“We ought to be opening a bottle of wine!”

Edith Wharton

You ought to be opening a GREAT bottle every night!  And as a customer of the Wine Watch you can open a GREAT bottle every night- Hey I’m opening at least two.

We have over 30,000 bottles in the store with vintage wines like the 2006 Wolf Family Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley which is a relative value for a Napa Wine that is now drinking at or near its peak for most wine drinking people at 13 years of age at under $100 per bottle!

Of all the recent releases the 2014 vintage is drinking the best right now it is a bit lighter than 2012, 2013, 2015 and 2016.  This Wolf Family 2014 is 100% estate grown fruit and at under $50 another relative value from a great small family owned Napa Valley winery.  Check out these Wolf Family Vineyards wines from Napa Valley they are one of the best small producers with a focus on top quality wines at a reasonable price.

From St. Helena Vineyards at the foothills of the Mayacamas Mountains, 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Verdot and Malbec in the blend.  This wine has a good amount of dark currant and cassis berry fruit, dark tobacco spice and a fresh gravelly rock earthy notes, espresso and bitter chocolate coming out on the second day even more complex.  Lots of juicy fruit here on the tongue with ripe round tannins, very smooth on the tongue with a nice hand of that dark tobacco spice and the earthy rocky mineral notes through the finish, very well built and even better on the second day.  Finish 50+  Only 325 cases produced of this vintage, 20 months of barrel aging.    Most Excellent

2012 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon

2012 Wolf Family Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon St. Helena Napa

Price: $97.50    Your Price: $82.83              Quantity in Stock: 9

This is a 4.5 Acre estate on poor volcanic soils, this wine is made from older vines and it is 100% varietal, there is a bit more new French Oak here for 24 months.  This wine has a complex bouquet of aromas, dark cherry and currant berry fruit, cigar box spice and that same fresh crushed rock earthy minerality of the first wine, opening up nicely on the second day even bigger and more complex.  A big and chewy wine with tannins like melted chocolate on the tongue very rich and showing an array of dark berry fruit, dark chocolate, espresso and more as this wine opens up, a long layered finish, I would like to try this wine again in 10 years.  Finish 50+    Most Excellent +

(92 points) The outstanding 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon comes from a vineyard near St. Helena. It exhibits rich blackberry and blackcurrant fruit as well as hints of underbrush, graphite, and tar, plush, opulent tannins, full body, and attractive fruit. It should drink well for 15+ years.    Robert Parker's Wine Advocate 12/2009

A bit about Wolf Family Vineyards:

Jane and Doug Wolf didn't come to Napa Valley to start a business. They came, like so many others, to enjoy good wine and good company in one of the most beautiful places on earth. That simple joy is what led them to buy their first property here in 1997; it's what lead them to plant the vines and harvest their first crop, to make a small vintage for sharing only among friends and family.

Doug and Jane Wolf, Proprietors

One thing leads to another, and for the following 19 years, winemaking evolved from a small hobby into a true labor of love. Wolf Family Vineyards has remained small and family-owned throughout, never making more than 1000 cases per year, yet still earning high praise for the integrity of its wine.

Wolf Family Vineyards is to this day a small winery grounded in respect for the land, love for family and friends, and the simple pleasure of drinking good wine.

Karen Culler, Winemaker Emeritus

Doug and Jane Wolf had just purchased a St. Helena Estate in 1996 and were fortunate to be introduced early on to Karen Culler. The timing was perfect, she had just decided to leave a corporate job at Robert Mondavi's Vichon winery after many years, and create her own wine brand, Culler. Karen's plan also included becoming involved with other premium quality, small production wines. Although the main vineyard replanting was just underway, she sensed that this location on the west side of St. Helena was something special.

The Wolf's initial intention in purchasing their original property was not for the winery but as it became clear what the estate was capable of producing, their desire to make an artisan crafted, top quality Cabernet Sauvignon aligned with what Karen knew would be possible and that started the journey of making wine with the Wolf's that would span nearly two decades.

Though now retired and traveling the world, Karen remains an integral part of the Wolf team.

Mike Hirby, Winemaker

Michael Hirby grew up in a highly creative family that had a deep love of food and cooking.  At the Colorado College, while studying Philosophy and Music, he honed these skills, and developed a serious passion for wine. After graduating with a degree in B.L.A.S. Philosophy of Music, Michael worked as a Sommelier for two years - honing his tasting skills and gaining expertise in the world’s greatest wines - before deciding that winemaking was his true calling.  After spending several months exploring the wine country in Spain and France, he made his way to Napa Valley. There he studied winemaking and viticulture at Napa Valley College and worked in the cellar with Les Behrens for 2 years, until he was hired as the winemaker for Realm Cellars in 2002. Michael has since gone on to make wine for several different ultra-premium wine projects, as well as his own brand Relic Wines, all of which have garnered consistent acclaim. Michael feeds his winemaking and vineyard skills through his insatiable appetite for information. His intimate knowledge of grape flavor development in the vineyard and individualistic, detailed winemaking practices are deeply entrenched within a natural philosophy.  He is committed to making the most delicious, complex, fine wines in the world, which tell the story of their vineyard origins. Mike is excited to bring his palate, vision, and sentient adaptability to Wolf Family Vineyards.

The Wolf Family Vineyards Estate is located on the valley floor in the heart of the St. Helena AVA.  Karen Culler, Winemaker Emeritus led the selection and planting of the nearly 5 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon and just under an acre of Sauvignon Blanc to take advantage of the unique soils and sun exposure that their vineyards experience here at their organically farmed estate.  They are incredibly fortunate to also have winemaker Mike Hirby working closely with the well-regarded Napa Valley vineyard management team Oak Knoll Farming to oversee all of Wolf’s vineyard operations.
