"Now wines are wonders; great wines are magical; and winemakers are mad. Like horse fanciers, they are always trying to improve the breed."  - William E. Massee

Great wines are magical and if you have never tried a wine you would never know just how great it is and there are so many small producers in Napa Valley it’s hard to keep up.  That’s why whenever we receive a collection of wines from a producer that has been around for a while and we have never experienced the wines the first thing that I do is put a date on the calendar to educate myself on another great grower producer from one of the world’s most renown wine regions.

Clark Cloudon has been around for decades and at one point they were distributed in Florida but as with many small producers they can sell everything they make direct so rather than deal with the hassle of selling wine to a distributor they sell most of their production at the winery or on the mailing list.  We have an incredible collection of Clark Claudon wines in the store right now, so we thought it was time to start popping bottles.

Join us as we experience 15 different wines from this grower producer from north east side of Howell Mountain.  These wines have a unique terroir and a winemaking team that is the envy of every small grower producer in Napa Valley.  The fee for this wine tasting which includes dinner is $175 + tax, for reservations call 954-523-9463 or e-mail andy@winewatch.com

A bit about Clark Cloudon Winery:

In 1974, shortly after their Peace Corp assignment in Colombia, Tom Clark and Laurie Claudon came to the Napa Valley, new baby boy in tow.  Immediately caught up in the infectious energy, they were ready to take their place among a small group of visionary grape growers and winemakers. Together, that group of pioneers laid the foundation for the unrivaled status of today’s Napa Valley.

Over the next four years as their family grew. Tom continued to refine his grape growing expertise and Laurie learned along with him.  In 1979, Tom founded Clark Vineyard Management and began developing and managing vineyards under his own company.

Then in 1989 pressed by a friend, Tom and Laurie hiked a piece of property on the north east side of Howell Mountain.  Though unproven, it was the proverbial love at first sight and ideal for a Cabernet vineyard.   Because of Tom’s considerable reputation, the sellers desire to support the purchase and the couple’s willingness to bet on themselves, they leased and developed the property while eventually exercising their option to buy.  Working together, the family joked about calling it Sweat Equity, but the vineyard they developed would become Clark-Claudon Vineyards.

Their business was founded in the old tradition of family winemaking where the art begins in the vineyard and ends with a beautiful bottle of wine. The name Clark-Claudon and the logo's meeting of the two feathers represent a joint commitment to the pursuit of their dream and to the preservation of the environment that supports it. Since then, Clark-Claudon Vineyards has received critical acclaim for their Estate Grown Cabernet, Eternity Reserve Estate Cabernet and their Wild Iris Sauvignon Blanc.

To this day, Clark-Claudon Vineyards is a family affair.
Laurie, the soul of Clark-Claudon, manages the business, public relations and marketing while staying in close contact with the vineyard and the winemaking.

Tom directs production and manages the vineyard with son Joshua who now owns Clark Vineyard Management with his wife Heather.

Daughter, Briana, a professional photographer, is the resident photographer and design guru; www.brianamariephotography.com.
Son-in-law Brian, often Tom's assistant, plays too many roles to list!

The third generation: Brandon, Trevor, Josephine, Paxton and Finley are growing up in this very special world.

Winemaking at Clark-Claudon is a beautiful dance among nature, art and science. Though the members of our winemaking team are esteemed individual winemakers, together they rise to a whole new level. They share an infectious camaraderie based on mutual respect, drive and a soulful awareness of the dance. Their nature directed winemaking reflects the heritage of Clark-Claudon and assures that each CC wine is a pure, world class expression of season, place and the passion of it makers.

Frederic Delivert

Frederic Delivert came to Clark-Claudon with an impressive resume. Born and raised in France, Frederic earned a Masters Degree with a focus on enology, viticulture & international wine sales and managed the French domains; Domaine Croix Maro & Domaine de la Valmale. Once in the US, Frederic refined his artist expertise at Far Niente, Duckhorn and Hafner before becoming the assistant winemaker at Plump Jack & Cade.  While there, he played a prominent role in making many renowned 90-99pt wines.

Beyond his exemplary education, experience and reputation, Frederic’s positive attitude, work ethic and terroir based winemaking philosophy makes him a perfect match for Clark-Claudon.

Jean Hoefliger

Jean Hoefliger was born and raised in Switzerland where his initial experience took him from Switzerland to Bordeaux, and South Africa, making wine at the esteemed estates of Chateau Lynch-Bages, Chateau Carbonnieux, and Meerlust. After completing a winemaking and viticulture degree at the Swiss Federal School of Changins, Jean came to California where he spent five years as winemaker for Newton Vineyards raising their wines to world class heights.

Currently he is the GM and winemaker at Alpha Omega along with consulting winemaker Michel Rolland. In addition, Jean consults for a number of local and international wine projects.  Jean’s esteem has grown as his wines continue to garner high scores and critical acclaim while his generosity of spirit, passion and down to earth attitude shine above it all.

Brian Forgie

A graduate of Cal Poly, son-in-law Brian Forgie expected to continue his career as a high school teacher. Instead, shortly after moving to the Napa Valley with his fiancé, Briana Clark, he worked at Miner Family Vineyards and then became the assistant winemaker at Grace Family Vineyards. Then in 2004 Brian was lured into the family business.

Brian brings just the right balance of expertise, family pride, enthusiasm and work ethic to our winemaking team.  In addition, Brian is essential in training the third generation at Clark-Claudon.

The Clark-Claudon Family Vineyard; 18 acres carved out of 117 acres, is located on the north east side of Howell Mountain between 800 ft and 1,000 ft elevation.  It’s shallow, mountain soils, cool evening breezes and excellent sun exposure are ideal for a low yield of small, intense Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot grapes.

With expansive 360 degree views, the vineyard is double planted on the terraces utilizing both the inside and outside contours. This close planting coupled with the shallow soils provokes the vines to struggle just enough to develop beautiful character. The varying elevations, exposures and soil depths also result in different ripening schedules.  Consequently, there are typically three weeks between the first harvest date and the last.  This results in five to eight small, distinct harvest lots.

Our farming philosophy of working with nature is supported by sustainable, low impact and state of the art viticultural practices throughout each season. These include expert water and canopy management, attracting natural predators through the use of hawk, kestrel and song bird boxes as well as providing both a cover crop and surrounding plants that house beneficial insects. The forest, brook and meadows that comprise the balance of the 117  acres are conserved for the abundant birds and wildlife who call it home.

The vineyard is a beautiful place to enjoy nature, peacefulness, family and friends. From season to season it produces exceptional fruit and feeds our family’s soul as we practice the age-old art of wine growing.

The Eternity Vineyard, located at 1700 ft elevation on Howell Mountain, is our tiny Bordeaux field blend named in honor of our daughter Briana’s marriage to Brian Forgie in the year 2000.  Located at the family home, Briana walked with her dad, Tom through the Eternity Vineyard on her way to a garden ceremony.  It was a Celtic celebration immortalized by a piece of glass art, “Eternity”, created by glass artist, Franci Claudon; www.magpiestudiodesign.com.

Wild Iris Sauvignon Blanc
The fruit for our Wild Iris Sauvignon Blanc is sourced from the Napa Valley, tiny Lamb Benz Vineyard. Since it is under the management of Clark Vineyard Management, our complete control assures exquisite fruit from vintage to vintage.
