“History’s lessons drowned in red wine”
Children’s Crusade by Sting
I’M GOING TO KEEP THIS SHORT AS I’M OFFICIALLY ON VACATION!!
We are reopening the Wine Bar with a study in 20-year old wines and that means we are open for regular business in addition to hosting the 12 customers that want to check out the list of tasting wines below that we will be drinking this evening. If you can’t make the tasting and want to see how these are drinking we do have a limited amount of 1997 vintage wines in the store so I have included them on this offering.
The 1997 vintage...at 20 years old- how are they drinking now??

1997 Louis Latour Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru (375ml)
Price: $49.00 Your $43.12
After the ravages of the phylloxera epidemic at the end of the 19th century the Latour family took the then unusual decision to tear up the dead Aligoté and Pinot Noir vines and replace them with Chardonnay. This decision leads them to create one of Burgundy's most celebrated white whites.
Today the Latour family owns 11 hectares which makes them the biggest owner in the appellation. The Latour's Corton-Charlemagne vineyards are located on a prime section of the Corton hillside where the south-easterly aspect ensures maximum exposure to the sun. The fruit is harvested as late as possible to guarantee maximum ripeness
1997 Mongeard-Mugneret Grands-Echezeaux Grand Cru
(89-92 points) The ruby-colored 1997 Grands-Echezeaux reveals black fruit aromas intermingled with notes of tobacco and cedar. This is a powerful, full-bodied, supple wine with flavors reminiscent of stones, earth, minerals, cigar smoke, and mixed berries. Well-structured and extremely flavorful, it should be at its best if drunk over the next 6 years. Vincent Mongeard, who now runs this famous estate, is extremely happy with his 1997s. 'When I compare my wines to those of my colleagues, I am comforted in what I was able to achieve. Even though it is not the vintage of the century, it is certainly extremely good.' (10/1999) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
1997 Etude Cabernet Sauvignon Napa
(96 points) The 1997 Cabernet Sauvignon...ranks alongside the finest Tony Soter has produced. Don't miss it! Opaque purple-colored, with a gorgeously seamless personality, this unfined/unfiltered wine exhibits classic aromas of cassis, licorice, chocolate, and toast. Rich and full-bodied, with sweet tannin, a multilayered mid-palate, and a terrific finish, it possesses accessibility and opulence...(RP) (6/2000) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
1997 Penfolds Bin 707 Cabernet Sauvignon South Australia
(91 points) Generous in flavor, supple in texture, delivering a ripe mouthful of mint-shaded black cherry and currant flavors that linger on the open finish, echoing mint and fruit. Tannins are beautifully integrated. Best from 2005 through 2012. 15,884 cases made. –HS Wine Spectator Issue: Jun 15, 2001
1997 Quilceda Creek Cabernet Sauvignon Washington
(94 Points) The 1997 Cabernet Sauvignon was fashioned from 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot, and 2% Cabernet Franc. It offers a boisterous rosemary and black fruit-scented nose. Big, broad, and chewy, this medium to full-bodied wine is packed with black fruits, spices, and hints of tar. It is masculine, concentrated, and in need of cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2020. Wine Advocate # 133, Feb 2001
1997 Nozzole Il Pareto Tuscany
Nozzole Il Pareto is an intense expression of Cabernet Sauvignon, with a classic cassis fragrance offset by notes of vanilla and cedar. The palate is characterized by great ripeness and full, sweet black fruit concentration set in a firm yet elegant structure of mellow tannins. The finish is lush and penetrating, confirming the notes of vanilla and cedar foreshadowed in the nose and mid-palate.
1997 Eraldo Viberti Barolo
Price: $114.00
Quantity in Stock: 12
A classic barolo with dried flowers and notes of black spice tar and tobacco with a nice amount of red berry cherry fruit with the tannins smoothing out nicely on the finish. Finish 40+ Very Good +
1997 Fonseca Vintage Port
Price: $90.00
Quantity in Stock: 19
(93 Points) Somewhat of a lightweight for Fonseca, but undeniably charming, this dark ruby/purple-colored wine offers a floral, exotic, flamboyant bouquet, a sweet, fleshy style, but not a great deal of weight or massiveness. Heady alcohol, sweet tannin, and a velvety texture make for a gorgeous finish. While I would have preferred to have seen more weight, structure, and intensity, this is an outstanding, albeit lighter than normal Fonseca. Anticipated maturity: now-2020 Wine Advocate # 126 Jan 2000
