Italy has some of the best values in the wine world and Tuscany is one of Italy’s leading wine producing regions.  Tuscany is home to some Italy’s most popular wines like Brunello di Montalcino and Chianti Classico as well as "Supertuscan" wines like Tignanello, Sassicaia and Ornellaia.

These wines represent a new style or breed of wines from Tuscany that began on the coast with the first commercial release of Sassicaia with the 1968 vintage from Tenuta San Guido.  Next, Piero Antinori released the 1971 Tignanello and the rest is history.  The super Tuscan era was off and running and the only thing that is required to be part of this group is that your wine doesn’t adhere to the DOC or DOCG requirements giving the producers more leeway to experiment with different varietals and production methods.

Many of the wines contain the native Sangiovese varietal but some are made exclusively from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot or a blend of these and other Bordeaux varietals.  Join us as we experience 12 wines going back to the 1988 vintage with one of my favorite Fontodi’s Flaccianello which is 100% Sangiovese and for all practical purposes could be labeled a Chianti.  We also have the three aia’s; Sassicaia 1990, Solaia 2000 and Ornellaia 2004 along with several other top level wines all in the Super Tuscan category and all 13+ years old.

Flaccianello is 100% Sangiovese and was a single vineyard wine from Fontodi’s estate in Panzano up until the 2003 vintage.  Today it is a selection of the best Sangiovese that the estate has to offer and the 2016 vintage scored (100 Points) in the Wine Advocate putting it in an elite group of wines from Tuscany.

Cavaliere is now recognized as one of the most interesting expressions of Sangiovese in Tuscany. The vineyards planted with rational criteria (6000 plant ha and a conscious choice of clones or of mass selections) are grown with care and respect for the naturaI balance.
After an initial harvesting, I leave one / two bunches per plant for a further maturation that will give then the selection of the Cavaliere.
Aging in concrete for 18 months. The natural qualities of this wine are great elegance, very pleasant to drink, with refined aromas, persistent, never aggressive.

This wine is the outcome of Elisabetta’s intuition and aspiration to make a great wine in Maremma, a wish realized with Giacomo Tachis’s precious help. This wine is from a nearby estate, Tenuta Campo di Sasso, comprised of 3 plots of 46 hectares, situated south west of Biserno and close to the town of Bibbona. The soils are very different from the ones of Biserno, made up of mostly sand and a little clay. The first vintage was in 2003 - a famously hot summer, which helped both to produce a great Syrah and to put the wine on the map. The wine is made from 32% Syrah and the remainder is a blend of Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot.

The Sette Ponti Estate has been one of the family’s properties since the 1950’s, when Antonio’s father, Alberto bought the initial 50 hectares directly from the princesses Margherita and Maria Cristina Savoia- Aosta. It is located in the Chianti, between Arezzo and Florence, and takes its name from the number of bridges that cross the river Arno between the two cities. The first of these bridges, the Buriano Bridge (13th century) can been seen in the background of Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa.

Baffonero takes its name from a vineyard, 100% Merlot, that was one of the first to be planted at Rocca di Frassinello. The company was born of a joint venture between Castellare di Castellina and Domaines Baron de Rothschild-Lafite, the most famous chateau in the world. The Baffonero vineyard lies below the winery designed by Renzo Piano, on terrain with perfect exposure.
