"Red wine with fish. Well, that should have told me something."

Bond in From Russia with Love (1963)

The Cabernet Sauvignon grape is a relatively new invention in the world of grape varietals, it is the result of the combination of a white varietal Sauvignon Blanc and a red grape Cabernet Franc crossed by some mad grape scientist in southwest France in the 17th century.  Because of its thick skin and relative ease of cultivation this varietal has spread around the world and makes high quality full bodied red wines in many parts of the wine world.

Napa Valley has experienced several outstanding vintages in a row with 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016 and I am on my way to Napa Valley for Premier week right now to taste the 2017 vintage which appears to be another excellent year for Napa.  Napa Valley makes some of the most expensive wine on earth and whenever we get a change to offer one of its top wines at the best price in the country we say – How much do you have??? And I usually take everything that is available to me like the deal we just got on the 2015 Robert Mondai To Kalon Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve.  And since I’m in Napa right now and we still have a little of this KILLER wine left I thought we should offer it again along with all the 2015 vintage Napa Cabernet Sauvignon in the store!

I always say you can't drink points, but you are going to pay for them and with top vineyards like To Kalon in Napa you are going to pay regardless of points as the dirt is that valuable today.  There are no wines made from the 450 acres of the To Kalon Vineyard that you can buy today for under $100 per bottle retail, most of them are $200+ per bottle and many are over $500!

Those of you that have been following the Wine Watch e-mail know how I feel about Robert Mondavi Winery and if anyone deserves $100 for a bottle of wine in Napa it is the late great Robert Mondavi.  We are always concerned when a big company takes over a little winery, but Robert Mondavi winery was a big winery when Constellation Brands took over in 2004 and if anything, the wines have improved since.

This 2016 vintage is an outstanding one for Napa and with most of the top wines that scored (95 Points) or higher are over $200 per bottle- that makes this wine looks like an incredible value!!

Robert Mondavi Reserve To Kalon Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve Napa 2016

Suggested Retail Price: $175.00                  Sale $129.00       6 pack $739

(96 Points) A blend of 91% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, the deep garnet-purple colored 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon To Kalon Reserve opens with beautifully fragrant kirsch, wilted roses, candied violets and dried Provence herbs notes over a core of wild blueberries, red and black currants and mulberries plus wafts of tobacco leaf and cardamom. Medium to full-bodied, it fills the palate with perfumed, crunchy black fruits framed by firm, ripe, grainy tannins and finishes long and earthy.  Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

A bit about the 2016 Vintage in Napa from the Wine Spectator:

For many Napa Valley vintners, 2016 extends a run of exceptional years for Cabernet Sauvignon to five in a row. Their only regret is that there wasn't more fruit.

"Most of the vineyards I work with saw slightly below–normal crops both in terms of the number of clusters per vine and cluster size," said Celia Welch of Corra, who is also an advisor to a handful of Napa wineries. Almost every year from 2013 on has seen lower yields for Cabernet, and many believe drought is a factor, impacting the overall health of the vines.

"With better conditions in May than we saw in 2015, the amount of berry shatter was much reduced this year," said Welch. "But the reduced cluster count and the slight reduction in cluster weights meant that, overall, we saw about a 20 percent reduction in expected yields."

The year swung from hot to cold and hot again. September was good, but as harvest wound down, Napa had one of the wettest Octobers in decades. Those abrupt rainstorms put a quick end to the harvest. Most winemakers say they harvested their crops by then and were pleased by the quality and volume, but everyone would have liked a little more juice.

"Some lots taste so good they could be enjoyed without barrel aging," said Caymus Vineyards owner Chuck Wagner, who's been making Cabernet in Napa since the 1970s. The even temperatures throughout the growing season pleased him. "For the entire 2016 season Napa had none of the terrific heat spikes our valley is known for—this held back vine stress."

For Welch and others, harvest was more of a roller-coaster ride. While there weren't severe heat spikes, the periods of hot days followed by runs of cooler days meant that the fruit ripened in waves. Vineyards on rocky sites, with dry soils, or on west-facing slopes ripened first.

"We worked carefully to get the fruit completely ripe as the sugar levels rose faster than the overall maturity of the fruit," said Welch. "Several of my clients employed shade cloth for the first time this year, in order to protect the skins from desiccating or getting sunburned during the late season heat spells."

Fermentations are the first time winemakers can accurately assess quality, and she and others reported the results at this early point were very encouraging. "I think this will be a vintage where we dearly wish we had more fruit," she said. "But will be very happy with the overall quality of the wines."  By James Laube, Nov 11, 2016

A Brief History of Robert Mondavi Winery:

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/78/Robert_Mondavi_entrance_closeup.jpg

In 1965, Robert Mondavi, the winemaker and a partner at the venerable Charles Krug Winery, left Krug in a bitter feud with his brother and his mother Rosa over the future direction of the Charles Krug Winery.  Determined to make wines that reflected his vision and ambition, Robert started his own winery in 1966 with $200,000 borrowed from friends and financial backing from the Rainier Brewing Co.  Mondavi eventually bought out his investors so that his immediate family could wholly control the winery.  Although the dream of creating a large, first-class winery may seem quite common-place today, it was a bold new venture forty years ago.  A few small wineries sprung up in the fifties and the early sixties, but the Robert Mondavi Winery was the first major operation to open its doors since Prohibition.  Production the first year was only 23,000 cases; today the winery has maxed out at about 500,000 cases.  In April of 1993 Robert Mondavi - then 80 years old - decided that he needed to make a public stock offering to finance further expansion and to replant many of his vineyards devastated by the phylloxera root louse.  It was the first public stock offering for a winery since the Chalone Group made the move a decade earlier in 1984.

Today, Constellation Brands, the parent company that owns the Robert Mondavi winery and the brand name produces over twenty million cases of wine annually.  Production began to climb for the Robert Mondavi brand when they purchased the adjunct facility Woodbridge in 1979 in California's San Joaquin Valley.  Production climbed in a few short years to over two and a half million cases annually.  It is there that Mondavi introduced his line of everyday red and white wines, once affectionately known as "Bob Red" and Bob White".  The Woodbridge brand has become one of the most successful labels in the low-priced varietal category of generic California wines. Because Mondavi felt that his home winery in Oakville had reached its limits, he purchased the ailing Vichon winery in 1985 in order to give his family an opportunity to continue their growth in the quality end of the spectrum.  Vichon's production climbed well over the 100,000 case mark, and the brand name was then changed to Vichon Mediterranean, the juice started to flow from the South of France.  The Vichon winery in Napa then became home to the La Famillia line of Italian varietal wines.  In 1991 Robert Mondavi then purchased Byron Vineyards, one of the top wineries in Santa Barbara and one of the best producers of Chardonnay in California.  In 2000 Mondavi purchased Arrowood winery in Sonoma, adding yet another outstanding quality winery to its family of fine wines.  In the early nineties Mondavi launched two new lines of wines.  The first was a line of premium wines known as appellation wines. The three appellation wines included; an Oakville District Cabernet Sauvignon, a Stags Leap District Sauvignon Blanc, and a Carneros Pinot Noir, these appellation wines were positioned between the regular Mondavi bottlings and the reserve wines.  The second line of wines (introduced in 1995) was the Robert Mondavi Coastal brand.  This debuted with a moderately-priced 1993 Chardonnay made with grapes sourced primarily from California's South Coast districts of Monterey, Santa Barbara, and San Luis Obispo.

Across the highway from the winery in Oakville sits the impressive OPUS ONE facility completed in 1993.  The idea of the joint venture may be Robert Mondavi's single greatest achievement.  Mondavi and the late Baron Rothschild shocked the wine world some thirty years ago when they announced a joint Franco-American venture.  Mondavi had always been known as the consummate marketer; and OPUS ONE - a Napa Valley wine that joined the most renowned vintner of France with the most famous wine producer of America - was his crowning achievement.  In addition to his market smarts, Mondavi is also known for his championing of technology over art in the making of wine.  He was the first to espouse the theory that American know-how in technology could and would result in American superiority in wines.  However, as this elder statesman has mellowed and grown wiser in later life, he no longer clings so fiercely to this belief.  He laments the fact that his winery does not have the image of the boutiques; and he admits - without completely eschewing the necessity of technology - that the small, hand-made wines may be the best.  For that reason, in the middle 1980's the Mondavi Winery gradually began a shift back to the traditional, natural way of producing wines that were completely unfined and unfiltered.  In February of 1991 Robert Mondavi passed the baton and gave full control to his two sons, who at that time were both jointly accountable for the future of the Robert Mondavi Winery.  The older son Michael was responsible for the operational side of the winery and his brother Tim handled the winemaking.

Possibly no vintner in California did it better on a grand scale than Robert Mondavi.  It is true that his regular bottlings - always good and consistently reliable - have usually not risen above the pack in their price class since the late 1970's, but Robert Mondavi Winery really "struts his stuff" with his Reserve wines. The Chardonnays and Cabernets have been consistent standouts for years, and lately we have been very impressed with the Reserve Fumé Blancs from the To-Kalon Vineyard.

The biggest news in California wine history took place in 2004 during the final year of the Robert Mondavi Winery’s reign as the U.S.’s most iconic wine family.  It was that year that Constellation brands bought a majority share in the company’s stock kicking the Mondavis out of the winery with their namesake putting Genevieve Janssens in charge of the winemaking at the winery that started making Bordeaux-like classic American wine.  In the aftermath of the four years since the Mondavis lost their Napa Valley property, the humble and talented Genevieve Janssens remains in charge maintaining the consistency of the quality classic red wines produced for the world’s largest and most respected wine corporations.

Always eclipsed by the large visages of Robert Mondavi himself, and his sons Michael and Tim, the Moroccan-born, French-raised Janssens has been nearly unheralded in her endeavors.  The scintillating missteps that the Mondavi family may or may not have taken as they attempted to play with the big money boys on Wall Street served to spin the perception in the marketplace as to the quality of their wines. Five years out, the winery continues apace. Now, under the aegis of the enormous maw that is Constellation Brands, Robert Mondavi Winery is trying to stay ahead of the peloton as it attempts to reconstitute the ashes and salve the bruises that the former company sustained in the scrum that led to the takeover.
