“My only regret in life is that I did not drink more wine.”

 Ernest Hemingway

I am trying to drink as much wine as I can before I leave this earth!  We never know when that is and when one of the youngest members of the Wine Watch staff had a stroke on Saturday night, we were shocked and reminded that it doesn’t matter how old you are, things happen in life that are beyond your control.

We wish Steven Hawkins aka High School a speedy recovery and at age 31 the doctor said it was probably due to being dropped on his head to many times at Jiu Jitsu class.  We will raise a glass to him every night until his return.  I nick named him High School many years ago because he started working here in High School and for the first two years he helped out over the holiday season I did not remember his name therefore he was called High School.  Steven has become a valuable member of the Wine Watch staff and is resting safely at Holy Cross Hospital for the moment.  Get well soon High School you have many more great bottles ahead of you!!

The show must go on and we have three more tastings this week at the Wine Bar.  We are only open to the public for regular service in the Wine Bar Friday and Saturday night this week.  I have included the menu at the end of this e-mail for those of you that can’t make the three tastings we have on Thursday, Friday and Saturday night.

First Growths of Pauillac Bordeaux Tasting

If this is the last Bordeaux tasting that I ever attend I will be happy as long as the 1982 Chateau Latour shows up it is the greatest wine I have ever had from Bordeaux.  We have one seat left!

Next week we are back to our normal schedule of Thursday, Friday and Saturday night at the Wine Bar and we have three incredible tastings along with being open for regular service in the Wine Bar all three nights!

We have been following Duckhorn Winery from the very beginning and when it sold in July 2007 to GI Partners, a private equity firm at a price believed to be over $250 million we were happy for Dan Duckhorn and his partners they had a good run and got out at the right time, just before the market crashed in 2008.  Usually this type of consolidation in the wine business is not a good thing but in this case the wines continued to be excellent and they continued to acquire vineyards as well as small wineries to add the portfolio to compliment the already existing brands.

Then, the company was sold to another private equity firm, TSG Consumer Partners, in 2016 and we were concerned for the continued reputation of this legendary brand but the feather in the cap came when Duckhorn winery’s 2014 Three Palm Merlot was named the #1 wine in the Wine Spectator top 100 list in 2017.  Then when they bought Kosta Brown in 2018 we knew that this company was interested in quality first and we are happy to say that Duckhorn Winery has not lost a step.

Join us as we welcome our good friend Cary Combine to host a tasting featuring the entire portfolio of the Duckhorn wine group including the 2014 vintage Duckhorn Three Palms Merlot along with a wine from each winery that this group represents.  The fee for this tasting is $125 + tax, for reservations call 954-523-9463 or e-mail andy@winewatch.com.

A bit about Duckorn Winery:

Co-founded by Dan and Margaret Duckhorn in 1976, Duckhorn Vineyards has spent forty years establishing itself as one of North America’s premier producers of Napa Valley wines. From its modest inaugural vintage of 800 cases of Cabernet Sauvignon and 800 cases of Merlot in 1978, to its addition of Sauvignon Blanc in 1982, Duckhorn Vineyards has crafted a tradition of quality and excellence that continues today.

Since the inaugural vintage of our Decoy Napa Valley Red Wine more than a quarter century ago, Decoy has taken an important place in the Duckhorn Portfolio of wines. With a reputation for delivering great quality at a remarkable price, Decoy has established a loyal following for its distinctive style, which emphasizes ready-upon-release wines that are capable of expressing their full charm and complexity in their youth. Building on this foundation, Decoy has evolved from being a single wine that supported the Duckhorn Vineyards brand to being a renowned winery in its own right. Today, in addition to the Decoy Red, the Decoy lineup includes a Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Zinfandel, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc—all of which are Sonoma County appellation-designated and highlight Decoy’s commitment to producing attractively priced wines made from exceptional vineyard sources.

1985

The first Decoy Red Blend is made at Duckhorn Vineyards. This exceptional wine quickly establishes a loyal following for its great quality, remarkable price, and its distinctive style, which expresses its full charm and complexity in its youth.

2007

Decoy unveils a new label featuring a decoy carved by Richard “Fresh-Air Dick” Janson (1872–1951) during the 1930s. Janson was a premier carver whose decoys are the most recognizable of all Pacific Coast carvings. Artist Michael Allard of Zimbabwe created a painting of this Pintail duck from the original carving. While still incorporating key elements of the original packaging—most notably the Decoy carving artwork—the new design offers a warmer, more premium aesthetic.

2008

Decoy evolves from being a single, second-label wine supporting the Duckhorn Vineyards brand to being its own focused winery, with the creation of an expanded portfolio of wines that, in addition to the Decoy Red Blend, includes a Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Zinfandel, and Pinot Noir. Grapes for the enhanced Decoy lineup come from a mix of Estate vineyards and top independent growers.

2009

We add two incredible white wines, a Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, to our Decoy portfolio.

2012

After several years of working with its sought-after grapes, we acquire the renowned Ridgeline Vineyard in the Alexander Valley appellation—Sonoma County’s best region for growing Bordeaux varietals. Located on Oak Mountain, Ridgeline Vineyard is a steep mountainside vineyard with elevations ranging from 100 to nearly 2,000 feet. This coveted fruit is used for our Decoy Cabernet Sauvignon, Decoy Merlot and flagship Decoy Red Wine.

2013

We acquire another spectacular Alexander Valley Estate property, the Brownell Vineyard. Offering an ideal counterpoint to the mountain fruit of Ridgeline, Brownell is a beautiful valley-floor vineyard with ancient gravel and sand alluvial soils. In this warm mid-valley location, the fruit gets beautifully ripe, adding richness and depth to our Decoy Cabernet Sauvignon.

2014

To support the phenomenal success of our expanded lineup of Decoy wines, we acquire a state-of-the-art winemaking facility in Hopland. Located just north of Sonoma County, our Hopland Winery is a winemaker’s dream that enables our talented winemaking team to have an unprecedented level of control over every aspect of our luxury winemaking processes.

2016

Tyson Wolf is named the winemaker for Decoy. A gifted winemaker, and an expert working with multiple grape varieties, Tyson is also known for his masterful blending. Under Tyson’s guidance, Decoy makes its debut vintage of California Rosé.

In the world of fine wine, Josh Jensen is a legend. An innovator and a pioneer, Josh has been named the San Francisco Chronicle’s “Winemaker of the Year,” honored as a “Rockstar of Wine” at World of Pinot Noir, and has graced the cover of Wine Spectator. More than just being universally respected by his peers, Josh played a pivotal role in establishing Pinot Noir as one of North America’s great varietal wines. In doing so, he also built Calera into one of the world’s most revered wineries. Beloved by connoisseurs, Calera has been honored by Wine & Spirits as one of the “Top 100 Wineries in the World” four times, with Robert Parker calling Calera “California’s Romanée-Conti.”

For those who know Josh’s story, there is a particular aptness in the compassion to Romanée-Conti, In the early 1970s, after studying at Yale and Oxford, Josh was exploring Europe, when a desire to try his hand at vineyard work led him to Romanée-Conti, where he worked harvest. Inspired by his experience at the famed Pinot Noir estate, the following year he deepened his understanding of great Pinot Noir at Domaine Dujac.

Returning to the United States, he began a quest to create a style of Pinot Noir that had not previously been realized in the United States. To achieve this goal, he spent the next two years searching for land rich in limestone, like the vineyards he most admired in Burgundy. In 1974, he found what he was looking for on the steep slopes of Mount Harlan, a 3,278-foot peak in the Gavilan Mountains that divide Monterey and San Benito counties. The following year, while living in a trailer on the remote property with his wife and small child, Josh founded Calera, the Spanish world for “limekiln.” There, with no paved road, electricity or phone, he began planting his first three estate vineyards: Jensen, Reed and Selleck.

In 1978, these vineyards yielded their first small crop, resulting in Calera’s debut trio of vineyard-designate Pinot Noirs. For wine enthusiasts, Josh’s early Pinot Noirs were a revelation, offering a new level of structure and sophistication in New World Pinot Noir. In the years that followed, Josh established his own Calera Pinot Noir clone, and planted three more small vineyards on Mt: Harlan: Mills, de Villiers and Ryan, as well as small blocks of Chardonnay, Viognier and Aligoté. Josh also began working with some of the top vineyards on California’s majestic Central Coast to make Calera’s Central Coast wines, which include Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Viognier and a Vin Gris of Pinot Noir. Believing in the uniqueness of Mt. Harlan, Josh also worked to establish a Mt. Harlan American Viticultural Area (AVA), which he achieved in 1990. As a result, like Domaine Romanée-Conti, Calera is one of the only wineries in the world, and one of only two in North America, with its own AVA.

Throughout it all, Josh has followed his own uncompromising vision, never chasing trends, and always striving for the extraordinary. Because of this, Calera’s wines are venerated by collectors for their purity and elegance, each one a liquid study in terroir. Through his innovation and leadership, he helped to redraw the map of California wine, earning the Central Coast accolades as one of the world’s great cool-climate wine regions. While doing so, he also catapulted America Pinot Noir into conversations about the North America’s greatest wines, and by doing so helped to lay the foundation for the modern Pinot Noir boom.

2016 Paraduxx Napa Valley Cab Blend

Price: $30.00       Sale $26.40

Every great tradition begins as an innovation. Paraduxx was created to allow the Duckhorn Vineyards' winemakers the freedom to explore other styles without detracting from the winery's focus on Bordeaux varietals. In 1994, Paraduxx sourced 4 tons of Zinfandel from the 100-year-old vines of Napa's Korte Vineyard and blended it with Duckhorn Vineyards' own estate Cabernet Sauvignon, along with smaller amounts of Merlot and Petite Sirah, creating the first Paraduxx vintage.

1994

Paraduxx is founded by Dan and Margaret Duckhorn as the only Napa Valley winery devoted exclusively to making Napa Valley blends. Though taking inspiration from the great red blends of the world, Paraduxx is also committed to making wines that reflect the character and charm of Napa Valley. The debut vintage offers a unique blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Merlot and Petite Sirah. Artfully crafted by founding winemaker Tony Biagi, Paraduxx’s wines are made to appeal to the modern palate. The visionary blends of the Paraduxx quickly establish a reputation for their bold, expressive character and their food-friendly sophistication.

Believing in the importance of combining fruit from the finest Napa Valley winegrowers with our own Estate grapes, we acquired the 39-acre Rector Creek Vineyard in Yountville. Located along the Silverado Trail, Rector Creek Vineyard will later become home to our Paraduxx Winery. Rector Creek’s unique climate, combined with its rocky alluvial soils, create ideal growing conditions for Paraduxx’s first estate plantings of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Zinfandel and Cabernet Franc.

Goldeneye Winery was founded in 1996, years before the Pinot Noir boom that has reshaped the landscape of California winemaking. But the genesis for Goldeneye goes back even further. In 1990, after fifteen years of making world-class Bordeaux-varietal wines, Dan and Margaret Duckhorn embraced their growing love of Pinot Noir. Their vision for Goldeneye was simple, though not easy. They wanted to found a winery that could make a terroir-inspired expression of California Pinot Noir of equal stature to the acclaimed Merlots they had pioneered at Duckhorn Vineyards in Napa Valley. For Pinot Noir, the Duckhorns believed that true greatness would be found on the cool-climate edges of modern California viticulture and found what they were looking for in the Anderson Valley.

After nearly fifteen years of making world-class Bordeaux-varietal wines, Dan and Margaret Duckhorn embrace their growing love of Pinot Noir. They begin looking for the ideal winegrowing region where they can make a terroir-inspired expression of California Pinot Noir of equal stature to the acclaimed Napa Valley wines they pioneered at Duckhorn Vineyards. They believe that true Pinot Noir greatness will be found on the cool-climate edges of modern California viticulture where the grape can express varietal purity and an intimate sense of place.

Our first wine, a 1990 Pinot Noir, is released in 1993 under the Duckhorn Vineyards’ Decoy label. The grapes for this wine came from the Russian River Valley appellation, one of the many growing regions we explored while searching for the ideal home for Goldeneye.

After six years of experimentation, and long before the Pinot Noir boom that reshaped the landscape of California winemaking, Goldeneye is founded in the Anderson Valley with the purchase of an 80-acre ranch that includes a small winery and vineyard. Located at the headwaters of the Navarro River, we name our first Estate property Confluence Vineyard. With ideal clay soils and a marine-influenced climate offering long, mild days and cooling fog and winds, the Anderson Valley appellation has all of the ingredients for producing world-class Pinot Noir.

Our first vines are planted at Confluence Vineyard in the spring of 1997, providing us a modest 12 acres of Estate Pinot Noir. Committed to the careful growth of our estate program, we begin a long-term search for other ideal vineyard sites. In the fall, we pick our 7 tons of Estate fruit from Confluence Vineyard, resulting in 375 cases of handcrafted Goldeneye Pinot Noir.

After a decade of planning, research, and experimentation, we release our debut Goldeneye Pinot Noir to an enthusiastic response from consumers, press, and trade. Building on our commitment to developing a world-class Estate program, we also acquired our second property—Gowan Creek, a 70-acre vineyard that will eventually become the home ranch for our Goldeneye Winery.

We purchase The Narrows Vineyard. Situated on a narrow ridgetop at the northernmost tip of the valley, The Narrows is a historic mountain ranch planted with highly prized mature Pinot Noir vines. Just 10 miles from the Mendocino Coast, The Narrows is affected by strong cooling marine influences. These extreme conditions provide the perfect setting for growing grapes of great intensity, resulting in a complex Pinot Noir that embodies the vineyard’s wild beauty and natural intensity.

We celebrate our 10th harvest in Anderson Valley with a limited-production anniversary bottling. Made from our ten finest barrels of Pinot Noir, we name this special wine Ten Degrees—a name that pays homage to the fact that even though our estate vineyards span a modest eight miles, they often display a temperature variance of as much as 10 degrees from The Narrows Vineyard in the cool “deep end” to our Confluence Vineyard in the south.

After two years as assistant winemaker, Katey Larwood is named Goldeneye winemaker. To make wines that are true to the Anderson Valley, Katey and her team ferment more than 200 small lots of Pinot Noir each vintage to make wines that balance depth and energy, with the sophistication of exceptional Anderson Valley Pinot Noir. “This region yields remarkably distinctive wines. They are lush and complex, with an almost rustic grace. My role is to convey what makes this region so special, while honoring the traditions that have made Goldeneye one of North America’s great Pinot Noir wineries.”

2017 Migration Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast

Price: $27.00       Sale $23.76

2016 Migration Chardonnay Sonoma Coast

Price: $36.00       Sale $31.68

Embodying the lush elegance of cool-climate California winegrowing, Migration’s exploration of the great Burgundian varietals began in the Anderson Valley, and is dedicated to going beyond its original home and exploring Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from California's finest cool-climate appellations.

"Traditionally at Duckhorn," says winemaker Dana Epperson, "the character of a particular wine is deeply connected to a specific place or region. Migration offers a different paradigm. We are starting with a clearly defined style and exploring how that style can be expressed in different winegrowing regions, which is a fascinating prospect."

The centerpiece of our Migration winegrowing program is our Running Creek Vineyard. Located on River Road, in the heart of the magnificent Russian River Valley, this spectacular Estate vineyard features 70 acres of Pinot Noir vines, and 20 acres of Chardonnay. But in our search to make compelling single-vineyard offerings, we have traveled up and down the coast, visiting more than 40 of the finest cool-climate Chardonnay and Pinot Noir vineyards choosing a select few to work with.

2015 Canvasback Red Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon

Price: $30.00       Sale $26.40

Longwinds Vineyard was planted in 2014 under the guidance of Winemaker Brian Rudin and Vineyard Manager Dick Boushey. A past “Grower of the Year” honoree by both the Washington Association of Wine Grape Growers and the Washington State Grape Society, Dick also worked closely with the Duckhorn Portfolio team to select the site, which is situated just above Col Solare (the vineyard partnership between Tuscany’s Marchesi Antinori and Washington’s Ste. Michelle Wine Estates).

Longwinds features 13.5 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon and 4.5 acres of Merlot, with the Cabernet grown in the rockier, exposed soils at the top of the vineyard, and the Merlot grown near the bottom, where the soils have higher water-holding capacity. As an additional benefit of the region’s thin, pest-free soils, all of the vines at Longwinds Vineyard are own-rooted.

“With our Longwinds Vineyard, we’ve quite literally put down roots here on Red Mountain,” says Brian. “This vineyard is an essential part of our long-term vision for Canvasback, and our goal of making a great terroir-driven wine from one of the world’s finest Cabernet Sauvignon winegrowing regions.”

Longwinds Vineyard (2013) Located near the top of Red Mountain, Longwinds Estate Vineyard is situated above the frost zone and features gently rolling slopes and an ideal southwest exposure. The vineyard’s thin, windblown Warden series sandy loam soils are above a basalt layer deep enough to allow the vines to fully take root. Because the soils are so thin, the irrigation can be tailored to regulate growth, which in turn yields perfectly ripe and beautifully concentrated fruit. At the same time, with diurnal swings of 40+˚, the grapes preserve excellent natural acidity.
