"Therefore God give thee of the dew of heaven, and the fatness of the earth, and plenty of corn and wine."
Genesis 27:28

Unfortunately, god did not give us plenty of Clos du Lambrays.  One of the reasons that Burgundy is the most expensive wine on the planet Earth is that they had 1000 years to promote their wines.   And many of the regions top wines like Clos Des Lambrays are in such limited supply that their production is around 2500 cases in most vintages of this great nearly Monopole Grand Cru.  There are not many regions of the wine world that have the history of Burgundy's Cote D'Or and with that history comes a very high price tag.

Burgundy is simple in that there are only 2 grapes grown here, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay but there are over 600 villages making it incredibly confusing.  With all the different villages there are only 4 that are categorized as Grand Cru Monopole.  Monopole means that there is only a single producer that makes wine from this vineyard and Grand Cru means that the dirt here is considered to be the most unique conducive to making KILLER juice every year.

The Clos Des Lambrays is almost owned entirely by one person, this property was recently acquired by Bernard Arnault the owner of LVMH.  The remaining tenth of an acre of Clos des Lambrays belongs to Domaine Taupenot-Merme. Co-owner and winemaker Romain Taupenot said that any dream Arnault might have of a monopoly will have to wait. "If Bernard Arnault would like to sell to us a part of the Clos des Lambrays that he just bought, we would obviously be ready to listen," said Taupenot as quoted in the Wine Spectator.

Join us as we experience 12 wines from Domaine Des Lambrays back to the 1983 vintage.  The price to attend this event which includes dinner is $350.00 + tax per person and there are only 12 spaces available at this event, for reservations call 954-523-9463 or e-mail andy@winewatch.com.

A bit about Clos Des Lambrays :

The very first reference to « Clos des Lambrays » traces back to the fourteenth century. Archives of the Abbey of Cîteaux reveal its founding around 1365. An engraved milestone, still in its original location, commemorates the founding. After the French Revolution, the Clos became extremely fragmented. Based on the archives and maps of the vines owned by the Domaine, the survival and recomposition of the fragments of the Clos des Lambrays was due in large part to the strong vision and willpower of its different owners during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

In 1936, when the first appellations d’origine are issued, the Clos des Lambrays was listed as a Premier Cru However, this proved to be a misnomer as the wine was always considered to be a Grand Cru by experts.

In between Gevrey-Chambertin and Chambolle-Musigny, the village of Morey-Saint-Denis quietly produces many Grands Crus: Clos des Lambrays, Bonnes-Mares, Clos Saint-Denis, Clos de la Roche, Clos de Tart. Among the Côte de Nuits, Morey-Saint-Denis is the village with the largest concentration of vines ranked as Grands Crus.

The Clos des Lambrays benefits from an especially unique location. This Cru is a “haut-lieu”, an emblematic point within Côte de Nuits. The smooth slopes of the hillside are subjected to different and complex sun exposures where the vines have been planted and grown for 30, 50, 60 years, or even longer. The size, width and amplitude and the topographical diversity of these slopes give the Pinot noir an optimal and varied terroir.

At the heart and the summit of the estate visitors will find… the eponymous Clos. There are also two plots of the Morey-Saint-Denis Premier Cru and four plots of the Morey-Saint-Denis village, all of them planted with Pinot noir. With the acquisition of a few “ouvrées” of Chardonnay of two “Climats” classified as Premier Cru in Puligny-Montrachet, les Folatières and the Clos du Cailleret, the estate is now complete.

The estate also boasts a castle and its ancient cellar, dating back to the seventeenth century, and of one of the most beautiful gardens of the region. The garden features a three hundred year old cedar as well as orchids and a collection of roses. This classical beauty of the grounds contribute heavily to the wine’s aesthetic qualities.

Clos Du Lambrays is the closest thing to a Grand Cru Monopole in the Cotes De Nuits as it is almost owned entirely by one person.  This property was recently acquired by Bernard Arnault the owner of LVMH.  Clos des Lambrays is an enclosed vineyard of almost 21.5 acres near the village of Morey-St.-Denis.   Domaine des Lambrays owns 21.4 acres of the clos, which dates back to the 14th century and was once part of the vast holdings of the Abbey of Citeaux.  The remaining tenth of an acre of Clos des Lambrays belongs to Domaine Taupenot-Merme.
