“Sometimes it would be nice to just have some red wine with dinner, but it’s not worth the risk. I have a great life, a great situation. Why would I want to risk self-destructive behavior?”

Kristin Davis

If wine with dinner is destructive then I am a wrecking ball!   We have another incredible line-up of “Social Distancing” wine tastings t the Wine Bar this week.

It’s Wednesday and that means Virtual Tasting Time!

We are hosting virtual tastings every Wednesday on Zoom and Instagram live which will be posted to Instagram TV.  So, if you can’t make it at 6pm to chat with Marimar and Cristina Torres, the owners of Marimar Estate on Wednesday, August 12th you can tune in any time after that by checking out the video posted to Wine Watch’s Instagram page.  The virtual tasting packs are up on our web page under the gift box selections and you can purchase them before the event and taste along with us or purchase them any time after the event until the wines are no longer available and taste the wines and watch the interview at your leisure.

In two weeks, we have our good friend Armando Fumanelli here from Verona Italy.  Join us as we welcome one of the top producers from Valpolicella on Wednesday, August 26th at 2pm EST.  We will be showing five wines from Marchesi Fumanelli and we have a four pack listed on this e-mail and in the Wine Watch gift Box section of the Web page if you want to follow along you can purchase all four wines in one pack or any of the wines individually on our web page just type in Fumanelli and you will find the selections we are showcasing for the event.

I love Italian wines.  It is hard to believe that when I bought the store 21 years ago we only had 4 different Italian labels on the shelf.  Today, we have one of the greatest collections of Barolos, Barbarescos, Super Tuscans, Chianti, and of course Amarone available not only in South Florida but anywhere in the world!

The wines of Marchesi Fumanelli were introduced to me through a good friend when he brought a magnum of the 2003 Fumanelli Amarone Octavius to our Dal Forno Romano Amarone tasting.  Although these wines are very different in style, the Fumanelli Amarone Octavius was impressive next to the most famous wines of the land of many cellars, Valpolicella.  So from that date on I was on a quest to learn more about Fumanelli and all the other wines that they produce and although I had never had their wines I learned that this is one of the oldest and most important estates in the region.

The Marchesi Fumanelli family has cultivated grapes and produced wines from their estate for 28 generations dating back to 1470. They deftly combine traditional and modern techniques to produce authentic expressions of their distinctive terroir. Fumanelli is one of the region’s largest and most historic family owned wineries, having 78 acres of exclusively estate grown fruit within the walls of their ancient property, located eight miles from Verona. The Squarano estate is situated in the heart of Valpolicella, on a gentle hilltop surrounded by vineyards, cherry, and cypress trees.

A bit about Marchesi Fumanelli:
http://www.squarano.com/template/fumanelli/img/logo_index.jpg

Located in the Lessini Mountains, northwest of Verona and east of Lake Garda, the Valpolicella district features a series of verdant valleys and steep, vine-covered ridges. Viticulture and winemaking in the region dates back to the Bronze Age. The Marchesi Fumanelli family has been vinifying wines in the Veneto since 1470. Today, they are the region’s largest and most important landholder. The winery is located on the Squarano Estate near the village of San Floriano in the heart of the Valpolicella district. This ancient site, cultivated by the Romans more than 2,000 years ago, possesses many archeological remains including the vestiges of a temple dedicated to the goddess Flora.

The vineyards of the Squarano Estate are planted on southeast facing hillsides at altitudes ranging from 95 to 450 feet. Soils are a mixture of lime and clay at the foot of the hill and chalky clay in the higher elevations. The Estate’s vineyards are quite mature with an average vine age of 40-50 years. Varieties planted include Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella and Molinari with small amounts of Garanega and Trebbiano. The trellising features the traditional Veronese pergola and spalliera systems with vines closely spaced at 2,500 per hectare. Yields are kept low the overall average is 50 hectoliters per hectare with many blocks producing fewer the 25.

Marchesi Fumanelli is a family owned and managed winery currently managed by Armando Fumanelli. In his role as Proprietor and CEO of Marchesi Fumanelli, Armando leads his experienced team with the goal of deftly combining traditional and modern techniques to produce authentic expression of their distinctive terroir.

Prior to joining Marchesi Fumanelli in 1998, Armando completed a Political Sceince degree in Switzerland and subsequently spent several years working for the Italian Embassy in several East African and Middle Eastern countries.

Since joining his historic family winery, Armando has overseen the restructuring and replanting of the wine cellars and vineyards to bring the Squarano Estate back to its splendor and glamour of past centuries. Marchesi Fumanelli wines are the reference point for Pedigree and Provenance in the heart of Valpolicella.
