“Most bad," the host concluded. "If you ask me, something sinister lurks in men who avoid wine, games, the company of lovely women, and dinnertime conversation. Such people are either gravely ill or secretly detest everyone around them.”

― Mikhail Bulgakov, The Master and Margarita

I have always said I don't trust people that don't drink wine....

I have also always said that Vino Nobile de Montepulciano is the best value in Tuscany, you get a similar quality wine to Brunello di Montalcino at close to 50% of the price and Dei is one of the benchmark wineries from this region.

I’m trying to keep the Wine Bar busy every Thursday Friday and Saturday night with a great opportunity to come out and drink with us so you can plan on us hosting a great wine tasting at least three nights a week until things get back to normal.   We will also be hosting a virtual wine tasting every Wednesday night as most winery personalities are still not traveling to host and event in person.

This will be the first event we have hosted since the pandemic started with a real person as Caterina Dei just happened to be in the US when this craziness started and has not been able to get back to Tuscany.  When I found out that one of our favorite producers was here and that we could host an event with a live person I immediately put a date on the calendar to have Caterina come and present her families wines at the wine Bar.   The fee for this tasting is $195 + tax and this includes dinner!  For reservations call 954-523-9463 or e-mail andy@winewatch.com.

Cantine Dei – Il segreto del successo delle Cantine Dei si basa sul rispetto per il territorio e sulla passione per il vino, uniti ad uno spirito imprenditoriale con radici nella lavorazione

A bit about Dei winery:

When Catherina Dei stopped by the store a few days ago I was blown away by the quality of her wines, from the Rosso to the Riserva Bossona they are some of the best wines that I have in the store in each of their prospective price points.  The Dei Estate has been owned by the Dei family since the early 1970’s.  It is located in the heart of Montepulciano and is surrounded by a spectacular landscape.  The Dei winery is located inside a centuries old park next to Villa Martiena, an old country manor that was restored in the 1930’s by the famous architect Piacentini.  The estate covers and areas of about 100 hectares and is divided into 4 vineyards:  Bossona, Martiena, La Ciarliana and La Piaggia, they are perfect for the production of Vino Nobile which 31 of the 38 planted hectares are comprised of.  At Dei they use a variety of new world and old world technology to make their wines.  The planting density is 4,700 plants per hectare.  They shoot thin and prune selectively to limit the production to an average of 50 quintals of grapes per hectare and use temperature controlled stainless steel tanks for fermentation.

A bit about Vino Nobile di Montepulciano:

This area Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG (Pronounced - VEE-noh NAW-bee-lay dee mawn-teh-pool-CHAH-noh) is located in the hilly area around the town of Montepulciano, southeast of Siena in the eastern portion of Italy's Tuscany region. The designated area is actually situated inside the large Chianti subzone of Colli Senesi. Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is named after the town and the historic notion that the wine was available only for the tables of nobility. This was the very first DOCG in Italy. Unfortunately, its first vintage in 1983 was met with disappointing reviews. That and the fact that over 250,000 cases of this wine are now produced each year has somewhat diminished its noble aspect. Quality since that 1983 vintage has improved, however, and wines from the top producers are viewed as some of Italy's best. Vino Nobile di Montepulciano wines are made from 60 to 80 percent Prugnolo (sangiovese), 10 to 20 percent canaiolo, and up to 20 percent of other varieties (although no more than 10 percent white). One of the other red varieties most often used is the Mammolo, which adds the scent of violets to the bouquet. White grapes like trebbiano and malvasia are no longer required, which allows winemakers to produce wines that are more intense and longer lived. The wines of this DOCG must be aged for 2 years in oak or chestnut casks, 3 years for those labeled riserva. In 1989 a new DOC was formed rosso di montepulciano. It's located in exactly the same area and uses the exact same grape varieties as for the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG. This change has allowed producers to reclassify some of the wines originally intended from Vino Nobile di Montepulciano to the Rosso di Montepulciano DOC. As a result, lesser wines can be used in the new DOC, which should raise the overall quality of wines coming from the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG.
