Next week we have only two events on the Calendar as things are just starting to heat up here for the summer schedule of wine tasting events.  We can call next week Spanish Wine appreciation week as both events are featuring wines from Spain our first event on Tuesday night here at the store we will have two winemakers from Spain that will be here at the store to show some of Spain’s most important brands.  I know that these are not usually wines that we feature in terms of their price range here at Wine Watch but these are excellent values and we also have some of the wineries Gran Reserva Cuvees here to showcase the quality level that even the big boys can achieve in the Cava world.

The Scala Dei wines of the Priorat will also be on the table this evening and this is one of the most important wineries of this region dating back to the 12th Century.

Our Vintage Spanish tasting is next Thursday night and here we will feature some of the most age worthy in all of Spain so we start with the entry level wines of one of the biggest producers in Spain and we finish our Spanish wine tour with some of the best.  Both of these events will open your eyes to the world of Spanish wines at opposing sides of the quality and price spectrum.

Wine Watch Catering’s Toni Lampasone will be making some traditional Spanish style tapas to compliment the tasting wines.  This is a walk around tasting and is limited to 25 tasters, the fee for this tasting is $35 per person + tax, for reservations call 954-523-9463.

Elisabeth Figueras is a fourth generation winemaker who grew up surrounded by vineyards. Her first memories are of walking among the grapes as a toddler, and she has always been profoundly tied to the land.

Figueras has a degree in chemical engineering, and studied enology at the University of Tarragona. Her passion for winemaking brought her to California where she worked for Codorníu Raventós at Artesa Winery and then to Church Road Vineyards in New Zealand. She gained additional years of experience at several wineries in the Penedès before reuniting with the Codorníu Raventós winemaking team at Raimat in Costers del Segre.

Winemaking and viticulture have always been a vocation for Figueras, who prides herself on contributing to the pure pleasure Raimat consumers enjoy in the winery’s sustainably-farmed wines.

Leading the way for prestige Cava Bruno Colomer Martí has been Head Winemaker at the Codorníu cellars since 2008. During this time, he has elaborated his expertise of vineyard selection, vineyard diversity and. . . teamwork.

Bruno is especially proud of his team’s many achievements in these last three years: their capacity for separatelyvinifying grapes from many different origins; working with large volumes of fruit; studying the use (and prevention) of
malolactic fermentation according to wine styles; refining the definition of wine styles for different labels; and finally, being able to make  Cavas whose youth can be retained over time. Bruno was born in Sant Cugat, Barcelona and graduated in 1988 as a Technical Agricultural Engineer at the Escuela Politécnica de Barcelona. He then completed his training with the Diplôme National d’Oenologie at the Université de Bourgogne in France.

Bruno started his career in the production area in 1990 and in 1996 started working at Mont Ferrant, S.A., where he was Head Winemaker for Cavas. From 2006 until 2008, he was Technical Director at Heretat Mas Tinell, managing all still and sparkling winemaking processes of the winery in the Penedès.

Bruno finds inspiration in ultra-premium, sweet wines (Sauternes, Tokaj, Alsace, Germany, Pedro Ximenez, red Grenache); red wines from Toro, Priorat, Bierzo, Chateauneuf-du-Pape; Burgundy whites; and. . . aged Champagne.
