The 2016 Jeremy Nickel Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon comes from Atlas Peak at an elevation of 950 feet and our Vineyard House Estate in Oakville. Half of the wine was fermented in new French oak barrels, which integrates the tannin and results in a wine that has great complexity in its’ youth but can cellar for decades. The wild and powerful mountain fruit of Atlas Peak blended with the lush and concentrated fruit from TVH Estate makes for a complex wine of both grace and power. Dark purple in color with aromas of black and red current, blackberry, cigar, oak spice, and violets

2016 Vintage: “A near-perfect growing season” is how critics, winemakers, and growers throughout Napa have described the 2016 vintage. The growing season began much earlier than average but without any extreme heat spikes like 2015. The midsummer months followed with mild and warm days. This absence of high temperatures provided the ideal growing conditions for our grapes; too much heat and the vines shut down to protect themselves.
This warm and gradual weather allowed the skins of the grapes to develop their aromatics, tannins, color, and flavors while keeping sugar development in check and acidity high. The fall followed suit with warm sunny days providing even and steady ripening of the fruit and a nice and steady pace for picking and processing. The final product resulted in what may be the best wines from TVH to date.
Tasting Notes: The deep garnet-purple color coats the glass and the depth and complexity jump out of the glass. Notes of red, blue, and black fruits are all weaved together in harmony. The nose and palate are packed with red currants, cherry, blueberries, blackberries and black currents, violets, crushed rock, cocoa, and aged tobacco. The length of the finish, the fine knit tannins, and the explosive nature of this wine is testament to our amazing vineyards followed by transparent craftsmanship in the cellar. This wine drinks well young, but patience and time will add even more complexity.

Wine Watch Review: A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon 85%, Cabernet Franc 6%, Merlot 6%, Malbec 3%.  Dark currant and cherry fruit, dark spice and dark mocha chocolate, fresh plowed earth, graphite mineral, a cornucopia of fruit earth and spice on the nose.  Very big and chewy with dark cherry, currant, cassis very rich on the tongue with ripe round tannins and a very silky sexy texture to this wine with layers of dark spices.  This wine has lots of juicy fruit very exotic spices and a long finish echoing the nuance from the nose through the finish.  Finish 50+      Most Excellent

A bit about The Vineyard House

http://cache1.wine.com/aboutwine/basics/images/winerypics/19450.jpg

The Vineyard House (TVH) is an exceptional and rare Cabernet Sauvignon created by proprietor Jeremy Nickel as a tribute to his late father Gil Nickel, founder of three of Napa’s most acclaimed wineries: Far Niente, Nickel & Nickel, and Dolce.  Like his father before him, Jeremy’s vision for TVH is to build a world-class estate winery around his one-of-a-kind property in Oakville, and to produce an extraordinary and inspirational Cabernet Sauvignon that is at once drinkable and collectible. To that end, TVH has received rave reviews and held its own twice in blind tastings against Napa’s most renowned cult wines.  TVH takes its name from a 19th century farmhouse surrounded by vineyards in a picturesque valley in Oakville, California.  Known  as The Vineyard House, the home was built in 1853 by William  Baldridge, one of Napa’s most prominent citizens. It was bestowed to  Jeremy by Gil when he passed away in 2003.

Six vintages have been produced to date: 2005 through 2010. Production in the first three years was only 200 cases each. The 2008 vintage was 350 cases, and the 2009 vintage was 500 cases. The 2010 vintage is 700 cases and every subsequent vintage has also been under 1000 cases.

Jeremy is proud to continue the family tradition of great winemaking.  “Here’s to all we do that would make our fathers proud!

"My father taught me many life lessons, one of which was “never compromise on quality.” The Vineyard House Cabernet Sauvignon is a tribute to my father’s commitment to excellence, as well as his passion for fine Cabernet. An “Okie from Muskogee,” who established three of Napa Valley’s most iconic brands, Gil Nickel was not only my father, but my hero, whose lessons continue to inspire me every day. here’s to our fathers!"  Jeremy Nickel
