Tuscany is one of Italy’s leading wine producing regions and is home to some Italy’s most popular wines like Brunello di Montalcino and Chianti Classico as well as "Supertuscan" wines like Tignanello, Sassicaia and Ornellaia.

There are four DOCG's for red wine today in Tuscany with Morellino Di Scanscano being added as of the 2006 vintage.  The most famous is Chianti Classico and the best in my opinion in terms of overall quality is Brunello di Montalicino.  Then there is the best value of all the little known Vino Nobile di Montepulcino, these wines offer similar quality to the wines of Montalcino but at a much more reasonable price.

These tastings at the Cafe Maxx for $35 are the best value of any event that we do. You get to try 6 different wines at the same time, pre-poured so they have a chance to open up and so you can go back through the line-up to get a second and third look at everything. This is how you learn about wine and with master chef Oliver Saucy sending out a few small courses to accompany the wines, you get a taste of Cafe Maxx and an education in wine all at the same time- a great way to spend happy hour.

Tonight we will feature the wines of Italy's most famous wine region where the Sangiovese is the star.  Join us as we experience some of the best wines made from this varietal including: Chianti Classico, Brunello di Montalcino, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and the newest DOCG in Tuscany Morellino di Scansano.  This is a pre-poured sit down tasting and is limited to 25 tasters, the fee for this tasting is $35 + Gratuity + tax for reservations call 954-523-9463.

2012 Poggio Trevvalle Morellino di Scansano
Price: $27.00       Sale $23.76          Case $276

Morellino di Scansano DOCG is an Italian red wine made in the hilly environs of the village of Scansano in the Maremma region of coastal Tuscany, which has an ancient but obscure tradition of winemaking. Morellino is the local name for the Sangiovese grape variety. Many people think that the name Morellino comes from morello (brown), the colour of the region's horses. The name may also come from the morello cherry, a dark red cherry with great tartness and acidity. The wine, which was granted DOC status in 1978, then upgraded to DOCG status beginning with the 2007 vintage, is made from at least 85% Sangiovese, which is also the basis of the Tuscan wines Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino, and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. The remaining 15% can comprise any non-aromatic black grape varieties included in a list made and periodically updated by Tuscan wine authorities.

2008 Villa Le Prata Brunello di Montalcino
Price: $58.00       Sale $51.04          Case $592

(88 Points) The 2008 Brunello di Montalcino has a good sense of immediacy and energy. Dark red cherries, raspberries, spices and mint are some of the notes that flow through to the finish. Firm tannins become more apparent on the mid-palate and finish. The 2008 could use another year to soften. Today it comes across as a bit rustic, but with potential. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2018. eRobertParker.com #207, Jun 2013

2012 Podere Sapaio Volpolo Bolgheri
Price: $36.50       Sale $32.12          Case $373

A blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot and 15% Petite Verdot aged for 14 months in barrique, they make 80,000 bottles on average. Started the winery in 1999 from Venice and thus Massimo had to start his own legacy as the family was not in the wine business. This area is the Bordeaux of Italy and this wine is reminiscent of Bordeaux with lots of dark currant and cassis berry fruit, notes of cigar box spice and fresh dark earth, nice complexity on the nose some black peppery spice coming out on the second day. A big and chewy wine on the tongue with layers of dark earth, tobacco spice and a good amount of dark berry fruit, a bit tannic right now but has great balance and depth of fruit. Finish 45+ Excellent +
