We are hosting virtual tastings every Wednesday on Zoom and Instagram live which will be posted to Instagram TV.  So, if you can’t make it at 2pm to chat with Allessio Planeta, the owner of Planeta Winery in Sicily on Wednesday, September 2nd you can tune in any time after that by checking out the video posted to Wine Watch’s Instagram page.  The virtual tasting packs are up on our web page under the gift box selections and you can purchase them before the event and taste along with us or purchase them any time after the event until the wines are no longer available and taste the wines and watch the producer interview at your leisure.

The following week, we have our good friend Kirk Venge here from Venge Vineyards.  Join us as we welcome one of the top producers from Napa Valley on Wednesday, September 9nd at 6pm EST.  We will be showing four wines from Venge Vineyards and we have a four pack listed on this e-mail and in the Wine Watch gift Box section of the Web page if you want to follow along you can purchase all four wines in one pack or any of the wines individually on our web page just type in Venge and you will find the selections we are showcasing for the event.

Kirk is the son of Nils Venge and although it makes things a bit easier when you grow up in a winemaking family Kirk had big shoes to following is father.  Nils made the first 100 point wine from Napa Valley according to the world’s leading wine critic Robert Parker Jr.  That wine was the 1985 Groth Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest is history.  Nils became one of the most sought after winemakers in the Valley and when Kirk decided to follow his father’s footsteps as a winemaker people expected big things from him and he delivered.

We are glad to have Kirk as our special guest on September 9th and you can join us live and ask questions or watch the presentation on Instagram TV anytime after the event and order any of the wines we are presenting or all of them through the link below.  Please dress appropriately if you are on our zoom call.

A bit about Venge Vineyards:

See the source image

The Venge (ven-ghee) family has farmed vitis vinifera varieties in Napa Valley for nearly half a century. It is a journey that began when Knud Venge emigrated from Denmark to the United States in the early 1900’s. Knud’s son, Per Venge, found his passion in the wine and spirits industry and started Vencom Imports, focusing on the importation of Western European fine wines and spirits. It was Per’s son, Nils Venge, who left the family business in the 1960’s with a vision to study viticulture at UC Davis and establish the family name as an icon in the winegrowing community.
The family’s viticultural roots flourished in 1976 with the purchase of a 17-acre vineyard in the Oakville District that was planted to Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. This fortunate development cast the family among the winemaking pioneers of Napa Valley.
Nils’ and Dianna Venge’s son, Kirk Venge, gravitated to winemaking at an early age. He proved to be as talented a winemaker as his father, making wines in his own style, with a vision to build on the family legacy. In 2008, Kirk achieved his lifelong dream and acquired full ownership of Venge Vineyards. Today, Kirk continues the Napa Valley heritage, focusing on select vineyard sites that produce fruit worthy of bearing the Venge family name.
Farming and winemaking is in the blood of Owner and Winemaker, Kirk Venge, “When I was growing up, working in the vineyard and winery gave me a wonderful sense of partnership in my family’s way of life; it was hard work, but I loved it.”
Born and raised in Rutherford, Napa Valley, surrounded by fabled vineyards and wineries, Kirk Venge was instilled with his father’s vision of excellence. He learned the rhythm of winemaking as a young man, helping in the family vineyard throughout the growing season, experiencing the labor of harvest and the love of crush, and working alongside his father, Nils Venge, in the winery. Some of his earliest memories are of riding on the tractor with his father cultivating the Oakville Estate vineyard and dragging hoses across the cellar floor.
Kirk earned his degree in Viticulture and Enology at the prestigious University of California, Davis, graduating in 1998. He worked diligently during summer internships as the experimental winemaker for Mumm, Napa Valley, where he focused on producing still Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. A post-graduation harvest in New Zealand and travels in the great wine regions of Europe would provide him with the skills to lead production on the Venge Family Reserve wines in 2003.
When Kirk acquired ownership and the title of Winemaker from his father in 2008, he immediately purchased a 12.5 acre vineyard in the foothills of the Palisades Mountains in Calistoga, determined to found a new estate winery from which to further his own Napa Valley legacy.
“My focus has always been the vineyard first. So when the Bone Ash Vineyard site became available in Calistoga, I knew the potential for growing and producing reputable Cabernet Sauvignon was already established in the neighborhood by Bart Araujo, Dr. Kenefick, and Fred Fisher. I believe this site will produce wines that are every bit as compelling as our Oakville Estate designations.”
It is his experience that is the driving force behind the quality of Venge’s wines.

Our experience spans four decades in winemaking. Both traditional and progressive wine production techniques are embraced, although we remain focused on our core belief: only fruit grown from select vineyards that has been handled gently and naturally produces wine worthy of bottling under the Venge family name.
Our Core Practices
Red Wine Production
All Hands On Deck: Hand sorting is a family tradition and a required harvest activity for everyone at Venge Vineyards.
Go With Gravity: Using a gentle, state of the art Mistral berry sorting system allows the removal of any additional, unwanted raisins, shot berries, pips, and leftover foliage from the hand-sorted fruit. This secondary sorting system assures only ripened, healthy fruit makes it into the tanks. A conveyor belt gently transfers the fruit directly into each tank via gravity in preparation for pre-fermentation cold soaking. This eliminates the use of pumps that may serrate the skins and break the seeds. This prevents imbalances in phenolic extractions and leaching of seed tannins into the free-run juice.
Chill: In the tank, we cold soak the must and free-run juice to gently extract additional flavor and color pigments from the skins.
Go Native: Utilizing a combination of cultured and wild yeasts for primary and secondary fermentation is standard doctrine. Fermentation is conducted in a combination of hand-crafted, Italian stainless steel tanks, concrete vats, and open top oak barriques. Once fermentation begins, gentle diaphragm pumps are used to move the free-run juice over the must cap to assure a thorough soaking for extraction of vital phenolics. Extended macerations are common, generally lasting 18 to 27 days.
Barrel Down: A combination of new and once-used French oak barrels are used for red wine aging. The exception is our Scout’s Honor, which is aged in a combination of new American oak and used French oak barrels. Our red wines typically age 16 to 27 months in oak, depending on the varietal and the vintage.
Bottle As Is: Natural is better. Therefore, our red wines are bottled unfiltered and unfined.

White Wine Production
Press The Flesh: We whole-cluster press our whites and transport the juice via diaphragm pumps to hand-crafted, Italian stainless steel tanks. We implement a 48-hour oxidative settling to allow heavy phenolics to fall out and rack the wine to prevent browning of the whites. A combination of cultured and native yeasts are allowed to inoculate fermentation.
Stir It Up: The fermented wine is moved to neutral French oak barrels and allowed to undergo partial malolactic fermentation. Allowing only partial secondary fermentation preserves the wines natural acids, adding necessary verve and backbone to our white wines. We sur lie age our whites for 6 to 9 months, stirring the barrels weekly for three months to fill out the mid-palate of the wine.

95% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Cabernet Franc, 2% Petit Verdot and 1% Merlot.

100% gravity flow was deployed in the production of this wine. The fruit was hand picked and gently processed using our state-of-the-art Pellenc sorting and destemming system, producing what we describe as “fruit caviar.” The pristine, whole berries were moved via elevator belt into a combination of small stainless steel, concrete tank fermenters, and open-top barriques. Time on skins lasted 20 to 35 days. The fruit was then separated to “free run” and “light press” fractions. The finished wine was aged in 65% new, tight grained, French Oak barrels for 18 months. We employ a variety of cooperages for Bordeaux varieties including Boutes, Sylvain, Taransaud, Gamba and Alain Foquet. 100% native, spontaneous yeast and malolactic fermentations were also key ingredients in the making of this wine. The gentle use of gravity flow winemaking, whenever possible, is carefully exercised throughout the making of this and every Venge wine. Bottled unfiltered.  vengevineyards.com

63% Zinfandel, 16% Charbono, 12% Petite Sirah, 9%Syrah

This delicious red blend honors our late and beloved Labrador Retriever, Scout. This wine is based on a tradition of producing a full bodied and delicious red wine. We start with a base of old-vine Zinfandel and build upon that with dry-farmed Petite Sirah, old-vine Charbono, and finish with mountain vineyard Syrah. The result is an unpretentious, generous mouthful of red wine that we recommend be opened and enjoyed immediately upon release. This vintage has a gorgeous, concentrated assemblage of violets, anise, honeysuckle, blue herbs, and a touch of vanillin. The palate is pure richness with loads black fruits and currants, pepper spice, and an enveloping masculinity of char and tannins from the Syrah, Charbono and Petite Sirah. A seamless balance and mouth coating deliciousness lead to a wine that is quite pleasing to the senses. Cellared correctly it will age for 5 to 8 years -vengevineyards.com

(90 Points) Deeply colored, the 2017 Zinfandel 1904 Heritage Vines is a sexy, sweetly fruited Zinfandel that's loaded with notions of black and blue fruits, crushed citrus, and exotic flowers. Ripe, sweetly fruited and textured on the palate, it has no shortage of fruit and will be a perfect Steak House wine. Jeb Dunnuck
