We have only a few weeks left of tastings before we must get serious about selling wine here and close the Wine Bar for private parties but we have decided to reopen on New Year’s Eve for our first “Once in a Lifetime” Big Bottle Party!  This years’ New Year’s Eve party starts with a 6-liter bottle of 1995 Dom Perignon and the outline for our drinking itinerary is now up on the web! 


 


I just realized that we have no events planned at the Wine Bar next week so with time running short on our drinking festivities in 2017 I decided to put an event on the calendar for next Thursday night.  The subject of this tasting was easy to come by as we just acquired a dozen older vintage Bordeaux in OWC.  The Original Wooden Case makes the wines more valuable to some collectors but we have priced these wines to sell and that is why we are drinking at least one bottle of each wine before they leave the store.  If you notice on the amounts available they are all listed as 11 bottles because we are drinking one of the 12 from the OWC this evening.

(95 points) I have had perfect bottles of this cuvee, but, perplexingly, the bottles from my cellar tend to be broodingly backward and require plenty of coaxing. This huge wine is, in many ways, just as massive as Leoville Barton, but it possesses a greater degree of elegance as well as unreal concentration. Classic lead pencil, cassis, kirsch, cedar, and spice characteristics are abundant in both the nose and full-bodied flavors. The tannins are still there, and, at least from my cellar, this 1982 does not appear to have changed much in the last 10-12 years. (92-94 points) Tasted wonderful in October 2000. A meaty rich ripe nose of cassis, mulberry and cherry. Full-bodied and expansive structure. Approachable with layers of strawberries and red fruits. A rich voluptuous Barton that should be ready in 2-3 yrs. Then blind in April 2005. A very attractive nose with a slight under-ripeness that lends it freshness and vitality. The palate is well-balanced with toasty new oak. But quite backward compared to others with a dense sweet, chocolate tinged finish. Winemaker's Notes:  The Château believes in a very long fermentation and in replanting only when absolutely to maintain a good average of old vines. (93 Points) A brilliant performance by Hubert de Bouard, the 2001 Angelus (6,250 cases) is a more restrained and delineated version of the 2000. It has shed much of its tannin, and seems far more evolved and open-knit than I thought prior to bottling. Its deep purple color is followed by a rich nose of creosote, charcoal, blackberries, plums, cassis, and espresso roast. Elegant, medium-bodied, and rich, with a measured ripeness and moderate structure in the pure, nicely proportioned finish, it is less massive than either the 2000 or 2003, yet is also beautifully put together. (95 Points) One cannot say enough about the labors of proprietor Alfred Tesseron, who has personally overseen the dramatic increase in quality of the wines at Pontet-Canet which started in a significant manner with 1994. This is a classic Pauillac-styled wine (meaning oodles of cassis flavors), as one might expect from a vineyard on the plateau of Pauillac, across the street from Mouton-Rothschild.


One of the great successes of the vintage and certainly one of the most profound Pontet-Canets made over the last decade is the 2003. Deep purple to the rim with a glorious nose of scorched earth, black currant jam, smoke, licorice, and roasted meats, it is full-bodied, incredibly powerful, dense, with low acidity but high tannin, broad-shouldered, and savory. This is a stunning, pure, classic Pontet-Canet that should be at its best between 2010 and 2035. Wine Advocate #164, Apr 2006
