Shadow Box Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Napa 2009

Price: $78.75   Sale $69.30     Case $804

Blending a Napa Cabernet Sauvignon is both an art and a science. With the guidance and superb fruit of winemaker Steve Reynolds we went through blending trials to create this wine. The 68 cases are a blend of 85% Cabernet, 10% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Merlot - all from Napa Valley. The rich, alluring and inviting intense color of this full-bodied Cab only hints at the beauty of the wine in the glass. Supple aromas of caramel, Bing cherries, and toasted spiced nuts give way to a smooth, creamy, and layered mix of dark fruit, currant, and black cherries. While the touch of Merlot assures drinkable tannins, and the Cab Franc enhances each sip, a chocolate finish supported by orange zest screams that this is Cabernet all the way. Will drink best 2014-2020.

Shadow Box Chardonnay Orchard Lane Napa 2010

Price: $45.00   Sale $39.60     Case $459

Only 100 Cases of this beautifully balanced and layered Chardonnay were made by Winemaker Mike Drash. 11 months of aging 50% new and 50% once used French Oak barrels, and 50% malolactic fermentation have given this wine a golden straw color and a fruit-to-dry finish that seemingly lasts forever. Aromas of brioche, grapefruit, and Crenshaw melon abound, with a mid palate of caramel, apples, and a hint of ripe banana. Overall, the wine is bright and round enough to enjoy on its own or to accompany light meats, salads, and fish, while suggesting a period of ageability. Drinking perfectly now.

Shadow Box Syrah Mountain Terraces Napa 2009

Price: $56.25   Sale $49.50     Case $574

This is an excellent stylistic example of one of our favorite varietals. Only 47 cases of the 47 cases of 2009 shadowbox Syrah from Mountain Terraces Vineyard were produced, and we wish we had more. Winemaker Ames Morison's choice to age the juice in all French Oak, 50% new and 50% once used, gives this wine sought-after backbone. Give it time to open and experience tar and charcoal on the nose, hints of graphite that pop up in various stages, and black plums that seem to frame the tannins. Velvety/rose petal smoothness followed by notes of dark chocolate, cocoa, and purple fruit stay with you to the back palate and through an extended finish. Game or lamb pair magically well, and if you have the time we recommend decanting for an hour before your meal. This is wine that will drink at its best through 2017.

Whitehall Lane Winery & Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve Napa 2009

Price: $78.75

The Reserve Cabernet program was started at Whitehall Lane Winery in 1984. Since that time, fruit primarily from the Rutherford and St. Helena appellations has been ‘Reserve’ designated. The 2009 vintage is primarily a blend of the winery’s Fawn Park Vineyard, Millennium MM Vineyard and Leonardini Vineyard fruit. The small amounts of Malbec and Petite Verdot add color, depth and complexity to this classic offering. The wine was aged in 80% French and 20% American oak barrels for 25 months and was bottled in December 2011.

This deep wine has inviting aromas of berry and toasty oak with flavors of cassis, dark berry and hints of mocha and cedar. Understated toasty oak and supple tannins beautifully frame the gorgeous ripe fruit. Enjoy this wine through 2020.

Cain Vineyards Cain Concept Red Napa 2008

Price $61.00    Sale $53.68     Case $623

The core of our Cain Concept—The Benchland is about Cabernet Sauvignon grown on the alluvial fan benches that form at the foot of the mountains lining the edges of the Napa Valley. We believe that the Cabernet Sauvignon grown on the western and eastern benches of Oakville, Rutherford, and St. Helena have defined the greatness of the Napa Valley for more than 100 years.

2008 was characterized by low yield—especially in the Cabernet Sauvignon, giving us a tight and concentrated core on which we were able to build with the complementary varieties of our blend. Other than low yields, there were no real issues. It was a typically warm and mellow growing season in the Napa Valley—no wonder the wines from this valley are so easy to love!

Mt. Eden Vineyards Domaine Eden Chardonnay Sant aCruz Mountains 2010

CLIMENS.jpg (571×392)

Château Climens

Château Climens Barsac 2010

Price: $225.00 Sale $198        Case $2295

(94-96 Points) Berenice Lurton and her team managed to pick the crop just hours before rains fell on October 23. Tasting through every one of their lots in 2010, there was a theme of tautness, racy acidity and spice. Focusing upon two batches representing about 14% of the harvest, there was patently exquisite balance and a sense of concentrated but efficient power, counterbalanced by immense purity and effervescence. Their problem will be knowing exactly which lots to deselect!  Wine Advocate #194, May 2011

Domaine Villa Ponciago Fleurie ‘la Reserve’ 2009

Price: $21.75   Sale $19.14     Case $22

(90 points) Representing a blend originating in some 35 choice acres from across this estate's large holdings, Villa Ponciago's 2009 Fleurie La Reserve is strikingly scented with lightly-cooked dark cherry and blackberry; toasted nuts; charred, grilled red meat. An invigoratingly tart edge to the concentrated berry fruit offers ideal counterpoint to the vivid sense of roasted meat pan drippings on this cuvee’s dense, finely tannic palate. Here is one of those relatively rare instances where I am willing to concede that the element of wood really does serve to “frame†the fruit. The overall effect if impressive though hardly exuberantly fruity, a wine of serious savor and formidable grip, though thankfully persistent juiciness, too. That said, some alluring peony-like perfume added charm as this opened to the air. I would anticipate this meriting at least 3-4 years of attention, although, of course, no track record exists yet for this or any other Villa Ponciago bottling.  Wine Advocate #196 Aug 2011

A bit about Hall Winery and Kathryn:

The Hall winery in St. Helena has a rich and colorful history in the Napa Valley dating back to the 19th century.  The original property was founded in 1885 and for many years was known as the Napa Valley Co-op.  The original stone winery, which still stands on the property today, was built by New England sea captain William Peterson.  He was the best-known and longest tenured owner which, under the direction of renowned winemaker and Napa Valley pioneer Charles Forni, produced 40 percent of all Napa Valley wines in the late 1930s.

With its acquisition by Kathryn and Craig Hall in 2003, a new chapter began for the storied winery, one that preserves its place in the annals of Napa Valley wine history yet adds a modern-day dimension of excellence in winemaking and an unparalleled visitor experience. Craig Hall, a Texas developer who helped finance both the new Hilton in Napa and the new hotel next to Copia, and Kathryn Hall, his lovely wife, who was ambassador to Austria under Bill Clinton have been making superb wines from the 14-acre Sacrashe Vineyard, a 20-year-old mountain vineyard on their incredible 40-acre estate high above Auberge du Soleil in Rutherford.

Today, as Hall, the winery is dedicated to the production of ultra-premium Bordeaux varietal wines from Kathryn and Craig Hall's vineyards in Napa Valley and Alexander Valley. They have remodeled the tasting room, where visitors can try Hall wines, relax in the arbor-covered courtyards and take in the original works of art and sculpture from the Halls' collection. After acquiring the estate in 2003, the Halls began work on designs to replace the existing winery with a modern winemaking facility, while at the same time restoring the 1885 stone winery on the site to its original glory for future generations to appreciate. To this end, the Halls have engaged renowned architect Frank Gehry and his firm, along with local architect Jon Lail, to design a new Hall St. Helena winery.

They bought the vineyard property in 1995, a 250-acre Napa River Ranch on the Silverado Trail plus 405 acres with 54 acres of grapes in Alexander Valley and began making small lots of wine the next year. Unfortunately, however, the stock of their 1996 and 1997 vintages was destroyed in a warehouse fire in June 2000.  After the fire, they rededicated themselves to producing world-class wine from the site, which certainly has that potential.

Though relatively new to Napa, Kathryn Hall has long been involved in the wine business.  For more than 30 years, as her family has long grown grapes in Mendocino County. The Walt family owns 63 acres of Gamay, Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc in the Redwood Valley and has sold their grapes to wineries such as Fetzer, Parducci and Beringer.

An attorney by training and practice, Kathryn Hall is a successful business executive, community activist and mother who served as U.S. Ambassador to Austria from 1997 to 2001. She is active in managing the winery, working closely with the winemaker to determine the wine style and overseeing sales and marketing.  She managed the vineyard from 1982 to 1992, also producing a limited quantity of Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc under the label of Walt Vineyards.

Hall wines are crafted to capture the absolute essence of the appellation, varietal and vineyard. Through meticulous cultivation in the field and intense harvesting practices at the winery, including delicate hand-sorting of grapes at harvest allow the winemaking team the ability to utilize the finest grapes available to them, often at the expense of quantity. The focus of the winemaking team is to craft and extract exuberant wines that clearly reflect both their place of origin and true varietal character.

(93 Points) Tasted single blind against its peers. This has a very well -defined nose of dried pineapple, quince and vanilla pod that unfolds seductively in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with a mellifluous texture, although there remains some oak that needs to be subsumed into the wine. It displays fine definition towards the finish with impressive length. Always a little curmudgeonly in its youth, this Climens deserves a decade in bottle. Tasted January 2012.  Wine Advocate #199, Feb 2012

(96 Points) Bold, rich and complex, yet delicate and graceful, showing finely detailed currant, dark berry and licorice notes, with jazzy spice and mocha-scented oak and a long, firming finish that gains depth and dimension. (3) - 3 liters of Château Climens Barsac 2009

Retail Value $1500

(97 Points) The samples tasted in Southwold were not correct and therefore I requested a bottle to be included in this report that was tasted one week later. Suffice to say, it was completely different and much more representative. Here the 2009 displays a wonderful bouquet of honeysuckle, almond and a hint of creme caramel that is beautifully defined. The palate has a creamy entry with patently a good deal of oak that needs to be subsumed. The balance is just exquisite, the line of acidity perfectly pitched and moreover, there is that paradoxical mixture of weight and levity that makes Climens what it is. The finish blossoms with quince, almond and honey and lingers long in the mouth. This is surely destined to be a top tier Climens that will last the usual decades. Drink 2014-2050. eRobertParker.com #205, Feb 2013

Big bottles of Chateau Climens and older vintages are available in the store!

Chateau Climens is truly incomparable, ironically for some, Climens means 'unfertile of poor land' in Celtic.

Fortunately for those in the know, the prodigious vine is capable of transforming apparently undesirable soils into the most outstanding wine terroirs!

Situated on the highest point of the Barsac appellation, the vines stretch over 30 hectares around the chateau, in one continuous vineyard.  The red soil, dotted with pebbles is made up of a thin layer of clay, ferruginous sand on a substratum of fissured starfish limestone.  The combination of these soils and the slope provided excellent drainage.

Aided by the micro-climate of Sauternes this exceptional terroir allows for early development of noble rot, or Botrytis Cinerea on the grapes.  Encouraged by the alternate morning mists and daytime sunshine, this microscopic fungus develops on the ripe grapes, causing them to become more concentrated and modifying their composition essential for the genesis of the greatest noble late harvest wines.

Planted only with Semillon, Chateau Climens is one of the rare single varietal wines of the region.

The perfect symbiosis between this demanding grape varietal and the unique terroir enables the Semillon here to develop truly exceptional balance and aromatic expression.

Freshness and minerality transcend the richness, lifting this powerful wine to enduring heights in the mouth.  As for the complex and delicate flavors found on the palate, they seem to be infinite.

In their youth the wines liberate perfumes of white flowers, of fresh fruit, citrus and even mint or eucalyptus, exotic spices and jammy fruit flavors over time a lovely honeyed character.
