"At least once a day you should do something purely for enjoyment, and wine is my way of relaxing." - Young Uck Kim, Wine Collector

We try to do things that are relaxing more than once a day here at the Wine Watch… but that's just us...

051717-Offering-Podero-Sapaio.jpg

It ‘s hard for me to fathom that the top wine from Bolgheri, Sassicaia that has been around since the 1940’s was released commercially for the first time in 1968 with huge accolades from day one is still only around $200 per bottle on release!  I know that’s not cheap but put it in perspective, you can’t find the top wines from Bordeaux or Napa Valley for $200 anymore- Try $500 to $1000 or more!!

Podere Sapaio is one of the newer producers from this region that I like to say is the Napa Valley or Bordeaux of Italy as they produce some of the best and biggest Cabernet Sauvignon and other Bordeaux varietal blends that can rival top blends of this type made anywhere in the world.  I will never forget a vertical tasting of Sassicaia back to 1979 vintage including the legendary 1985 vintage along with 1982, 1990 and others and these were all incredible like tasting through ten vintages of a first growth from Bordeaux or one of Napa Valley’s finest.

Our offering today has a 10+ year old wine that is at the same price as the newest release and the 2006 vintage was outstanding in Tuscany.  Older vintage wines from Italy are some of the best values in the world of collectible wines!!

It is easier to remember the off vintages in Tuscany the last few years than the good ones.  The only bad vintage in the last decade was 2002, and some had a bit of trouble with the heat in 2003.  Here is what Antonio Galloni had to say about 2006 in the Wine Advocate.  “The 2006s are big, full-bodied wines loaded with super-ripe fruit, but with plenty of stuffing underneath. In many cases the wines were made in the last month or so of the growing season, particularly in Chianti Classico, where warm daytime temperatures alternated with cool evenings. These conditions extended the grapes’ hang time and allowed the fruit to reach full phenolic ripeness while achieving maximum development of aromatics, acidity and structure. Growers had the luxury and peace of mind to harvest without being rushed. In a few spots producers reported harvesting into October, particularly for the Sangioveses. The 2006s will be tempting to drink young for their opulent fruit, but the best wines have the potential to age gracefully for many years. Since their initial release, many of the higher-end 2006s have begun to close down, so readers will want to approach these wines with caution. If the vintage has a weak spot it is the dry tannins that show up in a few wines where the warm conditions did not allow growers to achieve the level of sweetness and ripeness in the tannins that was evident in 2004.”

This wine is just starting to drink nicely, the 2006’s were shut down for a while but they are now starting to come out of their shell with dark plum and cherry fruit with notes of mocha, espresso, cured meats and sweet herbs coming out as this wine opens.  A big and chewy wine on the tongue with an array of dark berry fruit, tannins are still quite big but ripe and round with a bit of dryness at the end.  This wine could last another decade or more in your cellar or serve it tonight with at least an hour of decentering.  Finish 50+  Most Excellent

The new releases from Podere Sapaio:

2014 Podere Sapaio Volpolo Bolgheri

Price: $36.50    Your Price: $32.12

Quantity in Stock: 8

A blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot and 15% Petite Verdot aged for 14 months in barrique, they make 80,000 bottles on average. Started the winery in 1999 from Venice and thus Massimo had to start his own legacy as the family was not in the wine business. This area is the Bordeaux of Italy and this wine is reminescent of Bordeaux with lots of dark currand and cassis berry fruit, notes of cigar box spice and fresh dark earth, nice complexity on the nose some black peppery spice coming out on the second day. A big and chewy wine on the tongue with layers of dark earth, tobacco spice and a good amount of dark berry fruit, a bit tannic right now but has great balance and depth of fruit. Finish 45+ Excellent +

Podere Sapaio Superiore 2011

Price: $81.00       Sale $71.28          Case $827

A very hot year and this was a bit difficult for Massimo and the blend is the same as the 2010, a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20 Petite Verdot and 10% Cabernet Franc.  A good amount of fine herbs here on the nose still has a full bouquet of dark berry and currant like fruit, a host of dark earth, espresso, graphite and fresh plowed earth very well endowed bouquet of aromas.  This wine is very big on the tongue with a good amount of tannins here but lots of fruit, earth and spice, a big and layered wine with a long-layered finish, very well built this wine should be great in 5-10 years.  Finish 50+              Most Excellent

A bit about Poderi Sapaio:

There are those producers that believe that they are a reflection of their wine.  These are winemakers that cherish an idea and pursue it over the years, making mistakes, learning new tricks and with the help of new and old technology transform each vintages bounty into a unique expression of what their terroir has to offer.  This is what the owner of Poderi Sapaio, Massimo Piccin preaches that, “great wines can’t do without men’s great passion.”

It was the year 1999 in the Tuscan wine region of Bolgheri where Massimo’s passion for wine became Poderi Sapaio.  A 40-hectare farm that stretches gently between Castagneto Carducci and Bibbona.  The land extends over quaternary and flood deposits and consists of coarse sandy beds and draining calcareous soils.  It is here where some of Italy’s greatest Bordeaux style blends exist, wines conceived from the noble Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot varietals come together to new heights of quality like those found in the legendary Sassicaia and Ornellaia wines whose pedigree is known the world over today among wine lovers.

The two wines on the estate, Volpolo and Sapaio are produced under the guidance of the venerable Carlo Ferrini, an enologist of international fame.  Both wines are a blend of mainly Cabernet Sauvignon and other Bordeaux varietals.  The only difference with these wines is a selection of grapes, they are from the same vineyards and the two wines are a different interpretation of the characteristics of the vintage in two different expressions.

The Sapaio is a Bolgheri DOC Superiore and is required to age for at least 18 months in barrique and then another 8-10 months in bottle before released into the market.  Volpaio is aged for 14 months in barrique and then 6 months in the bottle before its release.

2007 Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia Bolgheri

Price: $295.00    Your Price: $259.60

Quantity in Stock: 2

(95 Points) The 2007 Sassicaia (Cabernet Sauvignon) explodes onto the palate with masses of rich, opulent fruit that caress the palate with gorgeous length and a seamless beauty that is hard to fully capture. Dark wild cherries, plums, spices, minerals and herbs develop in the glass. This is an especially bold, perhaps slightly uncharacteristic Sassicaia in its extroverted personality, but it is beautiful all the same. The inner perfume and sweetness carries through the long finish, where the sheer weight and glycerol of the fruit leaves a lasting impression. The 2007 is more than a worthy follow-up to the profound 2006. While it may lack that wine’s freshness, structure and potential longevity, the 2007 is immensely appealing today, and should drink beautifully pretty much out of the gate. That said, Sassicaia is always the most restrained of Bolgheri’s heavy hitters. This is a superb effort from Tenuta San Guido. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2037. eRobertParker.com # 0510, May 2010

2011 AIA Vecchia Sor Ugo Bolgheri

Price: $39.00    Your Price: $34.32

Quantity in Stock: 4

Ugo was the name of his great grandfather, who used to sell the skin of grapes to make grappa, Cabernet Sauvingon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petite Verdot, aged for 18 months in new French Barrique, the law says now at least 24 months and one year in oak. A very ripe and seductive vintage from Bolgheri with lots of dark cherry and cassis like fruit, dark earth, mocha, graphite and licorice spice. Incredible richness on the tongue with ripe berry fruit, a firm hand of tannins and a nice amount of earth and spice, a big wine but everything is in proportion here. Finish 45+ Most Excellent

2011 Antinori Guado Al Tasso Bolgheri

Price: $130.00    Your Price: $114.40

Quantity in Stock: 3

A wine of the aromatic intensity and silkiness of texture was something rather unexpected in such a hot vintage as the 2011. The Merlot gave sweetness of flavor, density of texture, and a very intense aroma of black fruit. The Cabernet Sauvignon contributed an exceptional richness along with additional black fruit aromas, liquorice, and not the slightest hint of greenness. Cabernet Franc added a magnificent balance and poise, smoothing the elevated tannic power of the other varieties and, finally, the Petit Verdot supplied that light touch of spice which completed the bouquet. This is a concentrated wine, one of great class and elegance, a wine capable of a very lengthy aging and positive evolution in the bottle.

2012 Tenuta Dell Ornellaia Le Serre Nuove Bolgheri

Price: $70.50    Your Price: $62.04

Quantity in Stock: 1

(92 points) "The 2012 Bolgheri Le Serre Nuove is a voluptuous and generous wine that bursts forth with wild-cherry aromas, blackberry, crème de cassis, oak spice and smoke. The blend of grapes this year is 52% Merlot, 28% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Cabernet Franc and 12% Petit Verdot. It awards pleasure and smoothness, thanks to its plump tannins and ripe fruit overtones. Le Serre Nuove shows the acidity and structure for ten years or more of cellar aging. "The Wine Advocate

2012 Tenuta Dell Ornellaia Bolgheri

Price: $238.50    Your Price: $209.88

Quantity in Stock: 1

“Ornellaia 2012 gives you an immediate sensation of pleasure that is both charming and engaging. Straight away, you can appreciate its deep ruby colour and warmth, as well as its bouquet of rich fruit and spice. The palate is well rounded, full, and generous, with glossy tannins and a velvety texture. It has all the luxuriance that distinguishes Ornellaia’s great vintages, but it conceals this richness behind an expansive and magnificent structure that concludes in a long-lasting finish. The 2012 growing season was characterized by an abundance of sunny, dry weather with some rainfall just before the harvest. The result was an even, consistent ripening process that in the end yielded this generous, full-bodied wine that is remarkably appealing and seductive. This is why we chose the word ‘l’Incanto’ (the Enchantment) to describe this vintage of Ornellaia.”

2013 Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia Bolgheri

Price: $235.00    Your Price: $206.80

Quantity in Stock: 7

(97 Points)  "The 2013 Bolgheri Sassicaia is released 30 years after the death of Tenuta San Guido founder, Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, and in the same year that his son Nicolò celebrated his 80th birthday. This is a wine of excellent execution, beautiful balance and seamless intensity. The bouquet opens slowly to reveal delicate aromas of dark fruit and integrated spice that build in steady strength. That forward momentum, which is so specific to Sassicaia, is what ultimately brings us confidence in the wine's remarkable ageing potential. The mouthfeel delivers freshness and power, but in measured doses, with long and silky persistence. The 2013 vintage should be set aside for ten more years. " The Wine Advocate
