Canard Vineyard Napa Valley Wine Tasting with Special Guest Managing Director Adam Fox Thursday, January 12th 7:30pm

"By making this wine vine known to the public, I have rendered my country as great a service as if I had enabled it to pay back the national debt."

~ Thomas Jefferson

If only a modern-day politician could contribute as much to the quality of our life as the late great Thomas Jefferson.  He was one of the first advocates of wine in the United States and he is one of the reasons why we have the greatest selection of wines from all around the world in the U.S. today.  So, remember...no matter how bad it gets, we still have the best selection of the world’s greatest wines at the most competitive prices in the world here in the U.S. of A.

Speaking of GREAT wines from the U.S.A…. Napa Valley is the premier wine growing region in this country for Bordeaux varietals and they have the highest prices of any wines in this country.  I always say that Napa Valley has the most over-priced wines in the world but there are still a few great small producers that are family owned and reasonably priced.

When the managing director for Canard Winery Adam Fox stopped in a year ago to taste me on his new releases I was very impressed as they were all Excellent, even the Zinfandel!!  They are all from the family’s vineyards in Napa Valley some of which are 100+ years old!  I liked the wines so much I told Adam “PLEASE let me know when you come back so we can host a wine tasting with these Most Excellent wines, they need to be introduced to our “Wine Drinking People”.

Join us as we welcome Adam Fox to South Florida to host the first Napa Valley wine tasting of 2023.  This tasting is limited to 16 tasters and the fee for this event which includes dinner is $250 + tax. For reservations call 954-523-9463 or e-mail andy@winewatch.com.

CANARD VINEYARDS NAPA VALLEY WINE TASTING

WITH SPECIAL GUEST MANAGING DIRECTOR ADAM FOX

Thursday, January 12

7:30 PM

2021 Canard Cuvee Des Cendres Rosé Napa

Price: $41.25     Sale $36.30

Cuvée des Cendres (“From the ashes”) represents the unwavering resolve of the California farmers, vintners and winemakers who have faced so many devastating fires over the last few years. In our case, it is not a phoenix rising, but a duck. After all we are Canard Vineyard. We lost all of our Napa Valley estate wines in the 2020 Glass Fire, including our much beloved Coucher de Soleil Estate Rosé. In a true multi-AVA collaboration, our French trained winemaker got to work and sourced some beautiful high altitude Grenache from Paso Robles, CA and made the wine in Sonoma, CA. This Provence inspired rosé is crisp, bright with beautiful notes of strawberry, tropical fruits, citrus and a hint of hibiscus. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of this limited production wine will be donated to the Napa Valley Community Disaster Relief Fund to support those who have lost so much in the wake of the fires.

2018 Canard Estate Zinfandel Napa Valley

2018 Canard "Throwback" Napa Valley

Price: $78.75     Sale $69.30

This blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Franc is a “Throwback” to wines that were being produced in Napa in the 1970s when there was a bit more Old World influence from the Left Bank of Bordeaux. It’s the perfect harmony of French restraint and spectacular Napa Valley fruit. This massive wine has great body and structure, yet fine integrated tannins with notes of spice, red current, black cherry and cedar. 225 cases produced.

2019 Canard "Adam's Blend" Napa Valley

Price: $90.00     Sale $79.20

This Cabernet Franc dominant blend “bridges” the two styles from the Left and Right Bank of Bordeaux and expresses all the finesse and elegance indicative to this noble grape. Medium bodied with notes of violets, rose petals, red fruits and spice makes this  wine incredibly versatile and food friendly. A smooth delicate entry yields to great structure and a long finish of ground rose buds, cocoa, rhubarb, sweet cranberries and cherries.  223 cases - 95 pts Jeb Dunnuck

A blend of 92% Cabernet Franc, 5% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon.

2019 Canard "The Rescuer" Napa Valley

A bit about Canard Vineyard

Canard Vineyard has been creating hand-crafted wines in Napa Valley since 1984. Each year we produce nine single vineyard wines, each one expressing the remarkable complexities of our estate's unique terroir. Our wines are produced from sustainably grown, dry farmed grapes, which are skillfully transformed into the finest expression of each varietal. We are dedicated to creating wines of distinction with an emphasis on quality over quantity.

Situated on the Northwest corner of Dunaweal Lane and the Silverado Trail in Calistoga, the twenty-five acre property is considered a historic vineyard in Napa Valley. The estate was the original homestead of Reason P. Tucker, who gained notoriety for leading the efforts to rescue the survivors of the ill-fated Donnor Party.

The residence at Canard was built in 1859 and quickly became the center of social activity in the area during the late 1800’s. Zinfandel was planted over 135 years ago and remarkably those dry farmed vines still stand, yielding a small quantity of incredibly elegant fruit, which goes into our highly coveted Estate and Estate Reserve Zinfandel. Over the years, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and, of course Cabernet Sauvignon were planted and have been meticulously cared for using painstaking but extremely effective vineyard practices. Creating wine at this level demands a great deal of discernment and sacrifice and most of it takes place in the vineyard. The result is the culmination of what man and nature can do when they work together in harmony.

Rich and Carolyn Czapleski searched for what seemed like an eternity for the perfect vineyard with the climate and soil to grow the red varietals they needed for a world class wine. This quest finally came to an end in 1983 when they purchased what is now Canard Vineyard. Over the years, Carolyn, a master gardener and interior designer, transformed the historic home and surrounding grounds into something magical.

Rich immediately got his hands dirty and tended to the vines. As a true gentleman farmer his philosophy was simple; “If you take care of the vines, the vines will take care of you.” He has spent the last thirty-seven years doing exactly that, but also allowing the natural terroir to influence the distinctive characteristics of the wine. With the help of managing director Adam Fox, winemaker Brian Graham and their son Adam, Rich and Carolyn have assembled a small but talented team who share their desire to make the finest wines possible, while maintaining great integrity and respect for the land.
