“I hope that some day (we are at a point where in California) we rate the great wines based on the terroir." – Jess Jackson

The crown Jewel of the Jackson portfolio is all about single vineyard wines based on terroir and unfortunately, we have to reschedule the Lokoya collectors series wine tasting but we will have it back on the schedule over the summer.   I had winemaker Chris Carpenter ready to zoom in and introduce the wines so it will be in coordination with Chris so we can have the winemaker here if not in person at least virtually.

I’m starting to like these virtual wine tastings; we had a great time with Jean Charles Boisset on Wednesday.  If you missed the show you can check out the wines we tasted on the Wine Watch Instagram TV channel.  We will be hosting virtual tastings every Wednesday here at Wine Watch and we already have a great line-up of producers we will be interviewing and tasting wines lined up for June.

Wednesday, June 10th – Virtual Wine Tasting with one of the top wine from Chile Vina Vic, winemaker Cristian Vallejo will be here

Wednesday, June 17th - Virtual Wine Tasting with La Scolca Gavi di Gavi celebrating 100 years of this Iconic Italian Wine with special guest owner Chiara Soldati

Wednesday, June 24th - Virtual Wine Tasting with one of our best friends from Napa Valley Lewis Cellars with special Guest Randy Lewis

We will be offering a package of tasting wines for these events so you can follow along at home if you can’t make it to the store to be part of our studio audience.  We will also be selling seats to join us live if you want to get out and be part of the studio audience for these virtual tasting make the event both a real and virtual tasting.  We only taking ten reservations for the instore audience.  We will be sending an e-mail out to announce each event so you will have the details ahead of time.

We still have space for our 2015 vintage Brunello di Montalcino tasting Friday, May 29th if you want to get out and experience our new series of social distancing wine tastings.  We have only 14 spaces available for these events and the wine bar is not open for regular service so it will only be our group here for the event.

I have been following the Realm Cellars since they got started in 2002 and founder Juan Mercado visited the store many times in the early days to tasting me on new releases and keep me informed on what was happening with the new winery, etc.  Then, they started scoring 100 points in the Wine Advocate and the rest was history, they only make a few hundred cases of each wine so when you get those last two points 99 and 100 it makes the wines much easier to sell.  I think they sold out of the spring releases in 2016 sold out in just three hours!

So, when we received a big collection of Realm wines going back to the 2009 vintage there was no question that we would be hosting a Realm Cellars wine tasting as soon as humanly possible.  With the wine bar back open we are ready to see how Benoit and Juan did with the oldest selections from the cellar we picked up and with all the wines now 5 to 11 years old we have some of the top vineyard sites from Napa Valley as well as the blending skills of winemaker Benoit Touquette on display tonight.

Join us as we experience on of the top small producers from Napa Valley going back to the 2009 vintage.  Chef Toni Lampasone will be making a special meal to accompany the tasting wines and the fee for the event which includes dinner is $375 + tax, for reservations call 954-523-9463 or e-mail andy@winewatch.com.

A bit about Realm Cellars:

Realm Estate

Making wine at the very highest level has always been at the core of Realm Cellars. Through “these blessed plots” – vineyards that we own and sites that we carefully curate – our aim is nothing less than to illuminate and reflect the pinnacle of Napa Valley winegrowing. But our vision for what Realm can be encompasses more than creating fine wine. Securing an enduring place in the history of Napa Valley, that is also our aspiration.

Realm Cellars is a journey, built upon the dreams and ambitions of people willing to risk everything in the pursuit of beauty and quality. We have come a long way, but there is always so much further to go. Drawing on a shared ethos of entrepreneurship and relentless perfectionism, the Realm team will never be satisfied with the status quo. Every success - and every failure - is an opportunity to learn, adapt and evolve. With grit and determination, we strive to create a legacy greater than any one individual, one that will last for generations.

As we look to the future, we see only possibility. Our Estate in the Stags Leap District is our foundation, ensuring that Realm Cellars will be here for decades to come. There is much work ahead: a property to revitalize, vineyards to re-plant, a hospitality concept to be realized, and of course, wines to be made. As we map our course, our promise - to our customers, our growers, ourselves - is that Realm Cellars will never be static, never complacent. We will make our mark in the firm belief that the best is always yet to come.

When people visit Realm Cellars today, they don’t see what we see.

To them, Realm is an established winery in the Stags Leap District, with vineyards stretching from the Silverado Trail to the top of Wappo Hill, a modern wine cellar with shiny new equipment, and wines served in elegant glasses by a staff of professionals. They see something that’s smooth around the edges, they see success...

We see the road that got us here.

A rough road with potholes and unexpected turns. A grand experiment in risk taking, a string of fits and starts with more than its fair share of setbacks. We see going into debt, begging growers for fruit, working with borrowed equipment, harvesting until three AM, selling bottles one at a time. We see losing an entire vintage to fire, divorce, debt, more debt, near dissolution, and then finally, finally... a break, a rebirth. Even with our successes, we’ve never been short of challenges, and we’re certain that more lay ahead.

When we look at Realm today, we see it in its entirety, and that’s the story we present here. It’s not short and it’s not fluffy. It’s real. If you want to understand how we got to where we are today, this is the place to do it.

We closed on the Hartwell property on December 30, 2015, and a new chapter began for Realm Cellars. After thirteen years of making wine, we had a home. A winery and a vineyard -- an Estate! It kind of blew our minds. Benoit had worked on this property for over ten years, so it wasn’t exactly new to him. What was new to him - and to us – was the concept of owning the place. We went from renters to owners overnight, with all the responsibility that entails. When the reservoir got clogged with leaves from a heavy rain, Andy and the team went and shoveled it out. When the front gate wouldn’t open, Eden figured out how to get it fixed. When a falling branch knocked out the electricity, Juan called PG&E. There was no landlord, no property manager. And to be honest, there’d been some delayed maintenance.

February 2, 2016. The day of our Spring 2016 release. It was not a good day, to be honest. The wine sold out in three hours, but a lot of our long-time customers weren’t happy. We had never been a wait-listed, high-demand brand that sells out in a few hours; it caught us all by surprise. We knew there was momentum, but we didn’t anticipate how quickly people would be on the computer to order wine, and we didn’t allow enough time for the customers who would normally place an order. Talk about growing pains. We felt terrible. We did a video to apologize. And we changed our allocation approach.

We always knew Realm needed its own winery. It was the logical and necessary next step. We’d made wine at Boswell since 2007, and it had been a good home, but it was like sharing a kitchen - a little out of our control. We started looking around in 2014 and considered a lot of properties. But none of them were quite right. About the same time, Benoit proposed the idea of approaching Bob and Blanca Hartwell about the Hartwell Estate Vineyards property in Stags Leap. Benoit had made wine for the Hartwells since 2004, and had been viticulturist for the estate since 2008. He knew the property well and understood its potential. He also knew the family was thinking about downsizing their operation.

In the winter of 2014 Realm held its first annual Grower Dinner. It was the first time we were able to formally recognize and thank the growers who supply us with grapes. Some of these growers had been with us since the very beginning. They’d stuck with us through some pretty tough times. Without them, there would be no Realm.

All the Realm we have in the store:

2018 Realm Cellars Fidelio White Wine Napa

Price: $90.00       Your Price: $79.20            Quantity in Stock: 5

When we decided to make a Sauvignon Blanc in 2007, we wanted it to be a serious wine. Trouble was, we weren’t sure how to identify a great Sauvignon Blanc vineyard. We asked our friend Andy Erickson, who’s had a lot of experience with the varietal. “That’ll be easy for you,” he said. “A great Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard is going to make a great Sauvignon Blanc.” It makes sense; after all, Cabernet Sauvignon is a cross between Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Franc. What wasn’t so easy, however, was finding a great Cab vineyard planted to Sauvignon Blanc. That’s where Farella came in, the Coombsville vineyard that’s been the source of one of our favorite Cabernets since 2003. Farella has all these layers of volcanic tufa, decomposed rocks and ashy deposits – perfect for Cabernet, and as it turns out, Sauvignon Blanc. Farella has a few rows of SB on a slope in the northwest corner of the site, and after bugging Tom Farella for three years, we were finally able to secure the fruit in 2009. These grapes form the backbone of Fidelio (formerly known as Ibid), to which we add small amounts of Sauvignon Blanc from other sites for additional complexity. Fidelio is our version of a fine white Bordeaux: expansive on the palate, wonderfully complex, a beautifully structured and concentrated white.

2016 Realm Cellars Moonracer Napa

Price: $412.00    Sale Price: $350.00           Quantity in Stock: 3

(97 Points) A wine of tremendous depth and explosive energy, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Moonracer Realm Estate is just fabulous. Inky blue/purplish fruit, bittersweet chocolate, leather, licorice and cedar infuse the 2016 with tremendous character. Powerful and yet refined, the Moonracer is a winner in 2016. It is also one of my personal favorites, and that leads to wonder to what degree having complete control of farming is the reason this wine has an extra something the others just don’t.  (Jan 2020)  Vinous

2016 Realm Cellars The Falstaff Proprietary Red Napa

Price: $230.00    Sale Price: $195.00           Quantity in Stock: 2

(97 Points) Blended of 63% Cabernet Franc and 37% Cabernet Sauvignon from the To Kalon vineyard, the very deep garnet-purple colored 2016 The Falstaff is a little closed to begin, opening up to reveal red and black currants, blackberries and black cherries with floral wafts of roses and lilacs plus earthy hints of truffles, fertile loam and mossy bark. The palate is full-bodied, very firm and grainy with wonderful freshness and depth given by red fruit and mineral sparks, finishing long. This should age amazingly.  Wine Advocate Lisa Perrotti-Brown, October 29, 2018

2016 Realm Cellars The Bard Proprietary Blend Napa

Price: $183.00    Sale Price: $155.00           Quantity in Stock: 2

(98 Points) A blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot from 21 different lots from 11 different vineyards, the 2016 The Bard is very deep purple-black in color and sashays out of the glass with strikingly beautiful violets, warm cassis, star anise and chocolate mint notes with hints of wood smoke, tobacco and kirsch, with blackberry compote at the core. Full, muscular and built like a brick house with layer upon layer of black, blue and red fruits, it finishes very long and savory.  Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

2016 Realm Cellars Houyi Cabernet Sauvignon Napa

Price: $353.00    Sale Price: $300.00           Quantity in Stock: 4

You know a vineyard is pretty special when two winemakers like Brad Grimes (Abreu Vineyards) and Sam Kaplan (Arkenstone, Memento Mori, Nine Suns) advise you to check it out. We were asking around about Pritchard Hill – looking for a new single vineyard wine source -- and both Brad and Sam mentioned Houyi Vineyard. We hadn’t released a new single vineyard since 2005 (Dr. Crane). To find another one, the planets had to align. Obviously the site had to be capable of making a wine that can stand on its own, but it also had to be on par with yet stand out from our other SV wines. And the grower had to be really committed -- to the site, to us -- for the long term. We found it all in Houyi. Sitting nearly at the top of Pritchard Hill, Houyi is owned by the Chang family, who bought it in 2010. (You should check out their winery, Nine Suns.) It’s a fantastically complicated site – everything on Pritchard is – and the Changs farm it with no holds barred. They’re much more concerned with growing the best fruit they can than with trying to save a dime. Our kind of partner. We got our first fruit from the vineyard in 2013.

2014 Realm Cellars Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Napa MAGNUM

Price: $1024.00  Sale Price: $870.00           Quantity in Stock: 2

(99 Points) There are 400 cases of the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard, which is 96% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Petit Verdot. This comes from the backstreets of St. Helena and the site basically looks like a quarry with its extreme gravelly soils. The wine is made from clone 337, which may be my favorite of the Cabernet clones. As I have said before, this is a Mission Haut-Brion on steroids – an incredibly fabulous wine with notes of scorched earth, charcoal embers, blackberry and blueberry fruit, an almost endless mouthfeel with powerful fruit, but elegance as well as purity. A thoroughly flawless and seamless full-bodied wine with 30 years of upside, this is pure perfection. If you have the patience, try to hold off for a couple of years, as this is one of the more structured of the 2014s.  Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

2014 Realm Cellars Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Napa MAGNUM

Price: $825.00    Sale Price: $700.00           Quantity in Stock: 2

(97 Points) Another 100% Cabernet Sauvignon is the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer to Kalon Vineyard, coming from clones 4 and 337 from that famous first-growth Oakville vineyard of 90 acres. Remarkably, the Robert Mondavi winery still owns even larger portion of the To Kalon Vineyard, but certainly doesn’t exploit it to the extent that most purchasers of Beckstoffer To Kalon fruit do. This cuvée of 450 cases is closer to a Château Latour in a great vintage than you might believe, since it’s from Napa Valley. Notes of graphite, charcoal, blackcurrant liqueur and cedar wood are followed by a muscular, full-bodied wine with fabulous purity, a skyscraper-like texture and a long, long finish, with moderately sweet, ripe tannin. Give it several years of cellaring and drink it over the following three decades, as it is a fabulous effort. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

2014 Realm Cellars The Falstaff Proprietary Red Napa

Price: $200.00    Sale Price: $170.00           Quantity in Stock: 3

(97 Points) “Their blend of 40% Cabernet Franc, 40% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2014 The Falstaff (200 cases) emerges from multiple vineyards as well as top-notch terroirs, such as Larkmead, Houyi on Pritchard Hill, Weitz and Fortuna. This St.-Emilion-like blend is aged in about 85% new oak and is spectacular. Opaque purple in color with blackberry, creosote, incense and charcoal notes, a touch of spring flowers, blueberry and blackberry, the wine is full-bodied, multidimensional with terrific concentration, purity and palate presence. Drink it over then next 15-20+ years.”– Robert Parker  Wine Advocate

2014 Realm Cellars Moonracer Napa MAGNUM

Price: $706.00    Sale Price: $600.00           Quantity in Stock: 2

Moonracer. Realm Cellars’ first estate wine from our vineyard on Wappo Hill in the Stags Leap District. It is said this elevated site was important to the Wappo Native Americans as it provided the tribe with a central lookout from which to identify intruders and such. The Wappos, though small in number, were known for their bravery, strength and athleticism. Jack London, who wrote about the curious inter-tribal races that took place during full moons, noted that the Wappos often won. Thus Moonracer, an oblique reference to the earliest inhabitants of the place Realm calls home.

The Cabernet Sauvignon-based wine is composed of the finest lots from the vineyard. Winemaker Benoit Touquette has a lot to choose from, as the site, with its multiple blocks, elevations, facings and diverse soils, has character in spades. Moonracer bears the unmistakable mark of this stimulating vineyard, as well as the Stags Leap District. Strong, powerful, yet elegant, with refined tannins and plenty of depth. What Benoit calls “intellectual.” “It’s a wine that will appeal to both international and American palates. It walks the line, combining characteristics typical of northern and southern Napa Valley. It’s got plenty of fruit but also layered flavors, depth and complexity.”

(95 Points) "The 2014 The Tempest, a blend of 62% Merlot, 33% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petit Verdot is a 500-case cuvée aged in about 65% new Taransaud and Darnajou French oak cooperage. A beautiful nose of cedar wood, chocolate, spice box, forest floor and black and red fruits jumps from the glass of this dense, opulent, voluptuously textured and full-bodied wine with terrific purity, can be drunk now, or cellared for up to another 15 or more years." - Robert Parker, robertparker.com (Dec 30, 2016)

The Absurd stems from a simple yet fantastically complex proposition: it’s the very best wine that Realm Cellars produces. It began in 2005, a big, gorgeous vintage that gave us an abundance of glorious fruit. With no rules, no restrictions, we created what we called the super blend, the best of the best. In 2005, it so happened that the blend was 38% Petit Verdot. We thought that was kind of absurd. The name stuck, though the meaning has morphed into a wine that is ‘absurdly good.’ We only make The Absurd in certain years, when there is enough fruit to make this small blend without impacting the other Realm wines. The Absurd could be one varietal, it could be five. It could come from one vineyard lot, it could come from a dozen. Each time we make The Absurd we start with a blank canvas. Our sole guideline is our palate. Our sole aim is the best Napa Valley wine of the vintage.

"This blessed plot, this earth, this realm..." Immortal lines from William Shakespeare’s King Richard II, the source of Realm’s – and this wine’s – name. We’ve made this Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated blend since 2003, our tribute to the great wines of Bordeaux’s Left Bank. We consider The Bard to be the quintessential wine of Realm: a dense, weighty and concentrated wine that year in and year out showcases the very best Cabernet Sauvignon of Napa Valley. Beckstoffer To Kalon and Dr. Crane, Blair Vineyard, Weitz Vineyard, Fortuna Vineyard and Beckstoffer Orchard have all found a place in The Bard. While the composition of the wine varies from year to year, Cabernet Sauvignon typically comprises over 70% of the blend, joined by lesser percentages of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and/or Petit Verdot.

“When drinking water, remember the source:” an old Chinese proverb that could apply to wine as easily as water. Located in what used to be St. Helena’s “Chinatown” in the 1920’s, Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard now sits in a residential neighborhood on the west side of town, an unassuming site bordered by an old riverbed and a rock quarry. The vineyard was originally planted in 1858 by San Franciscan Dr. George Belden Crane; today it is owned by Andy Beckstoffer, who replanted it to multiple clones of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc in 1998. With extremely well-drained, gravelly soils, Beckstoffer Dr. Crane is undoubtedly one of the finest vineyards in St. Helena, and its wines are unmistakable. “You know it when you smell it,” says Winemaker Benoit Touquette. “Dr. Crane has everything you look for -- minerality, complexity, excellent fruit definition, good tannin structure; a complete wine with many layers.” Realm’s Dr. Crane is predominantly (@ 95%) Cabernet Sauvignon Clone 6 blended with a small amount of Petit Verdot.

To Kalon: \TO ka∙lon\ noun: the ideal of physical and moral beauty especially as conceived by the philosophers of classical Greece.

It was also the ancient Greeks who first said that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. If that is true, then To Kalon Vineyard is aptly named, considered by countless people over many decades as the preeminent vineyard of Napa Valley. We’ve been fortunate to work with grapes from Beckstoffer To Kalon since we began making wine in 2002. Comprised of a portion of the historical To Kalon vineyard planted in 1868, the 89-acre parcel was acquired by Andy Beckstoffer in 1993 and replanted to multiple clones of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Sitting on the west side of the Napa Valley’s Oakville appellation, Beckstoffer To Kalon grapes are only made available to a small number of boutique wine producers, who, quite simply, fashion them into some of the highest quality wines Napa Valley has to offer. “The wines from To Kalon are so dense, so opulent,” says Winemaker Benoit Touquette. “When you look at it, it’s hard to put a finger on what makes this vineyard so special. But in the wine, its beauty is unmistakable.” Realm’s Beckstoffer To Kalon Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced from several blocks planted to Clones 4 and 337. The wine is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon.

Our Cabernet Franc-dominated proprietary blend takes its name from one of Shakespeare’s most vividly-drawn comedic characters, a knight of formidable appetite, a Joker with spirit and wit. Cabernet Franc is not widely grown in Napa Valley, and Falstaff was added to the portfolio only after we secured grapes that met our standards for the wine. Kenefick Ranch in Calistoga and Weitz Vineyard and Fortuna Vineyard in Oakville are typical vineyard sources. Modeled after the Garagiste wines of Bordeaux’s Right Bank, Falstaff can be counted on for an ethereal, perfumed nose – botanicals and potpourri – a hallmark of the Cabernet Franc varietal. While composition varies by vintage, Falstaff is predominately Cabernet Franc, with Cabernet Sauvignon playing a supporting role.

2009 Realm Cellars The Tempest Proprietary Red Napa

The Tempest – a famous play, a violent storm, and the name of our Merlot-based blend, fashioned after the great wines of Pomerol in Bordeaux. The Tempest was the first proprietary wine Realm released, so named for the “perfect” storm of three grape varietals that became available at the same time, from the same vineyard, in 2002 -- the year of our tumultuous beginning. Though our equipment was borrowed and the winery we occupied unfinished, our grapes were sound that year – beautiful in fact – and the resulting wine reflected a fierce determination to brave the storm. The Tempest is still made with beautiful grapes, from vineyards such as Beckstoffer Orchard and Dr. Crane, as well as Blair Vineyard in Calistoga. Predominantly Merlot, with lesser amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot depending on vintage, The Tempest is a roiling cauldron of lush, bright, red fruit – a wine that shows what Merlot can be in the right hands, from the right vineyards.

2009 Realm Cellars Farella Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Napa

Price: $118.00    Sale Price: $100.00           Quantity in Stock: 2

Tucked up against the southern Vaca Mountain range in Napa’s Coombsville AVA, Farella Vineyard features layers of volcanic tufa, red decomposed rock and ashy deposits from ancient landslides, vast geologic episodes that literally turned this vineyard on its head. Oddly enough, we discovered the site in 2003 when the owners, Frank and Tom Farella, placed an ad in Wine Country Classifieds announcing the availability of Cabernet Sauvignon that had previously gone to Opus One. We were knocking on the Farella’s door the same day and immediately fell in love with the site, and Farella has been part of our portfolio ever since. The fruit for Farella comes from a high point in the vineyard, a block that Tom Farella refers to as “rockpile” because of the preponderance of stone and gravel in the soil. This block is bathed in afternoon sunlight during the growing season, and the wine – concentrated and beautifully-structured --consistently shows a mix of red and black fruits with spice and mineral overtones. Farella is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, comprising Clones 4 and 8.

Farella Vineyard is a fantastically complex site in the foothills of the Vaca Mountain range in the cool, southeastern corner of Napa Valley. The vineyard is divided into numerous blocks with elevations ranging between 300 and 500 feet. Varying slopes create distinct microclimates and soil compositions, and the vineyard’s diversity is suitable to growing Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec, Syrah, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay. Thirty acres of untouched oak woodland adds to the biodiversity and breathtaking beauty of this special site.
