Jack: If they want to drink Merlot, we're drinking Merlot.

Miles Raymond: No, if anyone orders Merlot, I'm leaving. I am NOT drinking any fu*&^% Merlot!

Merlot is the second most planted varietal on the planet earth, although its popularity has helped give this outstanding varietal an identity crisis.

The name Merlot is thought to be a diminutive of merle, the French name for the blackbird, probably a reference to the color of the grape. Its softness and "fleshiness", combined with its earlier ripening, makes Merlot a popular grape for blending with the sterner, later-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon, which tends to be higher in tannin.

When done right Merlot is one of the greatest wines on the planet.  When it is done wrong it is one of the least enjoyable of all wines.  After the boom of the late 1990’s which was sparked by the nations’ most popular news programs 60 minutes expose called “the French Paradox” where they discovered that the consumption of wine was linked to superior heath in people from France.  The U.S. started drinking more wine and Merlot was the bell of the ball so wineries planted this finicky varietal all over the state of California and beyond to quench the demand for this healthy elixir.

There is no question among wine lovers that the greatest expression of this varietal is from Bordeaux and Pomerol the small one horse town is above all else when it comes to Merlot. There is no question when it comes to supply and demand that Chateau Petrus is the most sought after of all the wines from Pomerol so when my good friend Dr. Robert Maliner called and asked if I would like to host a tasting featuring this great Chateau and Ornellaia Masseto Italy’s greatest example of this varietal, I immediately put a date on the calendar.

Dr. Maliner is one of South Florida’s biggest wine collectors and he likes to jazz it up a bit and throw in a few other great Merlots to compare so we have the only Merlot to ever garner the #1 spot in the Wine Spectator 2001 Paloma from Napa Valley, Chateau Le Pin from Pomerol, Chateau Trotanoy from Pomerol and the Tua Rita Redigaffi from Tuscanyalso on the table tonight.

The fee for this tasting which includes dinner is $1975 + tax, which is less than the price of a single bottle of any of the Chateau Petrus we are serving this evening as you can see we have most of them for sale on this offering.  I have also included all the wines from Tenuta Ornellaia here for sale as well.  Don’t wait too long to call on this one we only have 12 spaces available for this “Once in a Lifetime” Merlot tasting.

A bit about Chateau Petrus:

It is without question the most recherché claret on the face of the Earth.  Most wine aficionados have never even tried this ultra-exclusive wine.  Many say that it is overpriced, but those in the know realize that price is only relative.  Is Petrus a truly great wine or is it a greatly over-priced wine.  The production is so limited (less than 4,000 cases) that allocations are usually taken without even a mention of the asking price.

Things were not always so good for this tiny property.  The Petrus phenomenon is fairly recent.  A little over sixty years ago hardly anyone had even heard of Petrus, and fewer were interested in buying the wine.  Pomerol itself had not really caught the eye of the Bordeaux drinkers, it was not until 1900 that the Syndicate of Pomerol was founded; the commune was considered to be a lesser appellation of Saint Emilion.  Saint Emilion itself, until the latter portion of the nineteenth century was regarded as greatly inferior to wines coming from the Medoc and Graves.  This is the reason, not because of some self-imposed restriction, that the 1855 Classification consists (with the exception of Chateau Haut Brion) only wines coming from the Medoc.  Unlike the other areas in Bordeaux, Pomerol has never had a classification of its own.

In the first mention of Petrus in the notebooks of the Bordeaux firm Tastet and Lawton it was owned by the Arnaud family.  This was in the 1830’s and at that time the only grand vins of Pomerol were, Vieux Certan, Petite Village and Trotanoy.  Petrus was added to this list a few short years later.  It remained in the Arnaud family until after the First World War and by this time they had firmly established Petrus as one of the top houses in Pomerol, in a good year it would fetch prices on par with a second growth Medoc wine.  Now a limited company, it was gradually acquired from 1925 onwards by Mme Edmond Loubat who became sole owner by about 1945.

It was the Loubat family that brought Petrus to top-growth status; Mme Loubat was a woman of great personality, who never made the mistake of compromising the integrity of her product.  She took every opportunity to show the rest of the Bordeaux that her wines were as good as anything-made in Pomerol, Saint Emilion, and the rest of the Medoc.

When the time came to pass the torch on at Petrus Mme Loubat was left in somewhat of a predicament.  She had no children and only two heirs, the only children of each of her two sisters.  These two were not tight, so Mme Loubat decided to give one share of Pertus to Jean Pierre Moueix which would enable him to have a say in the management of the property and to make an exact division of the remainder between the heirs.  Her confident and ally Jean-Pierre Moueix began as simply the proprietor of Chateau Fonroque in Saint Emilion but finding no negociant interested in his wine during the depression of the 1930’s, he set up a negociant business.  The Moueix family owed, farmed for absentee landlords or had the marketing rights, in part or exclusively, for the majority of the top properties in the area, including:  Lafleur-Petrus, Trotanoy, Lagrange and La Grave in Pomerol as well as Magdelaine in Saint Emilion.  In addition, Moueix sells a third of Cheval-Blanc, half of Ausone, and has been the sole agent for Petrus since 1947.  Moueix brought Lignac’s shares in 1964 and his son Christian is the sole proprietor and responsible for managing the chateau today.

The secret of Petrus begins with the soil.  The soil here is clay with a curious blue tinge to it.  Underneath this clay is an impermeable layer of hard iron soil known as crasse de fer, or machefer.  The vineyard is planted almost exclusively to Merlot with about 5% Cabernet Franc, however this is not always used in the grand vin blend, for it is only in exceptional years that the Cabernet Franc gets really ripe.  Therefore, Petrus is usually 100% Merlot.

The vines are very old, an average of 40-45 years, some as much as 80 if not more.  Christian Moueix is a perfectionist and when a single vine gives up it is not immediately replaced.  This way he can maintain the venerability of not only individual vines but of sections of this vineyard and can thus tell you as well from which part of Chateau Petrus each vat of new wine comes and almost how old each constituent drop of the final blend is.  Perfectionism can often times be confused with eccentricity and Christian has been accused of being both.  In years when there has been rain at the time of harvest, he has employed helicopters to generate a downwind to dry out the grapes.  In 1992 the ground was lined with plastic sheets so that no moisture should penetrate the earth.  All of the grapes that go into Petrus are harvested on the same day; they even go to the extent of waiting until after lunch to begin the picking.  By the afternoon the dew has evaporated, and the berries are dry and warm potentially about a half degree of alcohol riper than in the morning.

(100 Points) When I asked winemaker Olivier Berrouet about his greatest challenges in 2015, he replied, "Our biggest challenge is to avoid all the temptations you can have in the vineyard and in the cellar. You can go too far. With our job, if you go too far, you can't go back. Little steps are best." His comments eloquently explain the immense pressure of handling a seemingly pressure-less vintage like 2015 in Pomerol. But, with the devil in all the many details that are involved in the pursuit of wine perfection, if anyone has that devil by the horns, it is this incredibly talented young winemaker. - Wine Advocate

2014 Chateau Petrus Pomerol
Price: $3500.00    Your Price: $2750.00      Quantity in Stock: 18

(95 Points) This has lush, fleshy layers of blackberry, fig and black currant confiture rumbling through, pushed by notes of charcoal and warm tobacco leaf. Ganache hints fill in on the finish. Bass-driven, with a serious knot of tannins that have yet to stretch out, but the core of fruit is way too serious to doubt. Best from 2020 through 2035.  Wine Spectator

2012 Chateau Petrus Pomerol
Price: $4250.00    Your Price: $3500.00      Quantity in Stock: 6

(96 Points) Tasted blind at the Southwold 2012 tasting, the 2012 Petrus demonstrated a forward, fruit-driven, ripe raspberry and wild strawberry bouquet underneath which lies graphite and forest floor aromas. It seems refined, understated, nonchalant even. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly savory opening, as if there was a tiny drop of Cabernet Franc. The tannins are fine but firm, the red fruit infused with cooked meat, black pepper and sage notes, although I was anticipating a finish armed with more body. That may well develop in time, yet it remains a regal Pomerol that will probably merit a higher score with bottle age, hence the plus-sign against the score. Tasted January 2016.  Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

2011 Chateau Petrus Pomerol
Price: $4250.00    Your Price: $3500.00      Quantity in Stock: 6

(93 Points) A dense ruby/purple-tinged color and restrained but intriguing aromas of kirsch, raspberry jam, wood spice, and mulberries are found in this full-bodied Petrus. An undeniable success in 2011, it is rich, layered and pure with light to moderate tannin, but seems slightly less muscular and tannic compared to its stablemate, Trotanoy. Forget it for a few years and drink it over the following 25 years. Made from 100% Merlot, it tips the scales at 13.5% alcohol. In short, it is typically open-knit and already showing very well. This is quite opulent.  Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

2010 Chateau Petrus Pomerol
Price: $5500.00    Your Price: $4500.00      Quantity in Stock: 3

(100 Points) Deep garnet colored, the 2010 Petrus opens a little broody, with gentle crushed rocks, cast iron pan and fragrant earth notions giving way to a core plum preserves, baked blueberries, licorice and Black Forest cake plus wafts of pencil shavings, garrigue and violets. Full-bodied, the palate is beautifully poised with a firm line of exquisitely ripe, fine-grained tannins and fantastic freshness bolstering the generous fruit, finishing very long and very, very classy. Collectors fortunate enough to have a few bottles of this vintage are advised to be patient and allow it a further 7-10 years to loosen-up and emerge gloriously from this rock-solid structure.  Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

2009 Chateau Petrus Pomerol
Price: $4500.00    Your Price: $3800.00      Quantity in Stock: 6

(100 Points) An opulent Petrus very much in the stylistic family of the 1990, this 100% Merlot has a dense plum/purple color and a sweet nose of mulberries, black cherries, some subtle toast and licorice as well as a floral element. A wine of great intensity, a multidimensional mouthfeel and full-bodied, stunning concentration, the 2009 Petrus 2009 is everything one would expect of it. Given the sweetness of its tannin, much like the 1990, I suspect this wine will always be œopen for business, appealing even in its youth. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2050+. This is one of the larger productions of Petrus over recent years, with nearly 3,000 cases of this vintage turned out by proprietor Jean Moueix. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

2005 Chateau Petrus Pomerol
Price: $6500.00    Your Price: $5500.00      Quantity in Stock: 12

(100 points) Outer quote mark A sleeping giant. Dark ruby in color, showing aromas of blackberry, cèpe and green olive, with a hint of mineral. Full-bodied, with ultrafine tannins and a supercaressing mouthfeel. Turns to coffee, dark chocolate and berry. Chewy yet balanced. Very, very long in the mouth. The finish is absolutely breathtaking. (JS) Inner quote mark (3/2008)  Wine Spectator

2002 Chateau Petrus Pomerol
Price: $3500.00    Your Price: $2850.00      Quantity in Stock: 3

(93 points) Outer quote mark Gorgeous subtle aromas of crushed raspberries and light vanilla, with hints of spices. Medium- to full-bodied, with wonderfully seductive, silky tannins. Beautiful slinky finish. Pétrus is very fine indeed in this vintage. Not overdone, all in the right place Inner quote mark (3/2005)  Wine Spectator

2001 Chateau Petrus Pomerol
Price: $3900.00    Your Price: $3200.00      Quantity in Stock: 6

(95 points) Outer quote mark The 2001 Petrus (2,160 cases produced) exhibits more depth and richness than any other Pomerol I tasted. Its deep saturated ruby/plum/purple color is accompanied by a tight but promising bouquet of vanilla, cherry liqueur, melted licorice, black currants, and notions of truffles and earth. Rich, full-bodied, and surprisingly thick as well as intense, there is plenty of structure underlying the wealth of fruit and extract. Give it 3-6 years of cellaring, and drink it over the following two decades as it promises to be one of the longest-lived wines of the vintage, not to mention one of the most concentrated. I told Christian Moueix (although I’m not sure he agreed with me) that his best wines of 2001 reminded me of the 1971s in style, but with slightly less tannin and more fat. Inner quote mark (6/2004) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

2000 Chateau Petrus Pomerol
Price: $6500.00    Your Price: $5500.00      Quantity in Stock: 2

(100 Points) A prodigious Petrus, this wine has that extra level of intensity and complexity that is monumental. The magic is clearly Petrus, and the 2000 will always be an interesting vintage to compare to another legend in the making, the 1998, or more recently, of course, the 2005, 2008, and 2009. Extremely full-bodied, with great fruit purity, an unmistakable note of underbrush, black truffle, intense black cherries, licorice, and mulberry, the wine seems to show no evidence of oak whatsoever. It has a sumptuous, unctuous texture, plenty of tannin, but also vibrancy and brightness. This is a remarkable wine that seems slightly more structured and massive than the 1998, which comes across as slightly more seamless, as if it were haute couture. This wine needs at least another 5-10 years of cellaring and should age for 50+ years. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

1997 Chateau Petrus Pomerol
Price: $2750.00  Sale Price: $2000.00         Quantity in Stock: 1

(91 Points) "The backward 1997 (2,300 cases produced) needs 3-4 years of cellaring. The dense plum/ruby/purple color is accompanied by a closed bouquet of mocha, dried tomato skin, and black fruits. In the mouth, it is one of the most muscular 1997s, exhibiting outstanding concentration, length, intensity, and depth, copious tannin, and a fine mouth-feel. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2025. (RP)" (04/2000) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

1990 Chateau Petrus Pomerol
Price: $5999.00    Sale Price: $5279.00       Quantity in Stock: 1

(100 Points) The 1990 Petrus remains incredibly young, one of the least evolved wines of the vintage (along with Montrose and Beausejour-Duffau). This dense ruby/purple-colored effort is beginning to hint at the massive richness and full-bodied intensity lurking beneath its wall of tannin. The vintage's sweetness, low acidity, and velvety tannins are present in abundance, and the wine is massive in the mouth as well as incredibly pure and well-delineated. I thought it would be drinkable by now, but it appears another 5-10 years will pass before it begins to reach its plateau of maturity. This wine is capable of lasting at least four more decades. An incredible achievement!  The Wine Advocate

1989 Chateau Petrus Pomerol
Price: $5999.00  Your Price: $5279.12        Quantity in Stock: 1

(100 Points) This wine is more tightly knit, more tannic, but every bit the blockbuster concentrated effort that its younger sibling, the 1990, is. It seems to need more coaxing from the glass, but the color is virtually identical, a dense ruby/purple with no lightening at the edge. In the mouth the wine cuts a broad swath, with spectacular intensity, richness, massive concentration, and high levels of tannin, yet the wine is fabulously well-delineated and like its sibling, the 1990, has a finish that goes on for nearly a minute. It does not seem to be quite as evolved as the 1990, and my instincts suggest there is a bit more tannin, but both are as prodigious as Petrus can be.  Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

(100 points) Outer quote mark Masseto has pulled off back-to-back home runs. This is the first time that an Italian wine has earned 100 points in successive vintages. The 2016 Masseto is a thunderstorm of emotions, but it manages to keep them under perfect control. Like the 2015 Masseto before it, this vintage is a seamless wine of the highest pedigree. It represents an encore performance, continuing the string of successes that is bringing Italy to the forefront of the wine world. The first thing you'll notice is the thickness and concentration of the fruit that makes an immediate impact on all the senses, in terms of appearance, aroma and mouthfeel. There is no overstating the sheer power and richness of this iconic vintage of Italy's groundbreaking Merlot. Despite that considerable mass, this Masseto remains delicate and graceful. You gain better perspective as the wine opens in the glass and reveals deeper layers that were not immediately apparent on first nose: dark fruit, spice, sweet tobacco and black cherry. There is great tightness and laser focus to the fruit. I tasted the 2016 and 2015 vintages together for comparison when I scored this wine, and then I tasted this 2016 edition alone about a month later to confirm my impressions. These vintages are identical twins, two perfect wines. (ML) Inner quote mark (4/2019)  Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

2013 Tenuta Dell Ornellaia Masseto Tuscany
Price: $1100.00  Sale Price: $825.00          Quantity in Stock: 6

(97 points) Outer quote mark The 2013 Masseto paints a glorious picture of Tuscany. It captures an inspired moment in time and walks an impressive tightrope between power and elegance. In my preview tasting last year, I noticed the firm textural richness of the 2013 vintage and the crystalline sharpness of its aromas. Thanks to 12 additional months of bottle aging, that impression is evermore constant and concrete. The focus is there, yet the wine has also fleshed out and put on more velvety definition especially in terms of mouthfeel. It wears its pedigree with pride, but most importantly it offers the balance and integration to promise a long and healthy aging future. The 2013 vintage follows closely on the heels of the impeccable 2006 and 2010 vintages in terms of cellaring potential. This is definitely a bottle that should interest collectors. 2006 Tenuta Dell Ornellaia Masseto Tuscany
Price: $1150.00  Your Price: $1012.00       Quantity in Stock: 3

(99 Points) I can still remember nearly falling out of my chair the first time I tasted the 2006 Masseto (100% Merlot) from barrel. The wine is now in bottle, and it is every bit as monumental as I had hoped. The wine possesses staggering richness in a style that perfectly captures the essence of this great Tuscan vintage. Black cherries, flowers, licorice and sweet toasted oak are just some of the nuances that emerge from the 2006 Masseto. A wine of breathtaking depth, it also reveals superb clarity, freshness and vibrancy in a sumptuous, beautifully-balanced style. Simply put, the 2006 Masseto is a masterpiece from Tenuta dell’ Ornellaia. According to Agronomist/General Manager Leonardo Raspini the dryness of the vintage slowed down the maturation of the sugars, leaving the wine with an unusually high level of acidity, and therefore freshness, considering its overall ripeness. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2031. Wine Advocate # 184, Aug 2009

(100 Points) Wonderful aromas of blackberries, raspberries and fresh tobacco, with a hint of exotic fruit. Full-bodied, with loads of velvety tannins and a long, long finish. Very silky indeed. A gorgeous, seductive, classy red. A monument to Tuscany. Layers and layers of fruit and tannins. Perhaps the greatest Tuscan red ever. Best after 2012. 2,670 cases made. –JS  Wine Spectator  Top 100: 2004, Rank: 6, Designation: Collectibles
