Vintage White Burgundy Tasting at Wine Watch

Etienne Sauzet Montrachet 1994

(90 Points) This 20-acre estate, run with considerable precision by Gerard Boudot, is among the top dozen or so producers of white Burgundy. 1994 is a very good vintage for white Burgundy, as evidenced by the following wines. The 1994 Batard-Montrachet offers formidable concentration, as well as a closed personality. With dense cherry and honeysuckle-like fruit, a nice touch of toasty oak, full body, and fine length, this wine will benefit from 1-3 years of cellaring; it should keep for a decade. Wine Advocate #107, Oct 1996

Louis Latour Montrachet 1996

Jacques Prieur Montrachet 1996

(93-96 Points) The 1996 Montrachet, while not quite at the level of this estate's 1995, is a spectacular wine. Its refined, ripe, and beguiling nose of flowers and minerals is followed by an intricate, highly-delineated, silky-textured, and full-bodied personality. Complex and concentrated flavors of gravel, minerals, red currants, earth, chalk, and honeysuckle are found in this defined yet broadly structured offering. Its admirably long and focused finish revealed traces of sweet oak spice. It should be at its plateau of maturity between 2003 and 2012. Bravo!  Wine Advocate #116, Apr 1998

Marc Colin Montrachet 2000

(92 Points) Colin's 2000 Montrachet has an immensely appealing nose with buttery minerals, spices, and anise. Rich, generous, and medium-bodied, it coats the palate with concentrated waves of honeyed minerals. This lush, deep offering will be at its best if consumed between 2005 and 2012.  Wine Advocate #138, Dec 2001

Bouchard Pere et Fils Chevalier Montrachet La Cabotte 1998

(91-93 Points) The highly impressive 1998 Chevalier-Montrachet La Cabotte exhibits dense, ripe fruits in its expressive aromatics. This medium to full-bodied, plump, and compelling wine is layered with pears, apples, hazelnuts, and minerals. Highly focused, yet thick and rich, it is a profound 1998. Projected maturity: 2002-2010.  Wine Advocate #128, Apr 2000

Bouchard Pere et Fils Chevalier Montrachet La Cabotte 1999

(91-94 Points)  The 1999 Chevalier-Montrachet La Cabotte (Domaine bottling) has extraordinary aromatic depth to its nut cake, floral, and super-ripe pear-laden nose. Medium-bodied, powerful, and intense, this is a concentrated, refined, and focused wine, with outstanding depth, precision, and muscle. Its mineral, spice, and candied apple flavors last throughout its extraordinarily long, crystalline finish. Anticipated maturity: now-2012. Wine Advocate #133, Feb 2001

Bouchard Pere et Fils Chevalier Montrachet La Cabotte 2000

(91-93 Points)  The medium-bodied 2000 Chevalier-Montrachet La Cabotte boasts minerals, spices, and creamed nuts in its aromatics as well as its flavor profile. It is fresh, broad, layered, and concentrated. This densely packed wine is ample, harmonious, and displays an admirably long, delineated finish. Projected maturity: 2004-2012. Wine Advocate #138, Dec 2001

Colin Deleger Chevalier Montrachet 2002

(92 Points)  Light golden color. Rich, complex, clean (thankfully!), rather exotic nose suggests citrus fruits, mint, minerals, and lightly toasted oak. Full-bodied, thick, and complex on the palate, balanced with terrific acidity. This is an attractive, more classic Chevalier that displays admirable power, citrus fruit, lushness, and purity. A few people think it’s “heavy-handed with no grace,” and the alcohol is a bit too much, but overall, this is a delicious wine. Three people voted for it as best in flight.  Executive Wine Seminar, Jul 2012
