Pre Valentines Rose Champagne and Pinot Noir Wine Tasting in the Wine Cave Saturday February 9th 7:30pm

One of my most exciting Saturday nights was just me and a bottle of wine and a crochet book.

Jessica Pare

I can guarantee you this tasting will be more exciting than a crochet book.  Can you think of a better way to start this Valentine's weekend than a tasting featuring over 30 different types of pink tiny bubbles and Pinot Noir.  We will be featuring a range of method champenoise style rose sparkling wines as well as Pinot Noir reds that are sure to get you off to a good start with your significant other on this Valentines weekend.

We will be setting up stations throughout the wine cave with over 20 different selections and chef Toni Lampasone will be making a few tasty treats to accompany the tiny pink bubbles and Pinot Noir.  The fee for this event is $65 + tax and we are limited to 50 tasters this evening, for reservations call 954-523-9463 or e-mail andy@winewatch.com.

What I Drank Yesterday: Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte

image016_1087.jpg

Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte was bought by the Cathiards in 1990, Florence and Daniel who met and fell in love in 1965 on the French national ski team.   They immediately began to invest in the property and turn it into one of the top names in Pessac Leognan. The estate is now 100% organic and 1/2 of the vines are biodynamic.  They have 78 hectares of vines, 11 are white.   They are the first winery to separate the CO2 and recycle it they have a unique process the cover the vat with a hat and then link it to a pipe and the CO2 looks like white powder.  They use some of it in the fertilizers and they sell the rest to the cosmetic industry, they call this circular economy they also do all their own compost and they grow their own rootstock keeping the DNA of their own vines.

The 2014 vintage is a classic plus, somewhere in between a vintage like 2011 and 2012 very pure fruit fresh.  In 2103 they used twice the amount of pickers and they only had one day to harvest the Merlot as the Black Sunday a huge rainstorm came and after that there was no reason to pick, less body but nice wines for early drinking low production.

2014 Le Petit Haut Lafitte Pessac Leognan

Price: $45.75

A blend of 60/40 Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot from 25-year-old vines or less.   A nice amount of ripe currant and plum fruit with notes of coffee and some gravelly earth, notes of coco/mocha and more coming out as the wine opens.  A delicious wine very forward and precocious with fine tannins and that cigar box spice with fresh minerality showing through the finish.  Finish 40+      Excellent

2012 Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte Pessac Leognan

Price: $112.50

2012 is a vintage with a different story one of the longest harvests ever at Smith Haut Lafitte they finished on October 21st.  The vines started very late, the spring did not come until summer, this longer season with a very dry cold spring gave the wine beautiful aromatics, dark currant berry fruit, notes of cigar box spice and a good amount of earth here classic Pessac with that gravelly mineral note.  The ripeness of the Merlot was very good, a blend of 40% Merlot, 50% Cabernet Sauvignon with a bit of Cabernet Franc and petit Verdot.  A very round and balanced vintage with good immediate appeal more red fruit.  A good amount of ripe juicy fruit here on the tongue with fine tannins and nice structure, balance not a blockbuster vintage/  Drinking nicely now but should age for a few decades in your cellar easily.  Finish 45+          Most Excellent

2011 Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte Pessac Leognan

They use the most modern equipment to harvest and they will pass through the vineyard multiple times to get the grapes as perfectly ripe as possible and they use drone technology to get the grapes as close to perfect as possible they also use electronic sorting, this 2011 is a more classic style vintage with a nice mineral character to the bouquet flint and a bit more black fruit currant berry fruit character a higher profile and more dense than the 2012 which is more fruity.  A big wine with some tannins here coming through on the finish, long and layered with a good hand of fresh earth and spice coming through on the finish.  Finish 50+  Only 8000 cases of grand vin and 2000 cases of Petit Haut          Most Excellent +
