"The First Duty of wine is to be Red...the second is to be a Burgundy"

 Harry Waugh

Every year we host an event featuring the newest releases from Bouchard Pere et Fils and we just had winemaker Frederick Weber here in 2019.  Over the years we have hosted Luc Bouchard several times and just before the world shut down in 2020 we had our first chance to break bread with President of the Henriot group Gilles De Larouzière, it was one of the last “in person” events that we hosted at the Wine Bar before the Pandemic started.

Gilles was so impressed with the Wine Watch and the dinner we put on that evening when the world shut down he picked up the phone and called me personally in March 2020 to see how the Wine Watch was doing at the start of the pandemic.  I watched as many of my peers were hosting virtual wine tastings to compensate for inability to host them in person.  At first, I was very reluctant to host a virtual tasting as we like to have our hosts here in person, but my good friend Kelly McFadden from the Henriot Group convinced me to host a virtual wine tasting with Gilles and on May 21st this was the first of many virtual wine tasting events that have become our normal thing here on in the Wine Bar on Wednesday afternoon.  It all started with Gilles just over a year ago.

Now, we have over 40 presentations up on our Instagram TV channel and you can still purchase all the wines from the original presentation and taste through them as you watch Gilles talk about the wines.

In addition to the Virtual presentation and the wines that we have in the store from the Henriot Group we have also just received some older vintage Bouchard Pere et Fils and William Fevre Burgundy direct from the cellars in Burgundy.  We are drinking the 2012 Clos Vougeot right now and at the same price or less than the current release it is drinking beautifully still a few years away from its peak but with an hour in the glass- this wine is magic!  Check out the wines from the 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014 vintages on this offering, not only do they have a few years in the cellar, but they are priced at or below the current 2018 vintage wines on this offering.

NV Henriot Souverain Brut Champagne

Toasty smokey notes to the bouquet very complex and rich with hazelnut and light ginger spice. Around 60% Chardonnay and 40% Pinot Noir usually 20% reserve wines going back as far as 4-5 years. Lovely richness on the tongue with a fresh dough and nutty quality coming through on the finish, with pear and apple fruit lemon citrus and a smoky character on the finish. Finish 40 Excellent

2018 Domaine William Fevre Saint Bris

The little known Saint-Bris is an AOC for white wine in the Burgundy wine region of France. This AOC is located around the village Saint-Bris-le-Vineux in the Yonne department, a few kilometers southwest of the Chablis AOC area, and southeast of the city of Auxerre, which places it roughly halfway between Paris and Burgundy's heartland in Côte d'Or. The approximately 100 hectares of vineyard in the appellation are situated in the communes Chitry, Irancy, Quenne, Saint-Bris-le-Vineux and Vincelottes.

Fresh, intense bouquet with asserted blackcurrant bud and boxwood notes. Fresh and round on the palate, with spontaneous expression. A wine with exquisite lightness.

2018 William Fevre Chablis Domaine William Fevre

Winery Notes:  Combining lovely fruitiness with an attractive freshness and characteristic minerality, Chablis is a wine region with global renown. Domaine William Fèvre’s vineyards sit on Kimmeridgian subsoil and enjoy ideal exposures for the production of a very fine wine.

Very elegant bouquet, developing citrus, white-fleshed fruit and floral notes. Fresh and supple, the wine is marked by mineral notes that are typical of the appellation.

2017 Bouchard Pere et Fils Beaune Du Chateau Rouge

Bouchard Père & Fils has been producing the Beaune du Château cuvée, an exclusivity of the House, since 1907. This wine, which is a blend of several Premier Cru vineyards vinified separately, demonstrates the different facets of the terroir of Beaune. Red Beaune du Château comes from 17 Beaune Premier Cru vineyards, chosen for their complementary qualities: Aigrots, Avaux, Bas des Teurons, Belissands, Boucherottes, Bressandes, Cent Vignes, Champs Pimonts, Clos du Roi, A l'Ecu, En Genêts, Grèves, Pertuisots, Reversées, Seurey, Sizies and Toussaints.

President, Maisons & Domaines Henriot

Following in the footsteps of seven generations before him, Gilles de Larouzière oversees one of the few remaining family-owned champagne houses, Champagne Henriot, as guardian of its independence and heritage. Named the president of Maisons & Domaines Henriot in 2015, Gilles sits on the board of directors for the company that began in the champagne business in 1808 and has grown into the Burgundy sector over recent decades.

Born in 1974, Gilles studied Public and European Law, graduating from l’Université de Paris-Sorbonne (Paris IV), followed by receiving his BA in Public Affairs at the Institut d’Etudes Politiques de Paris. After his studies, Gilles completed his military service as a member of the Alpine Troops assigned to Bosnia where he was part of the NATO (SFOR) Stabilization Force. At the end of his service, Gilles began a career in the strategy consulting industry at Capgemini Consulting, a French multinational information technology and management consulting corporation, where he was a key executive in the Financial Services sector.

In 2011, Gilles joined the board of directors of Maisons & Domaines Henriot, which was founded by his uncle, Group President Joseph Henriot, and his sisters. Through 2015 when his uncle passed away, Gilles worked closely with Joseph to develop the group’s strategy and governance with an eye to the future. Gilles was elected Group President by the family’s shareholders in 2015, making him the eighth generation of the Henriot family to oversee the company.

Gilles lives in Paris with his wife Cécile and their four children.

A Brief History of Bouchard Pere Et Fils

Founded in 1731, Bouchard Père & Fils now owns the most fabulous collection of famous vineyards, situated in the heart of the Côte d’Or, where the great wines of Burgundy are born.  Bouchard Pere et Fils owns 130 hectares in cotes d'or making them the largest landowner of classified vineyards with 12 different Grand Cru and 74 different Premier Cru vines with legendary names : Corton-Charlemagne, Clos Vougeot, Montrachet, Beaune Grèves Vigne de l’Enfant Jésus, Volnay Caillerets, Meursault Perrières, Nuits-Saint-Georges les Cailles, to name only a few.  The company trades from the old Château de Beaune, a fortress built in the 15th Century whose bastions with walls as thick as seven meters shield, in the best possible atmosphere, an unequalled collection of exceptional bottles.  Many of these are over a hundred years old and originated before phylloxera invaded the French vineyards.

The cellars here were built under the reign of Louis the 11th during the 14th and 15th century.  They were built by one of the dukes of burgundy to store arms so they are unique as this was not intended to house wine bottles.  Louis the 16th gave this fortress to the town of Beaune and they were bought by the Bouchard Pere et Fils firm in 1820.  After the French revolution all property of the church was confiscated and sold at auction and it was at this time that Bouchard bought up a lot of vineyards for a very reasonable price.  Today if you were to put a price tag on the vineyards owned here it would be in the hundreds of millions of dollars.  The have the largest cellar in burgundy with 50,000 bottles of old vintages going back to 1846 Meursault Charmes.  They recork the bottles every 20-40 year, they are sleeping under 10 meters of earth and some of the walls of the cellar are 5-7 meters thick so the conditions are completely perfect and natural.  They are consistently 13-15 degrees Celsius and the humidity is 80-90 percent.

You can see the old arms bins that now hold wine bottles here in the first picture.  The second picture shows where the three fake walls were placed during the German occupation of this region during WW2.  They have four fake walls constructed to conceal some of the oldest bottles from the Germans.  The third shot is a wall demonstrating just how thick the construction is.

In 1995, the Bouchard family passed the torch on to a very old Champagne family, the Henriots, who have carried on the strategy established by the Bouchards over nine generations. The Domaine expanded in the Côte de Nuits by acquiring parcels in two Grands Crus: "Bonnes Mares" and "Clos Vougeot". Then in 1996 they acquired further vineyards in Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru "Les Cazetiers".

Finally, in 2005, the Maison inaugurated its new "Saint-Vincent" winery and barrel cellar. The technical team took advantage of 275 years of savoir faire and several years of observation world-wide to carry out this work, so as to maximize the quality of its wines.  With this new winemaking facility, Bouchard Père & Fils is equipped to meet the challenge of the quest for excellence, without concession, in the production of the Grands Vins de Bourgogne.

Luc Bouchard hosted our group for the tasting at the winery and suggested a local restaurant, La Table de Guigone.  This place was very unassuming from the street but the food was divine like the combination of Foie Gras and Sweet breads in a salad format which was spectacular.  The leg of lamb was one of the best that I have ever had and the Beaune du Chateau wines that went with our meal were also incredible as this is one of the best value areas in Burgundy for both red and white.

If you want to go there while in Burgundy we recommend making reservations as many restaurants in Burgundy are only open 4-5 nights a week- Bouchard Pere et Fils however is one of the easiest wineries to visit as they are open to the public nearly every day of the week and have cellar tours everyday as well in addition to over a dozen wines available for tasting at no charge!! I may have let the cat out of the bag, if you are in Beaune there is no excuse for not stopping by this famous producer and taste through their wines, they are one of the easiest places to tour and see in Burgundy and the wines are excellent.

Domaine William Fevre

Coming from a family that has been in the Chablis region for more than 250 years, William Fèvre’s father was already a great wine-maker after World War II. His son William founded the Domaine de la Maladière and announced his first harvest in 1959.

For many years, William Fèvre (who to this day enjoys a very good reputation as a defender of historically renowned terroirs), has worked each plot keenly and skillfully so as to make wine whose personality reflects the authenticity of the soils from which they spring.

In 1998, the venerable Henriot family from Champagne succeeded him. To continue these focused efforts, the Domaine was taken up with the constant desire to make indisputably genuine and fine wines, and above all with bringing along a very personal expertise in Chardonnay. All the efforts have but one goal – to finely express the most subtle variations in the greatest Chablis crus.

This attachment to the value of the terroir has also allowed the William Fèvre Domaine to establish an exceptional estate by acquiring some of the best Chablis vineyards.

With its 47 hectares Domaine, of which more than half are in Chablis Premier Cru (12 hectares) and Grand Cru (15.2 hectares), William Fèvre owns the widest array of Grands Crus and benefits from ideal conditions to produce excellent Chablis.

Located on “historical” terroirs, dating from before the extension of the vineyard areas that occurred in the 1970’s, the William Fèvre Domaine is at the very heart of the vineyards, on soil that mixes marl and clay-rich lime, as well as a Kimmeridgian subsoil rich in minerals and oyster fossils that give Chablis its unique mineral character.

The Chablis terroirs constitute an ideal environment for the cultivation of Chardonnay but this special soil is not enough to elaborate exceptional wines. One needs all the know-how and experience that comes from men to help a terroir live up to its full potential, and to produce grapes and wines worthy of their appellations and faithful to their origins.

At William Fèvre, everything is done, to reach this goal. Grapes are hand-picked and put in small crates, the bunches are rigorously sorted out, pressings are short, the must carefully settled, and a fine balance is established, according to the vintage, for the vinification between vat and cask. Since the 1998 vintage, the proportion of new casks was reduced so as to not dampen the subtle variations of Chablis terroir. These methods and precautions allow us to obtain rich wines of a very high aromatic purity that hold on their typicity, whose principle characteristics are minerality and freshness.

Beaux Freres Winery from Oregon

While on vacation in 1986, Michael Etzel came upon an 88-acre pig farm for sale located on Ribbon Ridge in the Northern Willamette Valley, Yamhill County, Oregon. After some deliberation, Michael purchased the farm with his brother-in-law (the French idiom is "beaux frères"), Robert Parker, Jr.

Michael uprooted his young family from Colorado and moved to the farm the following summer. He began his focused pursuit as a vineyard manager by planting only Pinot Noir and slowly transforming the old pig and dairy farm into his jewel. While planting his own vineyard, Michael worked four harvests at Ponzi Winery. In 1990, Michael harvested his first crop and sold the grapes, except enough to make one barrel, to winemakers Ken Wright and Dick Ponzi.

In 1991, a renovation of one of the barns led to the creation of Beaux Frères Winery. With each new vintage, Michael's efforts further unveil his pursuit of Pinot Noir that is the purest expression of the vineyard.

In the spring of 2017, our second-generation winery began a new partnership with eighth-generation French family-owned Maisons & Domaines Henriot.

Our new partners' have been inspired by the authenticity, integrity, and character of our vineyard and winery. In addition to his partial-ownership, Michael's role in guiding vineyard, winery, and administrative operations continues, as does the role of his son, Mike D. Etzel, as Winemaker. We believe we are in a better position than ever to create world-class wines of truly unique character and complexity

Henriot Champagne

See the source image

he Champagne house of Henriot can trace its history back 370+ years to when their direct descendants migrated to the region.  Native to Lorraine, the family relocated to Champagne around 1640.  In Reims, the Henriots engaged in textile and wine brokerage.  Little by little, the family acquired vineyards and by 1791 they had acquired the Hôtel des Douanes and the Fermes Royales (built in 1760 by the architect Legendre in honour of King Louis XV).

In 1794 Nicolas Henriot married Apolline Godinot.  Together, they developed a fascination for the culture of the vine and production of wines of quality.

It was in 1808, under Apolline Henriot, that Champagne Henriot was officially founded. She was the niece of the very famous Abbé Godinot, an erudite man who contributed to improvements in viticulture and the making of the Champagne wine.  Apolline, an enterprising woman of great character, sold her wines both in France and abroad.

The champagne wines became a huge success with royalty and it was only natural that Champagne Henriot became the favorite firstly at the Dutch court, then in Austria and Hungary with the Hapsburgs.

Since 1808, Champagne Henriot, one of the last independent and family-owned houses in Champagne, has pursued a tradition of excellence – a fragile balance between delicacy, intensity, and purity. For seven generations, the family has selected only the very best vineyards, concentrated on the purity of chardonnay and has upheld the utmost respect for time in order to ensure the cuvee has an opportunity to reach its full expression.

The Champagne business is very incestuous and in 1851 Ernest Henriot, grandson of Apolline Henriot, persuaded by his sister, Amélie Henriot, became associated with his brother in law, Charles Camille Heidsieck and created the brand Charles Heidsieck.  Ernest continued to manage his own business in his own name.

The Henriot family has retained direct cultivation of roughly 35 hectares (87 acres). Their parcels are scattered among the Vallée de la Marne (Mareuil and Ay, a Grand Cru); la Montagne de Reims (Avenay, a Premier Cru); and the Côte des Blancs (Epernay, notably le Clos l’Abbé, and Chouilly, a Premier Cru). These vineyards supply fifteen to twenty percent of its needs. To supply the rest, the house depends primarily on growers who share its standards of quality. This approach provides a very large palette of crus for its blends, one of the keys to its expertise.

The vineyards it uses are situated throughout the appellation. The house is fortunate to have access to Grands and Premiers Crus, particularly in the Côte des Blancs, stronghold of the chardonnay variety which dominates in its blends: Avize, Oger, Cramant, Vertus and others. Pinot noir is selected principally from crus on the northern slope of the Montagne de Reims, such as Verzy, Verzenay and Val d’Or.

The Brut Souverain is the house’s signature wine, as with most Champagne firms they also produce a Rose, which has become very fashionable over the last few years.  The Blanc Souverain is the firm’s 100% Chardonnay based cuvee and is better after being decanted for an hour.  Yes- that is correct! I did say decanter the Champagne and I usually prefer great champagnes even more on the second day after the bottle is open.  Champagne just like a great red or white wine also benefits from breathing.

The "Tenuta di Ghizzano" (Ghizzano Estate) is one of the oldest farms in the area and also one of the most innovative.

Completely ORGANIC and BIODYNAMIC, today it is composed of about 280 hectares, 18 of which dedicated to vines, 15 to olives, 100 to cereals and the remaining 150 to woods and poplar groves. (View full map - PDF)

Ghizzano is a small hilltop village, situated at about 200m above sea level in an area referred to as “TERRE DI PISA” (PISA LANDS) not far from the Tuscan coast, 40 km from Livorno and 40 km to south of Pisa.

The landscape is gentle and the climate is mild, thanks to the sea breeze, and without extreme temperatures or great risk of springtime frosts.

This soil is one of the most representative of the varied and complex pedological landscape of the Terre of Pisa: it is formed by marine sediments of the geological age called "Astiana" represented by more or less calcareous clay sands, where it is easy find shells fossils.
